Marathon Weekend 2024

SAFD: Here’s what I said back in May…
SAFD: I’ve been too busy this spring to give it much thought. It’s all still very up in the air. Ask me again when training starts in September then again in December and by race morning, it may have changed again 😝
It’s definitely changed from September until now but I’m still not quite settled on what it is. I suppose I’ll just go with “have fun!”

SAFD:
My goals are pretty easy this time:
- Finish ahead of the balloon crew and injury free
- Make it into Trader Sam's to add to my already too large tiki mug collection.

Everything else is a bonus here. I'm going to try and do one of the tours, I think Keys to the Kingdom, but I'm not sure when or what date yet.
SAFD: Keeping on track other than having some nagging pain. I booked the Wild Africa Trek for Fri at 12p, hoping that wasn't a mistake in Jan!

SAFD:

1a) make it there feeling healthy and trained (but note I’m not asking for no stress over it, that’s going to happen no matter what 😂)
1b) finish the full without walking, whatever that pace ends up being
1c) enjoy the full!!
2) have fun with my park/resort plans and the weather to do that 🤞
3) have all the C2C logistics work (repeat steps again)

SAFD Goals-
1. Get there healthy and be able to finish. I'm dealing with tendinitis in my left ankle right now which has me feeling like I'm never going to get going again. I'm trying to be patient to let it heal, but missing this prime running weather is killing me. I feel like a lazy sloth. I'm going to add some strength training this week and thinking about some yoga so at least I feel like I'm making use of the down time.
2. Have fun and get some pics with characters I haven't seen before.
3. More park time than this year. I scaled it back a little thinking it would be more relaxing and it was, but I kind of missed the parks.
4. Do something new- restaurant, ride, snack whatever- just something I've never done before.
SAFD
1. Ankle is feeling great. Finally seem to have recovered from nausea and was able to get in a 9 mile run yesterday. If I can keep away illnesses for the next few weeks, I think I'll be good on this one.
2. Still hoping to do this, but maybe only during the 10K.
3. Got my 3 day ticket and my park reservations. My plan is to skip naps this year so that hopefully I'll fall asleep easier. And that should give me more park time.
4. Still not sure what my "new" thing will be. Maybe the Moana attraction.

I just saw that the blue marathon weekend jacket is out of smalls On the website. Will those be available at the expo?

most of the charities (from what I've read) take a CC number when you register with them, and if you don't raise the full amount of funds they charge your card the balance. And generally, you don't get your bib/registration link until you've raised a percentage of the
SAFD:

Goal was to finish Dopey total time in under 7:30. However, having an internal argument that I shouldn’t worry about time and should stay with my kids running all the races. Thinking I have to stay with them for memories and put the time aside. So maybe a new goal of just enjoy my family

The original SAFD goals started on page 116, to save some clicking around. :)

this has not changed.

#4 is up in the air due to a recent calf issue. I might be within sniffing distance of "adequate" depending on how quickly it resolves, or I might be right where I want to be.

#5 is going to be weekend-dependent as well. I'm going to give it my best shot

I'm also going to add in a #6: find someone(s) to run the full with. If I can't find anyone I may just hop in with a pace group post-castle. (I'm anticipating being in D corral, and ideally running intervals for something between 13-14min/mi.)

Honorable mention to riding GotG as many times as possible since we changed from "probably no parks" to "yeah, 5 day hopper!" and having EEH for Deluxe resort guests at Epcot on 2 of our days.
I wouldn't mind someone to run with, and that is right around my pace, looking back at the MCM. But my natural pace will be faster, at least for the initial miles, so linking up post-castle might be an idea. I have no idea what corral I'll be in.

My goals? Hmmm.
1) I was thinking about trying for a PR in the half, but per some good advice, I should find a flat, less expensive race somewhere else and enjoy my Disney runs. (Plus I need to leave something in the tank for the full.)
2) Ride Expedition Everest during the full. It was down for maintenance last time I was there. Plus now I want to see it on my Garmin track....
3) Make it over to Epcot Sat afternoon (after HS in the morning) to ride GotG for just my second time.
4) A less stressful drive down (Should be good on this one. I booked a hotel in south Georgia so that I will be closer to DW on Friday morning and not literally running into the expo at the last minute).
5) Remember to take my medals to the MK on Sunday for photos.
6) Meet up with you guys on Friday at HH (another good reason to break up my drive down).
7) Actually find you guys on Sat and Sun morning....

No marathon this year, so I set no goals aside from finishing the 5K/10K/Half at both WDW and DL. I'll be at the meetups with visible DIS signs, and I do hope to be a supportive spectator for the full, armed with kleenex!
I’m running the half but want to be a supportive spectator for a friend running the marathon. I’ve never been a spectator before so if you have a plan or path or words of wisdom to share I’d love to tag along and/or at least learn more!

