Marie Osmond's son: suicide because he was gay?

:offtopic:Why is it every picture of her son is when is was so small, is there not any pictures of him recently? I have yet to see one where he is over the age of 10.

I agree. I do think it is a little insensitive for her to make a statement like that, I do think her heart is in the right place though. I have many many many gay friends ( I do theatre:banana:) and if he was gay and was getting pressure from the church then I can see where the depression and drugs came into play which could have gone hand in hand with the suicide.

Thats impossible because she obviously doesn't have one.

Although it's very insensitive of Roseanne to make a public statement like this, she does seem genuinely angry and saddened. I do know that there are many gay people who become depressed because of acceptance issues, especially when surrounded by strongly religious organization and people.
I agree. There HAVE to be more tactful and effective ways to share this message, but since she grew up among Mormons, it wouldn't surprise me at all to know the message and the intent are right, just the delivery could have used a hall of a lot of work!

the sad part is its probably true. it must be hard being told the very person you are is evil and told you are going to hell for loving someone of the same gender. Everyday knowing that you will never make your parents proud, you will never be accepted by the church. Its not the first time, and sadly it wont be the last. I think Roseanne was spot on with this article. It might be a little soon, but it doesnt make it any less true. and These rumors have been going around for quite a while about him being gay, what she said was not a surprise.

Roseanne is sick and a b****. I am Mormon. I support equal rights for all people, including homosexuals. To group our entire church into one hatemongering lump shows that woman's ignorance. :sad2:

And anyone else who shares a bigoted view of my church similar to that vile woman's, read this first-

I'm not LDS, but I'm member of an LDS forum and most of the posters who are LDS strongly state that they show love and compassion to homosexuals but they believe that living a gay lifestyle is outside the doctrine of the faith, is not holy, and that's part of the teaching that they give their children.

I think he had a girlfriend, That he had called right before he jumped. A blonde girl I have seen her interview a couple of times

And your point?

I don't find homosexuality to be right. I see it as outside of the doctrines I've been taught. However, that does not mean that gays and lesbians don't deserve their rights, and I support giving them those well-deserved rights as human beings, regardless of my religious convictions. They're people too, and I want my rights as a heterosexual as much as they want theirs as homosexuals.

People like a poster I saw here who claims our church teaches that you are "evil" if you are gay need to go research the LDS church before they make such inaccurate, borderline ignorant statements as well. Because that most certainly is not the case. That's why I included a link in my post to that article.

Nevertheless, if Marie's son did kill himself over such an issue, it is truly sad for the Osmond family. I don't think it's fair to place the blame on the church though. A person consciously decides to kill themselves of their own free will.

My best friend is Mormon and I have nothing against Mormons. However, the Mormon church provided most of the funding for Prop 8 in California which made it against the law for homosexuals to get married.

I don't find it accurate to say the LDS church provided "most" of it. There are voters out there who thought for themselves and voted against it. Everyone seems to prefer to blame the church though.

That's the girl in the pic I posted. She is his best friend, not his girlfriend. They met studying theater a few years ago. She lived in the same apartment building.

My point is that LDS, like many other religions, believe in tolerance, compassion and rights, but not the right to be a practicing homosexual if they want to remain LDS. That must be very very difficult for young people coming to terms with who they are, especially if they believe their religion/bible to be true. No offense was intended. I'm Catholic and my Church teaches the same thing.

I made a typo... I meant most of the funding :thumbsup2

Oh, none taken, I was just wondering! :goodvibes The way I see it, God loves us no matter what, and in the end, He determines our eternal fate, so why should man constantly be shoving right/wrong in our faces and saying "You'll pay for this someday!"? We're not God, how should we know what's truly acceptable?:confused3

I was gonna say... they might've funded it, but I doubt many of the church leaders actually got out there and voted!:rotfl2: Seems they never do! They gave money but I bet that was where it stopped.

Now as far as churches go... you want to see some real hatemongering bigots, come to my hometown and I'll take you to the local Southern Baptist church. :scared1: Yikes!!! No one would ever criticize the LDS church again after spending five minutes with the brand of Baptists in my area.

But, as in all religions, not everyone is so tolerant. He may have actually been gay and not been able to come to terms with it, due to his OWN beliefs.

Things like this are so hard to make judgment calls on, in the end no one will ever know what the poor man was thinking when he killed himself. Its a sad, sad situation, and while speculation is impossible to avoid, people with public influence should not be making statements without any just grounds like that blog post.

I don't think any of them COULD have voted because it was mostly funded by the church in Utah :P

There are Mormon church leaders in CA too. They have the 2nd highest LDS population in the nation behind Utah.:confused3

I know (there are about 3 of them in my town), but it was mostly funded by the Mormon church of Utah.
