Marathon Weekend 2025

Once again, I have to wonder what Jack’s “normal” paces and/or PRs are. 🤣
Going by the fact it looks like all his races are done in that costume regardless of whether it’s runDisney. So I suspect that his normal pace/PRs are all set in that outfit.
SAFD: Being 100% honest, wearing costumes was a giant part of what made me want to try runDisney in the first place! So yes, I will always take the opportunity to dress up.

The longer the race, the more strict I am about tech materials and being close to running clothes. But for a 5K or even a 10K, I'll go full out with a costume, including wigs, props, etc. I also lean toward things that look good in the dark or that I can light up, since those are mostly run in the dark.

I've moved away from super elaborate themes as I find most people just don't get it, and then I'm disappointed. My last Dopey, I did a series of Inside Out characters mashed up with the race theme character (ie Anger/Donald for the Half) and I even switched costumes mid-marathon (Disgust to Joy). It was really fun to plan and do, but even with my custom shirts that explained it, I'm not sure most people got it.

For this Dopey I'm going much simpler. Not sure yet what the 5K will be, but I'll reuse something I've run in before. I'll join in the group costumes for the 10K (CM Flag shirt) and Half (working on the rainforest floral-spotted panther, with simple color-blocked running skirt and tshirt).

I know I JUST said simpler, but my marathon costume requires a bit of context. I was born in KC and am a HUGE Chiefs fan, so we're usually in the playoffs during MW. I've always wanted to do a Chiefs costume, so I'm finally doing one, but as a nod to the haters I'm mashing up a Patrick Mahomes tech material lightweight jersey with a Kermit green running skirt. I'll add a Kermit green visor with some patches representing Muppets and Chiefs, and add some felt Kermit eyeballs. (Mahomes sounds a lot like Kermit, and rival teams like to poke fun, but he takes it in stride.) So while this may still be a bit of an inside joke, at the very least I can rep my team.

I second all advice to TEST RUN everything! I have most of my costume pieces but am still waiting for a few to arrive. I tend to order from the same stores or Etsy shops so I know what to expect with materials. I tend to assume/buy for hot weather, and I have lots of generic leggings, arm sleeves, gloves and headbands for potential cold weather.

A couple of tips from someone who has run in Tink wings a few times:
1. Be aware the width or depth the wings may add to your body and be VERY aware of people around you. I'm a short, small person and it was tough to keep my wings out of people's way in the corrals.
2. Even if they attach with straps, pin them to your shirt or sports bra. Definitely do a test run with them secured different ways. I found the straps would slide at the adjustment point during my run, making them loose and causing the straps to move and chafe. I pinned them to the back of my shirt but also pinned the straps to themselves so they couldn't slide.
I don’t know why your comment about changing outfits made me think of this. But I just remembered that one girl who had an outfit for every mile one year for the half marathon.

One of the wheels at Halloween had her handcycle fully decked out in a Zero outfit. And still did really well. Which was insane to me.

How's this race (half-marathon) fare for PR potential? For W&D, the half-course is tough to PR because of the Boardwalk > HS log-jam - but I don't see anything similar here in course maps (maybe towards the end at Epcot).

I PR’d at the 2022 Princess Half which is basically the same course. I can’t think of any real bottlenecks, except there might be a one lane area near the beginning, but one lane is wider than the HS-Epcot path. It probably also depends on what corral you are starting in how log jammed that could become.
MW is the last time I can use that PR for POT. I need to find another good half to run for time!
Depending on where you are in the pack cone alley (coming out of MK and heading back to Epcot). Can definitely be a problem. If you are far back it becomes a wall of people essentially. To the point I still remember seeing people jumping in the grass to get around the last time I was that far back.

Also the rolling part into Epcot can definitely be an issue if its own. But the worst is usually cone alley since not only are you jam packed. But no way to spread out safely.

Wow! The logistics of changing once were pretty crazy -- I can't imagine doing it that many times! I'm guessing it was mostly layers, but still.

I PR’d (out of nowhere as far as I’m concerned) at the 2024 Princess half on a similar course. I think if you don’t overspend your energy early, the course has a fairly quick last couple miles if you feel strong.

She actually was carrying it all in a clear backpack if I remember right. Let me see if I can’t find the photo of it I took while we were waiting in the Woody and Bullseye line that year. Thats where I ran into her.

She was in the middle of swapping things around when I ran into her if I remember right. This was during the 2018 Disney World Half.

Yeah... hard no to that!
Yeah I vaguely remember her saying this was going to be the last time she did something like this. Since it had seemed a lot easier in the planning phase than in a practice

And here I am just trying to figure out if I can get my folding cane into my Camelbak. So if I can time it right with Everest I can use it for support to get through the line. Since my handcycle will not make those queue turns.

SAFD:

The costumes are a huge part of why I love RunDisney races so much. Mine are never elaborate, I tend to stick with things I'm comfortable running in and add accessories or details to my shirts. It gives me extra energy when others comment on my costume. I think one of my favorites was last year's Springtime Surprise where I ran as Forky and everyone kept asking me if I was trash.

I am not great at planning ahead, but my marathon weekend costume ideas are coming together:
5k - My son is running with me, I think we might join the Rise and Run group as part of their 101 dalmatians.
10k - CM flags group costume. I'm doing a sparkle skirt, no idea yet what I'll do for a shirt.
half - Small World group costume. Thinking I'll wear the Small World sparkle skirt and a clock face shirt, still wondering if I can make the clock face tick tock back and forth.
full - Probably going to run in the Dopey sparkle skirt. Shirt TBD but I'm wearing a hydration vest so it doesn't really matter that much. Maybe I'll add an interesting visor?

My biggest tip for running in costume is to pack everything you need for each race (except shoes) in a big ziplock bag. That way I know I have everything together and when i'm nervously unpacking on race weekend I don't worry as much. If there's something I'm going to use for multiple races I'll put it in the bag for the first race and then put a note in the subsequent bags to remind me.

Well I got a nice surprise. Disney called and gave us a free upgrade from Pop to Port Orleans. Never stayed there but have walked through the grounds. The hot tub will be worth the switch. I saw on FB someone else staying at Pop got an upgrade. Anybody know what's going on?

Sounds like they're trying to move up the scheduled refurb.

We just got upgraded, too!!

I got the call....but haven't accepted. I really like having the Skyliner to get to HS and E. I asked about CBR or PO-FQ, but they weren't on offer (never hurts to ask). Took down the phone number and may call back (with the usual caveat that the offer may be gone). I don't know.....

I got the call today too! I really struggled with this because I love the Skyliner. But I'll probably never get the chance again to stay mod at "value" prices, so I went for it. I went for the Royal Room because I'll be without my boys who would rather poke their eyes out than stay in a princess room :-) Fingers crossed the weather will be nice enough to enjoy the nicer pools/hot tub! Glad so many other runners will be there too.

We were supposed to stay in a royal room when DH and I went on our "anniversary trip" (which was a trip that had already been postponed due to covid closures, and I'm still a little sad we didn't get to stay there because that headboard looks magical) and then they didn't re-open PO when we were there and we eventually got upgraded to a 2br at OWK. I will say, we got a couple of calls about them trying to move us, and DH wasn't able to respond to me when I was on the phone with a CM the first time they called, and the offers definitely changed based on what they had available when we called back.

I am sitting on a room at Pop but have the Dolphin booked also and that is really where we are going to stay most likely. I just got the call to switch to POR. I asked if they will have food available at 3am before the race as Pop has had sometimes in the past. She checked and said No, so we are sticking with Pop for now (which we will most likely cancel soon anyway).
