Marathon Weekend 2017!

Good morning, runDisney All-Stars!

It's sitting at a balmy -11 here in Iowa with a projected hi of -3. I'm glad I got my run in yesterday.

Three weeks to go! In recognition of the holiday season, this week's Sundays are for Disney question is: What is on your marathon weekend wishlist? It can be running related, Disney-related or something else, but what are you hoping for during the race weekend?

My wishlist:
- Avoid multiple, epic meltdowns with the toddler at the park.
- Finish my first marathon on both feet.
- FINALLY see and photograph IllumiNations
- Get some quality alone time at MK at night after DW and DD have gone to bed.
- Ride Splash Mountain multiple times.

My wish list includes the following:
- Finish Dopey under 8 hours.
- Eat my weight in Mickey Premium Bars!
- Spend time with my family. Similar to @CheapRunnerMike we are surprising our girls with this trip on Christmas morning. I have a complicated unveiling planned; very excited!
- Getting to meet you all and put faces and names to all the disnames.

Finished my Dopey Simulation this morning, so now the taper begins and the trip is just around the corner!

Ha, I should definitely add your number 6 to my list! Any tips?!

Yes! To list just a few:
  • Club lounge. When he is with us at WDW, we try to stay CL unless no discounts are available. Split stay this time, but mostly CL.
  • Work time. No problem if he needs to get some work done and join us in the parks later.
  • Spectating. I can see him/the kids at the finish line (or the resort) and they don't need to find me on the course. But he always does anyway! :)
  • Expo Avoidance. I avoid bringing him to the expo.
  • Restaurants. I book ADRs for signatures and restaurants he enjoys - at least one TS per day.
  • Training. I train so that I can finish my race and be ready for the day with him and the kids.
  • Date night. We don't go out to dinner without the kids at Disney, but a short lounge date is always on the agenda!
Good luck!!

@DopeyBadger - Many thanks for the e-gel recommendation. It took me a few long runs to get used to them, but now that I have my needs figured out these gels have turned out to be perfect for my needs. I completed a slow 24 miler today (slow on purpose, as I was trying to mimic my stop/start strategy in WDW). I never felt the energy highs or lows that I have become accustomed to over the years on runs longer than 20 miles. With 3 runs longer than 20 miles in the last 6 weeks, all using e-gels, and all with great energy, I think that I have found my new formula for success.

:thumbsup2

Happy to help! I'll pass the credit to @JohnVN (McFlurry John, who seems to not have an account anymore or misspelled) who when I was a lurker many years ago recommended e-gels to the crowd. Been using them ever since and haven't looked back. Great combination of everything I'm looking for. Glad to hear they are working out for you as well!

That would be awesome!! I'll also put some sort of DIS bat-signal on our signs. Which if nothing else will freak out DH! :littleangel:

Awesome, will do!

Also, seems appropriate to pull this out now.

Usually run at a 9 min/mile pace, but need to try REALLY hard to slow myself down (per instructions from my physical therapist)...we'll see how that goes haha

.

Going to go with no goals at all. Just going to do whatever feels good at the moment running wise and keep the trip as simple and enjoyable as possible.

I think it's got a space in the name @John VN .

:welcome:

Sorry to hear training hasn't been the easiest this year. I'd say that running your first marathon (assuming since HM first was Jan 2016) in Goofy is definitely an accomplishment no matter how you cross the line. Whether it be first or last. (But the feeling of accomplishment is individual so by no means do I want to tell you how to feel about it.) But I guess I see it that way regardless of the distance. If this were your first 5k, I'd say congrats on the accomplishment. I can understand being frustrated with a training cycle that didn't go your way, but chin up. Try to remain positive and find some reason or goal as to why this will be the best Goofy run ever!!!

Motivation is truly a personal thing. For me, I know that I won't reach the lofty goals I set for myself some years ago unless I get out there and do it. That's why my running motto is "If you want it, PROVE IT, by doing what is necessary to get it." I'm motivated by goals. Others are by food, or alcohol, or weight loss, or competitive siblings, or because a friend/parent told them they couldn't do it. Ask yourself, "Why did I sign up for Goofy?" That's the reason I would use to getting out there and crushing it. I hope you can reinvigorate those fires that got you going the first time around. There isn't much time left until race day so don't treat these last few days as a cramming session. Just do the best you can on race day and be happy and proud about it. And if I see you cross the finish line, I'll make sure to call you a "Goof"! :goofy:

Thank you for the advice, it's been extremely motivating when I've been trying my best not to compare myself to last year. I signed up for goofy after I trained for the half and made my goal (to run in 2 hours or under). I genuinely never thought I'd run a marathon until I completed the half last year. I liked pushing myself and knew I would train for goofy to feel the same satisfaction after I trained for the half. Unfortunately, I wasn't expecting to move down here to work for disney, nor was I expecting my job to be as physically taxing as it is. I think I have to modify my new goal to be "just finish - injury free". I know I can do it, I know a lot of it is mental. I am taking advice not to try to cram, but I'm still running way more now than I was a month ago. I can't thank you enough for helping me switch my goals/motivation to something that will be attainable. I don't have a lot of support down here, I'll be running and crossing the finish line by myself, so the virtual support is more than appreciated.

My wishlist:
-Finish the half with a decent time
-Finish the full standing up
-Stop for characters during the full
-Injury free weekend
-Meet some of you lovely people

Wishlist:

1. I wish for 55-60 degree weather, with a slight breeze
2. To not have full-on waterworks during the majority of the race because I get emotional already during my training runs
3. To freaking love every minute of my first runDisney weekend, because I've already booked a room for Wine & Dine....

@Keels will have us on #TeamKeels dressed up in matching shirts. We should be easy to spot.

Because I KNOW @FFigawi loves matching shirts!

This cracks me up. I want to say I remember @FFigawi talking @Keels into her first dopey a couple of years ago on these boards. Look how far you guys have come! Like, matching race shirts level! I feel like I was in on the ground floor of this or something.

If @Keels can come to Panama City Beach to support me in my Ironman, the least I can do in return is wear the awesome shirts she's designed for us.
