Marathon Weekend 2025

Well, I've gone and done it again - after telling myself I don't need yet another runDisney jacket - went and pre-ordered the MW Jacket. Nothing wrong with that right?
Thinking of pre-ordering the MW jacket
How likely is it that the jacket will be available in S around 5PM on Wednesday?
Should I just go ahead and purchase it and lose the 20%AP discount?

I finally gave in and bought a used weekend jacket from 2022 (my first race weekend.) I can totally see why they can become a thing to just collect.

Hard to say. The smallest sizes always sell out first, and there's no real rhyme or reason that we can figure out for how much of something they choose to stock. (As an example, the purple Dopey jackets from this year were all sold out before 10am. In all sizes.) Is the $20 savings worth possibly not getting it?

I really wanted the 2022 jacket - was my first Dopey and my first in person races since the start of the pandemic but they were all gone by the time I got into the expo. Being able to preorder means I don’t have to stress out over it.

I also don't recall any of the jackets being around when I got to the expo that weekend, and I was there mid-afternoon. No faith in them being available long after the expo starts so I pre-ordered this time.

SAFD:
A bit late this week. But you’re talking food and I do love food so I will add my belated thoughts.

Magic Kingdom: Either the Village Haus for the flat bread or Pecos Bills fajitas.

Epcot: La Cantina de San Angels for the Tacos and hot sauce! Although the pizza at Connections Eatery is becoming a favorite!

Animal Kingdom: Yak and Yeti, my family loves the sit down restaurant and the quick service.

Hollywood Studios: Geyser Point… As in I am just not a fan of much quick service in HS. We tend to skip meals in HS and head back to the resort for lunch or dinner; buffalo burger by the lake!

Happy holiday weekend!

SAFD:
MK: Man their food sucks... esp after going to Disneyland... we pack a lunch or go to a resort in MK. But I do normally get some yummy treat at Sunshine Tree Terrace...
HS: Easy Ronto Wrap! I try to get the last serving of the breakfast... it is my fav!
Epcot: Love the morraco pavilion quick service... always delicious and normally not to long of a line.
AK: and of course Satuli.

The amount of u who like Habor house scares me... that stuff tastes soo bad.. but I grew up in DC area so I know my proper chowder.

Good afternoon RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). A couple of weeks ago we talked about shoes. After today's swim, I mean run in high humidity, I'm inspired to discuss hydration. How do you stay hydrated during these hot, humid summer runs?

SAFD: I've tried a lot of hydration gear over the years. Handhelds, Nathan Trailmix belts, Camelbacks, Orange Mud Hydraquivers and vest packs, just to name a few. I've settled on the UltraSpire SpeedGoat at this point. Having two 0.5L bottles provides a good amount of capacity while allowing me to carry a couple of different fluids at the same time, if needed. The belt doesn't spin like others I've tried and leaves my back free to breathe, unlike backpack style reservoirs. The bottles also make it super easy to refill from a water fountain or cooler if I need to extend my run. As far as what goes in it, on training runs I generally use Propel or Powerade Zero. When I use it during a longer race, the two bottles are perfect to have one with water and the other with Tailwind. There's also a single bottle version I use when I don't need a full liter load out. It took me a long time to find this setup, but I'm glad I've settled on it.

SAFD: I use a Nathan's insulated handheld as well for my lunch time runs in the Houston summer. About 30 minutes before my run, I will take some electrolyte tablets. For the handheld, I fill it up with ice water. I use it for not only drinks of water, but a quick squirt to the face with the cold water helps out a lot. There are several water fountains on my run. I will stop at those if needed, but the water temp coming out of this is not exactly refreshing.

SAFD: I wear an Aonijie vest full of water for any run of more than 3 miles in the Texas summer heat. I'm a pretty salty sweater, so I may also bring a bottle of LMNT if it's sunny, or else some saltstick chews if I don't want to carry the extra water.. (I have never gotten the hang of the floppy soft bottles that are designed to fit inside the Aonijie vest, so I usually just carry a traditional hard bottle in my hand if I need it, which is a pain.)

