Marathon Weekend 2025

Hope that everyone who lives in Florida is safely out of Hurricane Milton’s path. Also hoping that, perhaps against all odds, the storm will weaken before it hits land and the catastrophic effects and damage being predicted will be minimized.
Thank you. My family and I are safe in South Florida, but I fear for @PrincessV who I believe is on the west coast. It's currently predicted to make landfall as a Cat 4.

Yes, Florida DISers please check in as you can and let us know you're safe! I have four different family members along Florida's west coast -- from Port Richey down to Belleair -- who have all refused to evacuate :sigh: and I've got TV, computer and phone on every source I know of to keep an eye on every wobble and shift this storm makes today.

SAFD:
Wow, I have been super busy and got behind on the thread. Lots of discussion the past few weeks! I will skip all the SAFD’s I missed and just jump into this weeks (before I miss this one also!)

I am a bus person, I just love the feel of walking out of my room and seeing all the other runners making their way to the bus stop and waiting to board. It really feels like community to me - even when I am being shy and quiet amongst all these strangers who feel familiar.

This will be my 8th in person Dopey, so lots of bus rides! Two of the 28 times I have sat on the bus led to me being later to the corrals than I would have liked. Once lots of traffic and once a bus got lost, good times…. In both cases I was on a later bus than I should have been. When I go early I have never had an issue.

Hope everyone is good and training is going well!

One of the more vivid memories from my very first marathon weekend was leaving the room at 2:30 in the morning, and everyone quietly walking toward the buses with the only sound being the crunching of gravel under foot and the scuffing of shoes on the sidewalk as we all made our way to the bus stop. It was like a scene out of a zombie movie.

And pertinent to absolutely nothing else: what to do with old room keys? I punched a hole in this one and added it to my backpack along with a luggage tag that I have had for several years.

Lol, you know you're an engineer when zip ties are a means of decor and self expression. Right up there with duct tape.😉

(P.S. Really like the idea!)

So, I thought this group might appreciate this.

They had a Walt Disney produced Taschenbuch available in German and English available for the Berlin marathon that is absolutely adorable. It contained comics, tips, general race course milestones, ect. and was 193 pages long.

Really wish they'd make something similar for the WDW Marathon, maybe for their 50th anniversary!

SAFD: I'm team second bus. I try for the first bus, but don't often succeed. I usually stay at the Swan/Dolphin for race weekends so I like to walk back after the race if Epcot is open.

I've never had a bus disaster but have had a few near misses, and I haven't been doing RunDisney races for all that long. One bus couldn't find the pickup spot. Our coordinator had to run out in the street and flag it down. Another went the wrong way and had to turn around. And then there was the time our bus couldn't get out of the parking lot, and the driver kind of froze up and just couldn't figure out what to do. Finally someone on the bus went out and scanned her room key and we were on our way. So being on an early bus gives me a buffer in case there are issues.

OMG was this on drop-off? I was staying at BWV for a race in the last year or two and on the drop-off (I think at Yacht/Beach Club?), this happened as we were trying to exit the parking lot to go to the next stop.

Yep. I guess I was on the first bus that morning and nobody was watching the parking gate yet to let the busses out.

Mine was definitely AFTER the race, after the first stop on the route around the Boardwalk resorts. I was at BWV, so the last stop, and this happened at the first stop. I think the driver went to the valet gate by mistake as the bus ones always open automatically. Someone had to get off the bus, trigger the gate and keep it up for the bus to drive through, then get back on after we passed. It would have been hilarious if we weren't all just tired and ready to get off!

Twice my bus has gotten lost in the Epcot parking lot on the way to the race. I believe they were both Springtime Surprise weekends too. How does a bus get lost at its final destination you ask? They followed the GPS for Epcot and ignored the giant signs that told the buses where to go, and where all the other buses were going.

Despite that, I am Team Bus because I don't want to be bothered with renting a car and driving myself around. But it is a reminder as to why I always try to get the first bus.

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD).

Let's talk about that most essential piece of running gear, the headphones. What are your go to headphones and why do they stand out for you?

SAFD: My go to headphones are unquestionably Shokz. I've had a number of different models over the years and am currently running in OpenRun Pro. The biggest draw for me is their safety benefit, with their form factor being a close second. I don't like inserting buds into my ears. I really like being aware of the environment around me while allowing me to listen to my audiobooks or music. They're not perfect, though. By leaving your ears open, they can be drowned out by passing traffic if I'm running on a busy road. That's a trade off I'll happily take, though.

The Shokz can be a bit of a pain in the winter, though, with their back loop getting in the way of warm headgear. In those instances, I'll often go with AirPods Pro, using a fleece headband not just for warmth, but to secure the AirPods in my ears so they don't fall out. They're definitely a situational choice, though.
