Marathon Weekend 2017!

Yep that's how mine went. I ran a 10K then a half this year and now I'm considering something like goofy or dopey.

That's me exactly! Never even ran a 5K, went straight for my first 10K this year, then the Half a Half that was Wine & Dine, then another Half Dec 12th so I could actually run a Half. I am running Princess in 2 weeks, then another Half at home on March 6th so I can get my Half Fanatic status. Then the Diva Half in May. After that signing up for the Gauntlet Challenge at Avengers weekend all leading up to running Goofy next January! I just started running last March and never, ever thought I would ever be a runner! :)

Same for me! Started off four years ago wanting to run a Warrior Dash so I started running some 5ks. Got hooked and eventually, 3 years later, I ran my first marathon/Goofy and shaved two full minutes off my original, introduction-to-running pace. You never know what you might do once the bug bites :thumbsup2

I think runDisney in particular sucks a lot of us in for distances we didn't necessarily plan on in the first place!

I am scared to death of this and you want me to do a 1/2 marathon? :scared:

I have been MIA for a few days. It has been pretty warm up here in CT the last couple of days so I have been outside and getting in some walking. It is February now and I have set a goal of 5 lbs weight loss this month. My doctor days between 1 and 2 pounds a week is healthy.

I love the excitement of this thread. I was on another thread before, that I thought might be encouraging, but I got a PM from someone and it wasn't all that welcoming at all. I am hoping this one is better.

Count me as one of the many who said they could never run a marathon. In 2011, I ran my first 5k in April. In 2012, I ran my 2nd 5k in April. Then I ran my first 10k in September. In January 2013, I rand the WDW Half Marathon and ran three more later that year. I ran my first marathon as part of Dopey in 2014 and have done 3 more marathons since. I'll be running my 4th marathon in Jan 2017!

As everyone else has said...just wait. I started off in 2008 hoping to someday complete a 5K. Since then I have been upping my distances and have done the WDW marathon 3 times (twice as part of a challenge)...currently planning out marathons 4 and 5 (again, challenges). Juuuuust you wait. ;)

Save this post for yourself- once you've been sucked in to the running obsession and have run a half you'll look back at this and giggle! :rotfl:

Also a CT'er myself- hasn't this winter thaw (or whatever they're calling it) been great? I hate to say that I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop and the cold weather to come back, haha! Great to enjoy while we can with some outdoor exercise!

Good luck on your weight loss journey this month! :cheer2:

Thank you all for the encouragement and hope. I'm not big on self confidence so it is nice to hear from others that it can be done. I love Disney so I'm guessing if they are as much fun as you all say I will become addicted as well.

I would certainly love to finally be able to say I am in shape for once in my life.

I did go back and read a lot of the marathon thread from last year and watch the videos posted. What a great group of people on that thread, some who are also on this one. And nobody looked very unhappy in those videos, that's for sure.

Count me in for the Goofy in 2017! Before running the marathon this year (my first marathon), I was saying it was my "one and done" marathon. It was incredibly tough, and I broke down in happy/exhausted tears seeing my husband at the finish line. As we were walking over to Epcot just after the race, my husband asked, "What's with all these people with extra medals?" I explained the Goofy and Dopey Challenges, and he cheerily said to me, "So, what do you want to do next year?" And that's when I decided on the Goofy Challenge. :)

When does everyone start booking rooms for the marathon weekend? Can you get a better rate if you book now or do a package with a travel agent and get your bib too

That's pretty much exactly what I did in 2012...was sitting in an ice bath post-marathon vowing "never again"...then the next day I was in the airport waiting for my flight home and found myself searching for training plans to use for Goofy 2013. :teeth:

Does Goofy sell out super fast? Like in minutes? Or hours? I hate registration day lol!

Last year goofy didn't sell out as fast as say Dopey or the half. The marathon itself was open for quite sometime.

Yeah, I saw that with the marathon last year. So with our original plan to just run that I thought we would be fine. Now with the plan to do Goofy I am stressing again! So what exactly is "not as fast"? Hours? Days? Minutes? lol thanks!

I don't remember what it was 2016, but for the 2015 races they were practically begging people to sign up for Goofy. They even split some of the Goofy entries into extra half marathon and marathon entries ("Goofy Giveback"). I was shocked since it was the 10th anniversary, but I think a lot of people figure if they're going to do Goofy, why not throw in the 5K and 10K and go Dopey.

My guess...Goofy will still go a little slowly until 2019. People want to do Dopey for the 5th, but I think once that passes the price will potentially be too high and the novelty will wear off. That's when Goofy will start selling quickly again. But I could be wrong. :)

well it Definitely wasn't minutes. I think it was at least a few days but don't remember for sure. I'm contemplating goofy or dopey for next year.

I registered for W&D this year and it sold out in less than 30 minutes so I was a little stressed out. I had to register 2 of us. I am happy to hear I will have more time with Goofy! I am also registering DD and I for Avengers Gauntlet Challenge in April too! Hopefully that one is a slow seller too! #GoodbyeMoney

On the website it says Jan 4 to the 8 2017, for those who did this (dopey) this year- is the 4th the first day of the expo? Or is it the first day of races. Need to book my DVC, and I don't know how much earlier to book for....

Still deciding what to do; but being DVC, if I expect a room (and not have to moove 50990383083 times) I have to book this weekend early. Sad thing when I'd rather run Dopey than spend Christmas at Disney lol.

Also, if you were trying to maximize medals- that is to get a ton of medals over the course of a race weekend and eventually the year; but give a (still at that time) relatively new runner proper recovery time- would you:
1. Do Dopey in Jan, GSC in Feb, and PDC in May
2. Do Dopey in Jan, Dumbo in September
3. Do Dopey in Jan, GSC in Feb, PDC in May, and Dumbo in September

I realize #3 would be netting the most medals (by my calculations you'd also get two C2C medals even if they go back to the old rules) but I'm not sure I could mentally pull that much running off. It would mean hardcore training all summer into Dopey, keeping it up for Princess GSC in Feb, giving only a small taper before May's Pixie Dust. So literally, for the better part of a year I'd be training, training, training (said in Roz's voice) always training.

As someone who literally took their first running steps just under a year ago, I don't know if #3 is honestly realistic and plausible. Then, same thing for #1. Isn't it funny though, that I'm like "oh, but then I'd ONLY be doing two challenges if I went with #2"? Funny how Disney races change your whole perspective on running and distance. :rolleyes1:p

I'm registered for #3 - also including the 5ks along with GSC, PDC and Dumbo - for this year. It just worked out because it was the year that I had the time and we had the financial flexibility to do so (along with me receiving quite a few of the registrations as "gifts" for Christmas, birthday, anniversary).

Going forward, I'm only planning to do Marathon Weekend and Disneyland Weekend - unless, for some reason, the lady weekends really stick with me or I have friends going that I want to join.