SAFD:

I have an UltraAspire handheld that was free-with-purchase during black friday a few years ago. I don't love it because it's too big for my hand. I also have an UA (Nathan, made for Under Armour) hydration belt, and a Nathan Hydration belt. I think I got those for about $12/ea....the UA one was on clearance and an extra 50% off, and the other was from Sierra to get free shipping (so girl-math makes it $4. :rotfl2: ) The downside to these is that they barely fit my phone and then I end up wearing my SPI belt along with the hydration belt, and that's annoying.

Lastly I have a Nathan VaporHowe with a 1.8L no-slosh bladder. Spoiler alert, it still does slosh a little bit, but only when the water level gets down to just above the divider part, and once I get the volume below that it's great. I added on 2 aonji soft flasks to go with it for liquid fuel options because they are a lot easier to clean. Those had a STRONG plastic taste to them when I first bought them, and after some research and asking around, found out that soaking them with vodka inside (YAY for cheap costco vodka!) took almost all of the gross, plastic-y taste away.

Even with all of that, one of my tried-and-true methods is to take a bottle of water and stash it by a power pole or road sign, in the tall grass, about a mile out on my route, because I usually am doing out-and back, T-shaped runs. This allows me to have access to water every few miles without having to actually carry it.

For electrolytes, we buy liquid IV when it's on sale at Costco ($21 for 30 pouches makes it a pretty hard deal to beat) but sometimes we also buy the big things of gatorade powder. LMNT made my super nauseas the one time I tried it. Tailwind is OK. I haven't found a flavor I like yet.

SAFD: I have a Nathan’s handheld that I use sometimes. I kinda hate it, but I can’t use vests or belts because I have sensitive skin that chafes easily. A few times, I’ve run loops that go past my house and just left a bottle of water in the paper box and used my cul-de-sac as water stop.

sAfD: I have a Nathan waist hydration belt with one bottle and I bought a vest for longer training. I don’t know if I like the sloshing in the bladder on my back, but I definitely need more fluids with me once I start Fairytale Training.

I’m looking at the UltraSpire with two bottles since the wait belt works well for me. I fuel with honey and now Untapped maple syrup, plus salt chews. If I want actual food, I go with Welch’s fruit chews.

This is my approach on the trails as well for runs over 4 or 5 miles. I've never carried water / electrolytes. although I should probably get used to them.

SAFD:
I try my very best to avoid heat by running early in the morning or late in the day. Lately that has been a lost cause! I do own a couple hydration vests that I will use if I am doing a long trail run. But most of my regular runs I just carry a hand held and run by a few spots I know I can refill as needed.

I am a big fan of Liquid IV (as a few others have mentioned) it is just perfect in terms of flavoring water but not being too sweet/sugary. I have also noticed that I recover a bit better when I use Liquid IV on long runs or at least after my run is over. I am a big fan of the new Lemon/Lime flavor, as well as the cucumber mojito. Good stuff!

SAFD as wrong as I know it is I get dehydrated. I have one small maybe 8 oz bottle on my running belt that I only carry at 10 or more miles to have a bit when I take a gel. Normally enough for a ten mile slow run, but not enough for 20 miles in July or August. If it gets to be too much I slow sown, but I really dislike carrying more than that.

SAFD: I have a Nathan vaporairess vest I use when I’m training for marathons and only on long runs over 13 miles. I haven’t worn in the summer since my marathon training is over the winter. I doubt I would survive the summer with that on. During summer training, I use a flip belt and carry a normal water bottle with liquid iv. I don’t use any liquid until go 6 miles or more. I do try to make sure I’m staying hydrated the day before though.

SAFD: I’ve been using a couple amphipod 12oz handheld bottles for over a decade - they really hold up! They fit my hands well, have little neoprene jackets that prevent any slipping, and have a little storage pouch for lip balm, gels, etc. Easy to refill at public water fountains or water tables at races.
