Marathon Weekend 2025

While I understand that waiting in the cold is miserable (2021 W&D 10k with wind, rain, and cold is up there for most miserable experience), once you get going I’ve found overdressing can be a big problem as well. I’ve bundled up for runs in the teens, only to find myself overheating half way through. I think of all the NCAA XC runners I see during winter in 2” shorts, a singlet, and gloves—and they’re pouring sweat. I love the contrast of clothing in the pic below. :P

Have to agree with this. At 35 I’m in shorts and a tank if I’m racing hard, though I’ll add sleeves and GLOVES. I spent 30+ years working outside in NE with my hands and can’t stand cold fingers, which I get very easily. The 5 and 10 and half I can run slow in a long sleeve and thermals if it was really cold, I’m mostly worried about having enough in the coral for the full to stay warm without getting too sweaty before the start.
No matter what, it’s going to be fun.

It's not unusual for me to come home from a run in the 30s or even low 40s wearing full length tights, thermal shirt, gloves and fleece headband with a full-blown cold rash covering my torso. Cold and I don't get along.

At least I'm not as bad as my daughter, who has been diagnosed as allergic to the cold. She will literally break out in hives if she gets too cold.
Ohh I break out in hives when I sweat! Hence why I hate heart.

Yep, this happens to me, too. Growing up in WNY was pure misery: hives every day of winter. I totally feel for your daughter! Thank all that is good in the world for Zyrtec, which I take daily and mostly keeps the hives under control.
What are the weather conditions that could get the races changed/cancelled?
I had assumed that only storms/lightning and hotter temps. Is it accurate?
Thanks!
Lightning, dangerous winds/tornadoes, heat. It’d been as low as the high 20s with wind chill in the teens and sleet and races went on, so I don’t think there is a low too low (that can actually happen in Orlando) for a race to be canceled due to cold.

I only did the half during marathon weekend 2023. I started the race at 49° and finished at 48°. Disney CM's were handing out branded Mylar sheets before and after the race. I'm pretty sure I still have mine; free souvenir! Disney has an interest in keeping you comfortable.

I'm in Texas, and my rule is long sleeves in the 50°s, long pants in the 40°s, and a hoodie with gloves in the 30°s. I ran that race in shorts and a t-shirt and set my PR. Colder is faster.

I had no recollection of the 2023 half being cold - in my mind it had been a warm weekend. I just went back and looked at pictures and I was wearing running pants and a second layer under my rDisney long sleeve shirt. I think I only used a mylar blanket int he corrals. I'd be happy with similar temps this year.

Hit up Costco for more layers today. Decent selection of mens long-sleeve tops that feel similar to UA coldgear in a 2-for-$12 pack. Grabbed another pack of undershirts that I like for layering under costumes. I will also probably bring a couple of fleece blankets with me that I got from Menards on black Friday (similar to the ones already linked from walmart.) I picked up some gloves (to wear and keep, not throw away) and a cheap fleece headband as well. "Winter" coats were also marked down quite a bit; several were down to $15/ea and while that's a good price, it's too much for me for something to only wear for a couple of hours. Still crossing things for those temps to drift up about 10 degrees.....40s are reasonable. 30s are gross.

Me either, but I also went back and looked at photos. I had leggings and compression calf sleeves under my skirt and a long sleeve lightweight thermal top under my costume tee. I kept all the layers on the whole race, as there's a character pic and finish line pic with all of it on. I don't know why I totally forgot this!

I remember the 2023 half being very cold because I was an idiot and tossed my hand warmers before MK, and then it got COLDER! The ponds were steaming, and I was running with my hands in my armpits and was in shorts and a t shirt. I accidentally paused my Garmin with said hands in armpits. I remember googling if you could get hypothermia at 40F and my hands could hardly type. I've since learned to keep the hand warmers in my pocket, just in case

I went and picked up a bunch of throwaway clothes from Plato's Closet, they had 50% off clearance (missed the 80% off yesterday, darn) and found 6 pairs of sweatpants and 2 more sweatshirts (already have a big stash) for $37. Also grabbed a few throwaway gloves at the dollar store for the corrals, I don't have enough nice pairs if I need them for every race. I've got loads of mylar and plenty of hot hands. Also grabbed some snacks to pack, including hot cocoa and apple cider packets :rotfl:

So funny- I looked back at my photos and I'm in short sleeves and a skirt with shorts under. I see I did have a hoodie on in the corral, but it's so weird how people feel the temps differently.

On another note, I'm starting to get concerned about the possibility of snow messing up my flight out. I'm leaving from NY on Jan 9 (hopefully). Anyone else hearing rumblings about a storm?

Yep, the S word has entered the conversation among my local (100 miles west of WDW) meteorologists, too.

For those who don’t know, it DID snow at MW in 2010. I wasn’t running, but I was there to witness it! It was very confusing… walking out to my car the morning of the half and it was drizzling, but the drizzle was… a solid??? Literally sat there watching the sleet hit my windshield for a few minutes, unable to process what was happening. Got to the TTC and boarded a monorail, on which a bunch of half finishers were shivering hard under their Mylar, looking shell shocked.

The marathon the next day was snow- and sleet-free, but the temp dropped below freezing and water on the ground at hydration stops was freezing. People I know who ran it said it was pretty slippery.
My favorite part of the full in 2010 was watching the volunteers at the aid stations get creative to solve the freezing water and slippery issue. Many of them sprinkled the Powerade powder on the newly formed ice, and it surprisingly worked very well. :)

Ran 12k this morning where it was 80 and 88% humidity. Bring on the cold weather, please!

I would guess that ice would also cause problems--they don't want to deal with literal pile-ups of runners falling all over the place
I mentioned it up thread. But idk if they’ll put the entire field but wheels are definitely at high risk if we get ice for being told to DNS. I don’t know if that would result in a dns of everyone though. But I kinda suspect last years shortening has some correlation to not being able to safely evacuate wheels in thunderstorms combined with several hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment. So they could pull everyone arguably.

(No joke there were 60 odd wheels at the half. And even if everyone had the cheapest racing chair. That’s still near a quarter of a million in equipment. And trust me not everyone has the cheapest.)

On the bright side right now the fulls temp is high enough currently that even if we get snow it’s way too warm for it stick and make ice.

Oh hey didn’t realize you were in my neck of the woods now. I’m over in Katy.

Also looks like I might actually be around DATW this year. (Though it would be eating more for me.)

Yeah heat sensitivity for me means extra staring at the weather chart. I’m used more to this being an issue when the weather is on the opposite side of the spectrum.
I am over in The Woodlands. Not too far away.

Here is a screenshot for my area Monday night. I’m in the Hampton Roads area. Thought I would share since some may be traveling. I’m sure it will change.

If this holds up, then my kids will get a snow day since we are in a rural area. And I can leave when I wanted. Woohoo!🙌🏻

I’ll be driving 95. Anyone south of VA, what is your snow chances looking like? That will make the drive even longer since people don’t know how to drive down here in wintry precipitation.

Just sharing a little example of how not great temperature forecasting has been lately…

My forecast high yesterday was 72º. Actual high? 82º.

QUESTION: anyone have experience using a poncho or disposable raincoat as a top layer to trap heat/shield form wind? I remembered that I have a couple disposable raincoats (think thickness like the ponchos Disney sells in parks) and am thinking that might be easier to manage than wrangling Mylar into a cape and sarong.
