Marathon Weekend 2016

Hey everyone! I missed a lot on this thread -- work got crazy busy during the last two weeks of the year.

Not much has changed, but I gave up on my costume idea. Didn't have time to pull it together, and then they announced the new costume policy . . . I bought a throwaway jacket at the thrift store. It is an old FedEx jacket, so if it is cold, I guess I'll be dressed as a FedEx delivery person. :rotfl2:

I got a mild muscle strain in my leg -- during my taper, of all things -- so we'll see how it behaves on Sunday. I have been doing lots of RICE and it is better. I expect to finish but I may have to adjust my expectations on time.

Other than that, just the expected butterflies. Arrive in Orlando late tomorrow morning. So excited -- good luck, everyone! :tiptoe:

Raising another runner to leave me in the dust...

Mickey mile results just posted and my son was under 10 minutes!!!! (Don't want to post an exact time.). He unfortunately didn't train or anything because I totally forgot I put him in that and saw no need to "train" for a 400. (I was pregnant when I registered everyone.). But I am quite proud of him.

(Sidebar--I found it weird they chipped the mile but not the 5K. But he is excited to know his time since they had no clock for the kid races.)

Woohoo that is awesome!! Significantly faster than me lol

My younger daughter decided I needed to run with her and well...I had flip flops on. She beat me easily and likely would have even if I wore sneakers. He joked that I should run with him. Glad I said no. Lol.

For those reading for next year, the last time we did kid races was at Epcot in 2005. I like that they have it at WWOS. And for the mile, it was fairly easy to drop off a kid and then meet them at a couple of turns. Not quite all---but nice points for a little pick me up cheering boost from family. Thumbs up from our family.

I think this is about the fifth time I've posted this, but here goes.

QOTD: "There is only one person in this race, and that is me."

Dr. George Sheehan, cardiologist and running philosopher, talking about the most important thing he learned in his running life.

Had a blast running with my son in the 5k this morning. Logistics were a bit annoying, but the run through Epcot more than made up for it. Looking forward to Sunday!

I'm not there yet so I don't know if this is true, but I saw this posted on Twitter about "costume" crackdowns:

I have not read all the recent posts so sorry if someone else mentioned this, but I was on the 5k course by two firefighters in their gear, but with shorts. But hat and coat and oxygen tank thing. I don't know if the had to remove just the pants.

I did not see any metal detectors. I did see lots of costumes that dragged on the ground.

Although ... I did get pulled out to go through the metal detector at DHS.
Yes I thought they were very lenient on costumes. I saw a lot of great ones!

Dear goodness me those 10k shirts are SMALL! I switched up a size and it just fits me!!

Also wicked disappointed no 10k merch at the expo beside the car magnet and the I did it shirt... And not even in a good size for me.... But still excited to be here and love the pins more than the 2014 ToT ones!

Anybody go to the Expo today? How's merchandise looking? I don't land until tomorrow afternoon and I am worried I will miss out on my marathon merchandise!

The fire fighter being told she can't run in her gear is true. She's a member of the running group I am apart of. She says she runs in gear to bring awareness to the raised risk of cancer for the profession.

If you believe your costume does not break the rules then ask what rule you are breaking specifically? Technically it appears the giant Mickey bar did not break the rules as it did not encircle the body, have pointy edges, drag the ground, or have layers where things could be hidden. The firefighter was told it was due to "layers".

edit to add: I am on Jazz's side. She should have been allowed to wear her gear. She knew it may cause issues so went above and beyond and carried her ID as well to show she was a real fire fighter and not someone just dressed up as one.

My understanding is that she was told yesterday that she couldn't wear it and chose to wear it anyway. That is not going above and beyond. It just made a scene. I totally understand her cause, but I don't really like how she went about it. She could have worn her department shirt and the pants, she could have worn the helmet, etc. Since she is a member of public safety, she should have been the first one saying "I get it" and found another way to bring attention to her cause. Her friends campaigning on her behalf on Facebook is certainly not helping. I think it is the same group that was trying to get a letter writing/phone calling campaign to have her corral moved up. There are a ton of other people who have also gone through extensive background checks that still followed the guidelines. As a firefighter, I would expect her to step up and set the example. I am in awe of the firefighters who run in gear. It is really heavy and their work is incredibly difficult. However, this is a race where the race director has set specific costume guidelines. So, while I may be on her side about bringing awareness to her cause, there is no reason she couldn't have figured something else out.

That changes the story and I hadn't heard that part. If she had indeed been told at the expo that running in her gear was a no go then she should have respected that. I thought she was told no for the first time at the 5K this morning.

Nope. She was told yesterday. The posts are on the runDisney page on Facebook.

Note: I worked in public safety for almost 30 years, as has my spouse, so I am in no way anti-public safety. They have been and will always remain part of my family. :flower3:

But as it was said above there were other firefighters in gear. Only difference was shorts. If this is true she should have been allowed. RD needs to be absolutely clear and onsite to resolve disputes

My understanding was that other firefighters were not in full gear. That is why I said there were other ways to get across that she was a firefighter without wearing the full turnouts. If she wore the t-shirt, the pants and her helmet, we still would have known she was a firefighter. We still would champion her cause. We know she was specifically told that it was not allowed because she and her friends posted it. I absolutely agree that runDisney needs to be consistent for everyone. I am hoping that they will have it worked out by Star Wars. It is a LOT of people to screen.
