Marathon Weekend 2025

I would suggest that if you find bottles on belts to bounce, slosh or spin, you probably haven’t found the belt with the right fit for you. The same can probably be said for vests, too. I gave up on belts for a while because the Nathan options spun and bounced, but the Ultraspire snugs in comfortably and doesn’t move at all on me.
Fully agree with this. My old Fuel Belt bounced quite a bit. My Nathan doesn’t move at all.

I like the flipbelt but you have to make sure it’s tight enough or it will bounce. I have 2 and need to get a new one. My other 2 are too loose now. I prefer a vest on my marathon long runs because I can carry my gels and water and other stuff without much movement. I need to think on what my plan will be for marathon because I like to have my own nutrition and hydration but I was thinking of a costume.

Finally got power back after the hurricane rolled through here. For the South Texas Dis-ers, I hope you all made it through safely and hopefully without any property damage.

Running the morning after a hurricane is surreal. Just taking in all the damage while on the run, makes you kind of forget you are even running. Even though I was on pavement, felt more like a trail run with all the tree debris on the paths.

SAFD - I have an older Nathan hydration belt with two bottles that I adore and use for every outdoor long run. It has a few features that I haven't been able to find on any of their newer products, but unfortunately has a design flaw that causes the holders to beak in one specific location. I've been scavenging parts from other belts (found on eBay) to keep mine going.

I also bought a bottle from FlipBelt at this year's Springtime Expo that fits perfectly in the pocket of my running shorts and is perfect for short runs and/or routes where I know that I'm able to refill often.

I can't do handhelds. I just can't.

We had a really bad storm up here in Dallas a few weeks ago -- not a hurricane, but it still knocked over a TON of trees. It was surreal to run through my normal paths and have to wind around 30-foot-tall trees sitting across the sidewalk! Stay safe. <3

Yes. I had to climb over a fallen tree. Also had some paths completely block and had to hop the drainage canal to get to the street to get around it.

SAFD:

For training runs, I typically do 4-5 mile loops (30-40 min) in my neighborhood. I tend to drink 20-24oz of water from a bottle during mile 3.5-4.0 on each loop, so about 40-48oz of water per hour (definitely on the high side for consumption). When runs are longer than 90 min is when I add in electrolytes during the run itself. Usually in the form of gels (Maurten, Egel) or concentrated Tailwind in a 5oz Hammer nutrition bottle. If a run is going to be particularly hard or very hot, then I'll do some pre-loading with concentrated Liquid IV on runs under 120 min and Maurten 320 on runs longer than 120 min. I rarely need to use the bathroom unless I've consumed too much liquid within 120-15 min of starting the run.

For racing, the only liquid I carry is a 5oz Hammer Nutrition bottle with concentrated Tailwind. On rare occasion, I'll bring a 5oz bottle of water as well. But I tend to only do bigger races with enough aid stations to get 40-48oz of water per hour, or I meet my wife somewhere on course for a water bottle.

I actually chose to run on our normal paths for the first time the literal day they were cleaning the trees up. I am devastated that the large tree branch that gracefully swooped over the path where the blue meets the orange is now gone. 😢 I have been making laps around my neighborhood lately instead but intend to get back down there next week. That storm was insane.

Question about costume/gear for the Marathon….
January will be my first full marathon. I’ve run many half marathons, including at Disneyland in January. I know we still have a few months until the race but I’m starting to think about costumes and wondering what others do, particularly for the marathon, as this is more intense than the half. For the half in January I dressed up as Marie (see pic!), and purchased cheaper leggings and workout top and accessories. Luckily the leggings and top were fine for the race but I was a little nervous as they weren’t my usual brand/type. I ended up pinning a ziplock bag inside my tutu in the back to store my sport beans, and didn’t bring any water on the course. I typically wear sunglasses when I run outdoors but since I finished by 7:30 am it wasn’t a big deal running this race without them.

So my somewhat silly questions are…

Do you wear sunglasses for the full or a costume with a hat? Sounds silly but I think the pics without sunglasses look so much better and I’m assuming I’ll finish around 9:30 am so I know I’ll be running several hours in the sun.

I’m assuming I’ll wear my flipbelt for the marathon to store fuel and water. Do most of you integrate this into your costume? Or just bring fuel and use water on the course?

I guess I’m just looking for feedback on if or how committed I might want to be for the marathon as I obviously want to be comfortable enough to complete the race.

I bring my sunglasses with me for anything more than the 5K. The older I've gotten, the more I need my sunglasses when the sun is out. I'll wear them on my head and you can't really see them in my pictures when it's dark. I'm running the Princess half next year and I'll definitely need them heading back from MK.

I wear my sunglasses on top of my head while it's dark. If I had a costume that involved a headpiece I'd probably make sure I had a leggings pocket or something where I could put them in if on my head didn't work. Unless it's forecasted to be cloudy, I get a headache if I'm squinting into the sun too long. A visor integrated into the costume could replace sunglasses though. (I sure wish I had a visor this year when we got the surprise downpour :hyper: ) You can always take off your glasses for photos, I appreciated them in the sunny miles or I would basically have my eyes closed in the pictures anyways!

If I really cared about how my flipbelt looked I'd probably make sure to get a color that blends in a bit. Like white if you were wearing your Marie costume. I think many people in all out costumes tend to have under layers such as bike shorts with pockets they stuff things into. Definitely want to bring your own fuel as they don't provide many options (or nearly enough, really). For water, it's pretty personal. I use a handheld as I use my own electrolytes and it's easier that way. I also am not great at drinking a lot at once so cups are not my favorite. But since it sounds like you'd be in the earlier wave of finishers, there should be plenty of water to rely on the course if you don't mind only getting it once a mile or two (they do tend to struggle to keep the water filled for the later finishers).

I would do something... visor or sunglasses. I did both but I hate the sun... lol. It gets just si hot and sunny down here. They have some cute visors on Etsy. That is where I got mine. View attachment 875909
I’m loving the Disney visor! I’m thinking if I got a cute visor I could wear my usual running leggings and flip belt, and just need a tank!

Sounds like I need to pick between sunglasses or hat/visor for my pics!

I’m trying (and failing) to remember if it’s the half or the full, but there’s a section of the course where you are running directly facing the sun as it rises and it’s brutal. YMMV based on pace, but I always bring both a hat or visor and sunglasses. Sunglasses are easy to tuck into the back of your waistband if you don’t want them in the picture. I’ve also hung them off my spi belt on the front when my face was getting sweaty and I needed a breeze on my face. I do the same with my hat if I don’t want to wear it (just loop it onto the back of my belt.)

Unless you are going to be a back-of-the-pack finisher, hydration availability shouldn’t be an issue.

I bring sunglasses for Disney races longer than a 10K (I usually finish those just as the sun is rising, so I have them waiting in my gear bag). I keep them in a leggings pocket until I need them, and slip them back into the pocket for character stops.

I can't speak to the half because I only did the shortened course for MW, but "I spent half the race running directly into the rising sun" was my biggest complaint about the full. It is indeed brutal 😵

I bought three of these visors for all six of my races this past January. HIGHLY recommend! You can customize anything or have her make something entirely new. They are well made and easy to adjust fit, and they packed well when I took them across the country and back. https://www.etsy.com/shop/KoquiDesigns

The half is basically an out-and-back from Epcot to MK, which is North-South. The full has you going south from MK to AK, and then it’s almost all East facing the sun back towards Epcot. You only start to face the sun at mile 19, but those last 7 miles are the really fun and easy ones.

This is where it pays to be slower. By the time I’m on Western Way, the sun will already be up!

But also, the sun will be up. 😝
