Marathon Weekend 2021

SAFD: I hate rain, but can deal with it in the heat of summer - preferred parks in the rain are MK and AK, where it's relatively easy to duck in and out of rides, or walk with an umbrella on sheltered paths. But cold and rain? Nope. I stay home. The perk of being local(ish).

Catching up on SAFD's:

Happy Place: Tower of Terror - always makes me smile and giggle like a little girl.

Training: Smaller trail races seem to be the only races happening in my area, so I've recommitted to trail running and finally have two races (5k & 10K) on the schedule for November!!

Rainy Day: We don't alter our touring too much when it rains, just throw on a hat or poncho.

SAFD Training: It's been a mixed bag as of late. Major work pressures necessitate training going on the backburner in early October and between heat, air quality, and work pressures, September was a mixed month. Now I'm getting back into the swing of things as I gear up for the assorted virtual runDisney events I signed up for. Those are really just precursors to a hoped for, but certainly not guaranteed Star Wars race weekend come April.

SAFD Raining: This is a tough one. I remember a December wherein it rained all day long and then some at Disneyland. That made for a cold, wet, and honestly tough day. At some point, wet is wet, but if you get soaked, then it can be miserable. Best thing is to stay dry. And if you can drifit jackets, take those. We were at Disneyland last year and I was the only one without a poncho. Instead I used a Nike drifit jacket. A few hours later after the rain had stopped, I was easily the most dry out of everyone.

SAFD: It all depends.

Am I already at the park? If so and it’s a light rain, then it’s busy as usual. If it’s a heavier rain than it’s shopping time. Ideal at shops that connect from the inside. Or if at MK, then a stop at Crystal Arts is always a good way to pass a heavy downpour.

If not already at a park, the. Probably some hotel hoping. Doing a monorail loop is always a good time. Of if it’s a real downpour then it’s getting a cup of coffee/tea, grabbing a book and going down to the lobby to read/people watch.

‘I’ve cancelled for Marathon Weekend, but the date range also covers Star Wars. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t have the discount available for CBR standard rooms, so I had to switch over to CSR to get the full benefit. It cut ~1/3 off my reservation, though, so I can live with that!

So I believe I have read that you can’t run through DS before it opens, but does anyone know if you can get to the bridge-crosswalk at the edge of DS from Saratoga to cross the street and run outside of Disney? I’m thinking maybe not, because it looks too much like it is ‘in’ DS.

For the 2020 Marathon Weekend, I was able to walk from the Holiday Inn over the the bus pickup location in Saratoga Springs at 2:30am. The overpasses were open and I could walk all the way to Saratoga on sidewalks.

Oh, yay!! I was hoping I would be able to add some off property running to my marathon plans, so I won’t have to worry about a mask as much (maybe... hopefully there won’t be as many people on the sidewalks over there??)

I ran my NYC virtual yesterday. We’ve had rain and snow in Iowa this week, but I lucked out with perfect weather.

Biggest hurdle was my phone battery constantly appearing to drain, so I had to make a pit stop to charge it for 10-15 minutes around Mile 16. Kind of nerve racking trying to run when you’re 4 miles from home, tracking a run on your phone and it’s a 1 percent battery.

I tried to incorporate some NYC into my run - Subway (restaurant) stops, bagels, a deli, Broadway Street and my “finish line” at the Statue of Liberty. I’ll also say the app for the race was nicely done.

Good luck to everyone else doing the NYC virtual.

They’re supposed to be shipped after the event date, so I’d expect late January through mid-February for receiving Marathon Weekend items.