Marathon weekend goal: I’m doing Dopey and at this time my goal is to stop at every available character stop for all 4 races. I did it this year for the marathon and Princess challenge. I have a couple marathons before January, so depending on how those go it’s possible this goa could shift to time-based. It will be a blast either way.
I had so much fun doing photos January/February, that I’ll definitely try to do this for Dopey. No real time based goals…

SAFD: No specific goals per se, other than generally wanting to finish the marathon faster/stronger than this year. Was feeling great/on track/pleased with training until a Thanksgiving Day half (which I pushed really hard on)…two days later started feeling some pain in a specific spot on the arch of my right foot. Stretched, ice, skipped a few runs, etc - next run, fine for 25-30 mins into the run then pain came back, pretty much same pattern on every run since. I got in a 2.5 hour run yesterday but it was rough.

Foot doc says likely inflamed plantar fascia around the arch. I’ve had plantar fasciitis in my heel on the other foot on/off forever and just deal with it, but this pain is more localized/intense, harder to just suck up.

So now I have to figure out what to do - rest for a couple of weeks and miss some key training in hopes I can salvage some of the weekend… just run through it (probably not smart)…maybe sit out altogether and just cheer on DW….blah… super annoyed to even have to be thinking about this 30 days out.

Sorry for whining, just annoyed!

SAFD Checked to be sure I went with my usual MW goals

Have fun with family and friends
Finish Dopey with a smile
Meet up with fellows DISboard runners pre race
PR the marathon

Hope to complete them all though the PR only feels like a possibility as opposed to a certainty. Definitely feeling older and slower every time I look at 26.2

SAFD: Since this is my first Dopey, my main goal is just to finish all 4 races without injury. I'm running the DL half the following weekend for C2C, but I'm planning to walk most of that and just enjoy the end to a grueling race season. My lesser important goals are:

1. To eat at a new place in each park (and some resorts possibly)
2. Ride Everest during the full (still kicking myself for not just doing it this year)
3. Finish the full with some sort of drink in hand (beer or margarita)
SAFD: I'd say I am mostly on track for my goals. As I shared a couple weeks ago, my IT band injury from Goofy last year flared back up a bit but I seem to be managing it well using an IT band strap during my runs and the stretches and strengthening exercises y'all shared with me. I was able to do 16 miles yesterday with little to no pain, so maybe I can actually finish Dopey after all. I have also added the Dumbo Double Dare and the 5K to DL weekend since my May post, so I will be walking a lot more than I originally thought.

1. I am not sure this is going to happen actually, but it might if I count QS meals. I intentionally didn't book many ADRs and I'm just going to try to eat when and where I feel like it.
2. I am going back and forth on this. It will be a game-time decision most likely.
3. This will definitely happen!

This is the area where my plantar fascia gets inflamed. Here are a few tips I've found that helped me during Dopey last year-
  • 30 calf raises daily on each calf. Strengthening and stretching those muscles ease the tension in my arch- I continue to try and do these on a regular basis.
  • roll your foot each night on a frozen water bottle
  • use KT tape on every run no matter what the distance. I'd also tape if I was going to be walking a lot at work. This seemed to help tremendously!
  • Change your shoe inserts to use Dr. Scholls athletic/run/arch support. They have several types and I continue to use them even though my plantar fasciitis isn't currently acting up.
  • Alternate between Advil and Tylenol before and/or after your long runs to help with the inflammation
Just a few ideas I thought to share! Hope it heals quickly for you!

You might want to limit any before run medication to Tylenol. Advil can have an adverse impact on the kidneys which can be exacerbated by the dehydration experienced during a run. Similarly, all the advice I’ve seen says to ensure you’ve replaced fluids after a run prior to taking Advil.

Sorry to hear you are going through this. I am in a similar position with a pulled groin. Everything I have read about pulled groins says that running 48 miles in a month is probably not the best idea and can lead to a longer recovery. My thought process is that I know I have been training and that since I have been running for a few years now, I know that I can get through the distance if I can handle the pain. Even if I take off the next couple of weeks, I should still be in good enough condition to run Dopey without really struggling. My game plan is that if I take it is for 5k, 10k, and the half, then I can push through the full marathon. It may require frequent stops to the medical tent for BioFreeze, Tylenol, and to get re-wrapped, but I think I can push through. As far as taking longer to recover, what else am I training for? MW is my really big event each year. Other than that it is just local small runs. I know that doesn't help a ton, since everyone has their own situation, but just putting out there what my thoughts are with also coming into MW with an injury.

It's my first time spectating at rD, so I'm just thinking of what I appreciate when I'm running. (And I asked this thread maybe a month ago for ideas. That's where the kleenex suggestion came from. There is some question whether Disney security will allow anything to be handed off, so I don't want to plan on too much.)

I'm staying at Bay Lake, so I plan to go down to the road super early and hang out until the balloon ladies go by. If the route is similar to the past few years, it should be about mile 7 or 8 (iirc). So I should have time to jump on the monorail and do some more cheering in Epcot (may walk over to IG or Boardwalk).

REMINDER to anyone running the marathon: I am willing and able to take things you may not want to run with, but don't want to toss. I'll be on site until Wednesday morning and will be going to DATW. I can also be a drink/snack runner in Epcot for any treats you may want to finish with. Once maps come out, I'll find the best place to be strategically. If the route is similar to the last few years, probably where the course goes backstage near Norway.
