Marathon Weekend 2024

I am only going to bring two pairs of running shoes this year to save on luggage space, so I will bring Brooks Ghosts for both. I have a few faster shoes but I don't run for speed for runDisney so comfort it is. I think trying a different style is fine as long as you can get at least one long run in them to know they'll work. I find socks make a huge difference in comfort as well. I mostly wear balega hidden comforts and when I don't, especially for 10+ miles, the soles of my feet will get a bit sore.

For my 2 Dopeys, I’ve worn 4 different pairs of shoes - but I’ve used my 5k or 10K shoes as my park shoes so that I’m not bringing 5 or 6 pairs. I’ve only done one Goofy (the infamous 2017 MW) and can’t remember what I did for that - I suspect I brought 2 pairs.

Really leaning towards another pair of the Adrenalines right now. I’ve been reading about the Levitates and wonder if they will be a bit too firm for my liking. I was able to put the Adrenalines on and go out for a good 6+ miles with no issues and have done all my longer mile days in them with no issues. I may just be overthinking all of this. Maybe I need another hobby to distract me from my current hobby. 🤔

We are just over 30 days from WDW MW, so I'd like to offer some thoughts, observations, and words of encouragement to anyone having doubts about the races or their conditioning.

For those that don’t know me, I’m older, have asthma, still overweight, and a poster child for “unsure if I can do this”. I wasn’t sure I could do 6 miles before I did my first 10K. Then I wasn’t sure about my first half, ditto my first full marathon. And with each race distance, my confidence grew and I went on to conquer the next distance, culminating in completing the Dopey last year.

  • Barring some physical injury or severe illness, you can do this. You can walk a 16 min/mile pace, and that clock doesn't start until the last of the last wave crosses the finish line.
  • Don't think you can run the whole distance? You don't have to. Run or jog as much as you can to build up a pace buffer and then walk briskly. You may not have a ton of time for photos, but you'll finish ahead of the balloon ladies. If you haven’t tried one of the run/walk methods, they do work.
  • Had your training interrupted? Not good, but if you haven’t missed more than a couple of weeks, you aren’t going to lose that much tone. If you’re able to get back to some training runs in the next couple of weeks, you’ll be able to finish.
  • Don’t feel like you’ll set a new PR? Find a race that is cheaper and closer to home for a PR and enjoy running at Disney.
  • Don’t feel like you’ve trained for the full distance, or for a long enough distance? You’ll be fine. The race excitement and adrenaline will take you the rest of the way.
  • On that point, I have never trained the full distance of a race. For my first 10K, I think I did about 5 miles for my longest run. (Ironically, I can now do a 10K as an afternoon neighborhood run. I never would have thought that 20 years ago.) For my recent races, around 9 miles has been my longest run.
  • No, I’m not the fastest runner, but I finish, and am usually fast enough to stop for character photos in the Disney races. The tongue-in-cheek HARM method in my signature does work. The upside: you’ll finish races, have minimal training injuries (a recent cramp/hamstring pull has been my first training injury that wasn’t due to my odd foot bones), and have minimal recovery time during the week. The downside: you probably won’t win any races or one of the age categories. But you’ll still have nice shiny medals on your wall.
  • Still worried about finishing in time? Head to the corral early to be near the front and give yourself as much time buffer as possible.
  • Nervous about the crowd? You’ll be amongst thousands of friends at the most expensive happiest place on earth.
  • Go apex to apex on the curves so that you aren’t running further than necessary. I used to get on one side of the road and stay there; do that and your race gets longer by a non-trivial amount. (For the WDW marathon, I calculated something like .26 miles extra by not straightening the curves).
  • Don’t think you can finish? Think again. If you’ve trained at all, you can finish.
  • And if during the race you don’t think you can finish? Press on; you can do it.
  • Make sure to have fun and don’t forget to wear your medal in the park.

