Marathon Weekend 2017!

So DD26 and I were going to do the full in 2017, now we plan on doing Goofy. I would like to heed some advice on here a do a full beforehand. But living in the deep south, most of the marathon's close enough for me to go to are in late fall/winter/very early spring. So the only one that I could possibly train for is on October 29, 2016. Does that leave enough time in between it and Goofy for recovery and getting ready to run another (plus the half!)?

That's plenty of time for recovery. Personally, I would not run a non disney marathon before. My first marathon back in 2012 was the disney, and to be honest, other marathons just aren't as fun for me. I've done Rock and Roll Savannah full, and it was a good race, but not as motivating and fun as disney. What if you run another marathon in the fall and hate it? I would suggest you train and do several 1/2 marathons beforehand - one in the spring and one in the fall. The fall one can be incorporated into your goofy training schedule. Good Luck!

I think that's enough time, just gotta make sure you give your body enough time to recover afterward.

Personally I think that the biggest benefit of doing a marathon before Goofy or Dopey is mental - you'll have the confidence of knowing you have done 26.2 before and it will (hopefully) make the challenge less daunting.

That's what we were thinking. DD is now trying to get me to come visit her and run one earlier in October, on the 9th. I would love to - but it's in Boulder, CO and I live at sea level lol! I told her it may kill me. :)

Nope - you've got to register one at a time. Or have two windows up when you log in so you can hold your place in the queue. It took Dopey a couple of hours to sell out for this year, so if you're on right at Noon EST, you should be good.
Did the Dopey sell out so only AP holders could register? Are any places held back so folks (like DW and I) who do not go enough to buy APa can still register?

Thanks!

I've traditionally done Rocket City Marathon (around Dec 12th) and then Goofy. I race RCM and cruise the Goofy, so you should be good to go with an October Marathon.

Disney only releases a small percentage of slots for early registration. Typically less than 10%, IIRC. So no need to worry about slots not being available for general registration. That being said, Dopey sells out very quickly once general registration opens.

What a difference a week makes! Last weekend I couldn't run due to the ice and snow; today was beautiful - sunny and in the 50's! Took the dog down to a greenway for a nice 3.5 mile run. We were not the only ones enjoying the weather and we saw lots of other runners out there.

I hope everyone is keeping the enthusiasm going and getting those base miles in. Right now I'm focusing on just building a solid base, and pace is not really a concern. I'm planning a half in June to get POT, but since I'm not going to try to set any PR's doing Goofy, I just want to stay out of the rear corrals.

So, a little off topic, but have any of you picked up a pair of the special runDisney New Balance shoes? I've always thought they looked pretty cool. I might grab a pair if the designs are good this year and designate them as WDW-only shoes.

I bought the goofy's last year and I bought the dumbo's this year. I'm a bit of a shoe addict and when you mix Disney and shoes I must have them.

It depends on how you gauge your body's recovery ability and what volume of training you've done prior to the marathon. My opinion is that it takes most first timers about 4 weeks to recover from a marathon. A short buildup takes about 12 weeks to build back up to peak fitness. Thus, I would argue you would need a minimum of 16 total weeks to make a full recovery and get back in peak fitness shape for a followup marathon. You can choose to reduce the recovery or the build up but you likely won't be in peak physical shape. If you have less than 16 weeks, yes you can finish the Goofy but it might not go as well without optimal recovery and training from a prior marathon. The caveat as I pointed out in the beginning is your body's personal ability to recover. Some people recover from various endurance races easier so you might be a lucky one and need less than 16 weeks.

Thanks for the replies! We have decided to do one a little earlier, Oct 9th, instead. It allowes for a longer time limit, almost 7 hours as opposed to the first one I thought about doing which only allowes 6. :)

I bought a pair of the Mickeys this past January. I run exclusively in asics but I needed a new pair of everyday walking shoes so I couldn't resist. They are quite comfortable.

For those who are pretty sure it'll be Dopey in '17 for them- will you do any other races that year? I kind of want more medals so maybe I'll do another challenge later that year on the opposite coast. Holy Bling Batman. That'd be a lot of medals.

DW (she's the runner in the family) and I are planning to run:

- Kirkland, WA Mothers Day 1/2 (3rd time for both of us)
- Seafair Pirate 8K in July
- Portland, OR Full (our 1st marathon) in early October
- Wine & Dine 1/3 (my 1st 1/2 in WDW, her 3rd) in early November

We're going to follow Mr Galloway's plans.

This thread is very motivating for us to hear from newborns like us, non-runners like me and those who have been there done that for the Dopey.

Yes. And it helps to know what's out there.

After a 2 year hiatus from Run Disney events, it looks like I'm coming back in 2017 for my 2nd Dopey! I'm so excited. If it's true that 2017 is an anniversary year for the Half Marathon, it will be an even easier sell to my wife. She will do the half marathon and I'll do that with her. So excited to be getting back to Disney!!!

Nope. No proof of time required for the 10k! BUT - it's a great chance to get a PoT for your first half marathon! :D

I am scared to death of this and you want me to do a 1/2 marathon? :scared:

I have been MIA for a few days. It has been pretty warm up here in CT the last couple of days so I have been outside and getting in some walking. It is February now and I have set a goal of 5 lbs weight loss this month. My doctor days between 1 and 2 pounds a week is healthy.

I love the excitement of this thread. I was on another thread before, that I thought might be encouraging, but I got a PM from someone and it wasn't all that welcoming at all. I am hoping this one is better.

Save this post for yourself- once you've been sucked in to the running obsession and have run a half you'll look back at this and giggle! :rotfl:

Also a CT'er myself- hasn't this winter thaw (or whatever they're calling it) been great? I hate to say that I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop and the cold weather to come back, haha! Great to enjoy while we can with some outdoor exercise!

Good luck on your weight loss journey this month! :cheer2:

Yep that's how mine went. I ran a 10K then a half this year and now I'm considering something like goofy or dopey.

That's me exactly! Never even ran a 5K, went straight for my first 10K this year, then the Half a Half that was Wine & Dine, then another Half Dec 12th so I could actually run a Half. I am running Princess in 2 weeks, then another Half at home on March 6th so I can get my Half Fanatic status. Then the Diva Half in May. After that signing up for the Gauntlet Challenge at Avengers weekend all leading up to running Goofy next January! I just started running last March and never, ever thought I would ever be a runner! :)
