Marathon Weekend 2016

Happy new year everyone!

QOTD: Over the last few months we have all had put in a lot of miles leading up to marathon weekend. During your runs, tell us about something out of the ordinary that you witnessed or had happen to you.
One funny moment for me was actually at Disney back on our family trip in November. I was out for a midday run while the kids were swimming and on the path between Saratoga Springs and Old Key West one of the groundskeepers came up from behind me driving her maintenance cart. I took a look back and she called out "no problem, I can go around you", then pulled off the path to pass me. I yelled back at her "that sounds like a challenge" and sprinted away at top speed. I lasted maybe a quarter mile and had to slow back down, and when she caught back up she was laughing hysterically saying it was the best thing she had seen in a while...she challenged me to a rematch but I told her she was going to have to scrape me off the path and drive me home if I tried that again :)

Two weeks ago I was stopped by the sheriff a half mile into a 22 mile run. It was 5am, I'm wearing blinky lights & running attire. He flipped on his lights & pulled his car up on the sidewalk blocking me in between his car & a boundary wall. Spent the next 10 minutes quizzing me on why am I running at this time of morning & then threatened me with a summons because I was not carrying my drivers license. I wear a roadID bracelet that has more info than my license. I was p*ssed & had an angry few miles after that.

That's really strange. I didn't know that running without a license was a real offense.

I didn't know that either. I wonder if that is different with in each state. I have strobe lights facing all 4 directions. I also wear a road ID sports band with phone numbers and med info just incase. Next time I run by our local PD I will have to ask them.

So I've had a few extra people add their information and decided now would be a good time to post another edition of the Marathon Weekend Dis'ers list. I've also seen a few more screen names on here that I haven't seen lately so if you'd like to be added give me the following info. I will post the last version on Sunday evening.

Early Bird or Late Arriver?
Front Middle or Back of corral?

I would maybe call your police station and inquire about that. I do civil work, not criminal, but that is not striking me well at all. If they did that because they were looking for someone or had reports or something, probably nice to know that too at least.

I questioned the sheriff about why do I need my license while running on the sidewalk & he copped an attitude, I tried to take a pic of his badge but that didn't work. I shut my mouth immediately & said yes sir. I'm a 47 yo white woman with no priors running down a residential street that I live on. I'm googling running & what id I need or do not need. Actual forgot to do that after my run.

Another tidbit - dh was riding his bicycle and was hit by a car. The sheriff told him while he was in the ambulance that he needs to show his car insurance & registration. !!!! Wth! We ended up in court over that.

I live in Tampa Florida, 3 agencies patrol my 'rural' area - sheriff, highway patrol & city police.

Admit it...you were exceeding the speed limit, weren't you?

For all you weather stalkers, give weather underground a try:

I don't have anything nearly as good as some of the stories already told but a few weeks ago I was running along the Chattahoochee river (one of my go to spots to run after work) and there are a number of parks along the route I just happen to look over and this woman was doing some sort of weird dance/tai chi workout in one of them, I have no idea what she was listening to but she was having a great time and it made me smile. Also this isn't necessarily strange or anything but I love reading signs at races and at the Publix Atlanta Half there was a particularly raucous group of college age ladies stationed at mile 9 and they had a sign that said "Sure you've ran 9 miles but we've drank 9 mimosa's" (or something to that effect anyway) it certainly gave me a good laugh when I needed and powered me to the finish and a new PR at the time.

That's really strange. I didn't know that running without a license was a real offense.
I am now curious about this as I'm very bad and usually don't carry an ID with me although I do want to get a RoadID anyone know if they have a booth at the expo? and speaking of the expo can anyone confirm if we can use Disney Reward Dollars from the Disney Visa or Disney Gift Cards at the expo?

ATTQOD part duex

I was thinking about it more today on my run. On one of my legs during a 200 mile relay a cattle farmer had decided to drive his heard across the road. To keep the cows in line he had run wires across the road. As I approached he said " you can cross in between the cows just be careful as you duck under the wires as they are electric".

Nothing like a game of high stakes limbo and frogger mid run.

You can use all of the above but if you want to use your Disney Visa 10% discount you can only use rewards dollars and charge to the card (no gift cards). At least that's what they told me last time.

I really like the pink Mickey shirt and the I did It shirt. If I can grab those I'd wear them the following days in the parks. I have to be careful not to grab anything with the wrong race on it...so I hope they have cute generic weekend stuff available :)

QOTD:

I had a large man tackle a dog that went after me out of a person's front door. It was a small collie but at the time it seemed like a giant wolf. So that was frightening. It was an angry little thing.
I ran a little faster that day!