I wear the same brand and model shoe for all my races. I will bring two pairs for Dopey. I wear them for training - I rotate 2-3 pairs. I also have another pair that I use for OrangeTheory. I don’t have any problems wearing the same shoe for everything. I do have a different brand shoe for walking around.
Many new shoes will make half my toes/feet go numb. When I find a shoe that works, I stick with it until it doesn’t.

I'm a one shoe girl - I just wear a pair until it wears out and then I get another pair in the same model. I track mileage and going back and forth between shoes is too much work! Currently in Saucony guides
I do bring a second pair of shoes to walk around the parks (my old running shoes usually!), and a pair of Oofos if it's warm enough.

Maybe they could cut back on how many they take so the normal purchase pool is bigger.
Just curious... does anyone know if Disney gives these bibs to the charities for free? Or do the charities pay Disney for the bibs hoping to come out ahead on the deal?
I'm a bit late to the discussion, but I work for a national animal welfare non profit and looked into doing race bibs a few years ago. It's a very expensive and labor-intensive process from the charity side. There is a minimum number of bibs you have to commit to, and it's a lot for high profile races. The payment is required pre-race, but timing varies depending on each race organizer.

Because you are basically facilitating a registration up-front, the safest thing for the charity is to take a payment method at registration and have an agreement that states the date at which payment will be taken. It is up to the runner to fundraise or donate out of pocket (either the whole amount or the difference) by that date. Typically the person will take the payments directly and makes one big donation (or reimburses themselves) or some non profits provide a personalized fundraising portal they have to go through for the donations to count toward their bib.

ALL the admin of registration, agreements, tracking, pre-race events or communications and fulfillment (group shirts, their own swag, and mailing of such) fall to the non profit. During a race season it can be a full time job. Not everyone has enough resources to do that, and it is one reason the fundraising amounts are often so high. Ultimately that's why we decided not to do bibs for a larger race, but instead host our own local 5Ks. It was actually a lot more economical as we could trade out in-kind donations for a lot of the physical needs (timing, water stops, finish line refreshments, swag, etc) and keep most of the fees for our programs. We offered an optional fundraising component, or a one-time donation at registration, which most people also did. Those donations were smaller than the usual fundraising minimums, but more impactful as more of those dollars went directly to the animals.

Shoe Question: Do you run back to back races like Goofy in the same style/make of shoe, or go with completely different brands for each race or maybe a different style of the same brand?
For Dopey I have rotated between two pairs of the same model shoe for each race (one for 5K/Half and another for 10K/Full). It also helps with packing! I do not wear my race shoes for anything else during the weekends, and have typically used them for training for at least a month before the races.

Good Morning runDisney All-Stars!! It is time for Sundays Are For Disney. And it is time to return to our goals. Way back on May 7th I asked you all to share your goals for Marathon Weekend. Go take a look at your goals, are you still on track, have your goals changed, if so what are they now? If you did not share goals, share them now - remember they can be about any part of marathon weekend, from running, costumes, park time, snacks, etc.

My goals and updates:

Goal 1: Ride GOTG at least 5 times! (Hoping to get my last 2 songs).
Update: I only need to get one now - Disco Inferno. I get that one and I am done. Got the other during a trip over the Summer.

Goal 2: Get an ADR for Beaches and Cream, which I have managed to fail at for the last three trips…
Update: Score! DInner ADR for after the Half (may regret it during the full!)

Goal 3: PR the Marathon
Update: No chance, this has not been the year I had hoped for, but I am On the up swing and have high hopes for 2024. I think I can still going to shoot for a sub-5.

Have a good week all!

The original SAFD goals started on page 116, to save some clicking around. :)

SAFD:

I'm doing the Dopey challenge and I only have 3 goals for MW:
#1 - Finish.
#2 - Ride Everest during the full.
#3 - See #1 :P

Outside of the actual races, I want to continue my tradition of post-half mimosas. I'm thinking of trying either Olivia's or GF Café. Don't think I'll have the energy to do anything after the full.
this has not changed.
Sooo yeah. Stealing this. Samsies!

And I’ll add
#4 - be adequately trained
#5 - get more sleep than last year and not be a hot mess for Saturday and Sunday.

Mimosas at Chef art smith’s are kinda my thing after the half, though. @azrivest Did you try the mimosa flight at WL?
#4 is up in the air due to a recent calf issue. I might be within sniffing distance of "adequate" depending on how quickly it resolves, or I might be right where I want to be.

#5 is going to be weekend-dependent as well. I'm going to give it my best shot

I'm also going to add in a #6: find someone(s) to run the full with. If I can't find anyone I may just hop in with a pace group post-castle. (I'm anticipating being in D corral, and ideally running intervals for something between 13-14min/mi.)

Honorable mention to riding GotG as many times as possible since we changed from "probably no parks" to "yeah, 5 day hopper!" and having EEH for Deluxe resort guests at Epcot on 2 of our days.

SAFD: My goals are pretty simple this year as the I’m Doing C2C instead of Dopey.
- Make it to the HH meetup for the first time
- finish the Half
- have fun
SAFD: Luckily I chose some pretty realistic goals this year.

- Make it to HH - Flying in Thursday and being solo this year I don’t have any family obligations so I expect to it make finally!
- finish the half - I’m ready from a training perspective
- have fun - this will hopefully be the easiest goal!

I couldn't find my goals, so I'll share them now.

#1 - Finish all the races feeling strong so I can enjoy the trip with my family. If this means running slower, so be it.
#2 - make it to one of the meet ups. This is probably the goal I'm most nervous for!
#3 - find a way to make the 3am wakeup and waiting around less painful for my 6 year old.

I didn’t post anything earlier this year but these are my main goals:

(1) Finish Goofy (it’s my first marathon)
(2) Not be destroyed afterward
(3) Be fast enough to not get warnings about the Balloon ladies
(4) Not be too obsessive and drive my husband insane

I think I’ll probably be good for everything but number 4. 😁

Still on track for my goals as well. Billy advised to use the "Less is more" mantra this training cycle as I have no time goals. Feels great to run without putting too much pressure on myself. I've already run more, with 5 weeks to go, than I did for my last marathon training cycle. I'm confident I can finish.

We booked Cape May Café for after the half. I figure it's a nice place to get pictures with Donald and Daisy of my Donald/Daisy medal.

SAFD: With the recent groin injury in my right leg, and the recent runner’s knee/patellar tendinitis is my left knee, goals have definitely changed. The goal was to try to beat my last year‘s marathon time of 3:56 and to try to complete Dopey in a total of 7 hours to 7:15. Now it’s just getting through all the races in the least amount of pain. Figure I am going to have to take it easy for the 5k, 10k, and half so that I am in the least amount of pain for the full. I still have hopes that the groin starts to feel better and I can maybe pick it up a little bit in speed. But heck, this may be the year I finally stop and take some character photos.

This year I did say I would try to do some type of costume for my first time, I think I may be doing that for the marathon. So I can possibly knock that goal off. :)

Final goal is to finally make it to a meet up before one of the races. I had the family in tow last year and they kept making me late to the starting area. This year I am riding solo for most of the races. So going to try to get there early.

SAFD: My goals for Marathon Weekend are simple:

  • Attend Hurricane Hannah's and pre-race meet-ups to see old friends and put faces to screen names for new ones
  • Run all 4 races at training paces so I'm ready to transition into training for my March A race
  • DATW
  • Bonus goal: not bring back any random illnesses
I'm on track for the 3 non-running-related goals for MW. Given the state of my quad & medial hamstring, though, I'll likely be running at significantly slower than training paces. At this point, I'm thinking that I may need to skip my March race and spend the first part of the year resting my legs to try and knock out these nagging issues I've been having. That's a post-MW decision, though.