QOTD:
Probably the most out of ordinary thing I saw was during an early morning summer long run, as I was going through a local park I was lucky enough to see a possum, armadillo, racoon and squirrel within about a half mile of each other....I was like, awesome, critter friends.

Question about the New Balance shoes and specifically the virtual queue. How does that work? Do you register for the virtual queue and then pick the shoes up at the expo? I assume NB sends some sort of confirmation you can pick up a pair? Also, I see the queue opens on the 6th, so do I register the morning of the 6th even though I wont be hitting the expo until the 9th? Thanks in advance!

QOTD:

I think I will stay with the multi question answer format today, so here it goes.

1. What major accomplishment are you most pleased with achieving in 2015 as it pertains to running?
2. What are your running goals for 2016?

I have to do two in one because I forced myself to clean and organize all day yesterday. Awful.

1. Just running! I started running at the very end of 2014 and finished 3 half marathons and a handful of other races. I'm just proud I have stuck with it when I have never been a runner. Catching the RunDisney bug doesn't hurt either.
2. Finishing my first marathon hopefully next week! I also hope to do 1200 miles in 2016

I run in a neighborhood down the hill from me and sometimes it gets dark. There is a hill with a lot of little trees that line it and I always run like a mad person staring at it because in the dark it's hard to tell if these trees are all really trees or maybe a bear, completely ridiculous. One time I was so busy staring at the trees that a deer cut in front of me and missed me by about 2 feet. My heart raced so hard the rest of the way but I managed one of my fastest runs to date lol. I guess I need to keep an eye out for all wildlife and not just the fake bears I think I'm seeing.

We leave in less than a week!! I can't believe it.

NB queue: you register the morning of when you will be there. As soon as you register, you will get a time slot. You choose the shoe style and size you want and that reserves it for you. When your time comes up, you try on other shoes, either different styles and/or sizes.

I know it is stereotypical Canadian, but just the other day I saw a beaver...hadn't seen one in the wild since I was a kid. Nature is cool :)

QOTD:

I don't have anything exciting to share since I'm usually at the track. But when I started doing some long runs this summer, I decided to run on the strand at the beach. Nothing too outrageous, but in true southern California style, this one guy passed me on his skateboard and when he got in front of me, I noticed his Yorkie riding on the skateboard between the guys legs. It just struck me as so funny and cute, and then I'm like, wait, is that dog strapped down? LOL. Anyhow, California living for you I guess.

I like the grey and red long sleeve shirt and the jacket looks good. We'll see if any of it is left when I get there Friday. I am going down with money for this expo, as opposed to last as I was on a tight budget. Hopefully there is something worthy of taking my money.

Happy new year everyone!

ATTQOTD:
As usual, I have to answers that I want to share. The first was probably happened during the hardest 16 miler I ever ran. About a half mile into the run, two young college girls just leaving the bike rental area on campus come down the rode that leads to the running / biking path around the lakes. Well, apparently one of them forgot how to stop a bike. She went right through an intersection, over the curb and sidewalk, then down a 5 foot drop into the lake. Her friend could not stop laughing and I tried not to. I stopped and helped her out the lake and got her the bike.
The other story happened on early in training when running around the LSU lakes as well. A friend and I were putting in some miles when we start to catch up with a girl ahead of us. No big deal, but what caught our attention is this girl was running in one of those running skirts, again not something unusual. What was odd was it was very short and this girl decided to cut out the liner inside and wasn't running with anything under it. So with each stride she took, everyone got a full moon. It was hard not to laugh as we passed.

Hope to read some good storied from yall! Have a great day everyone!

Happy New Year to everyone as well. My running is pretty boring. As of late I have passed a lot of frozen, dead animals, on the side of the road. But I was running this morning before work. I had this little dog chasing my for about a 1/2 mile. I thought it was going to bite me he was so close.

Also, note to self. Time to start running around a college campus!!!

Good evening! I've enjoyed reading along with the QOTD and decided to chime in. I had an out of the ordinary event happen during a Saturday morning run recently. I typically run at a hospital down the road from me...not much traffic at all on the weekends. Anyhow, the roads have woods on either side. So I'm running along and this guy dressed in camo comes barreling out of the woods, carrying a rifle. He's in a full out sprint mind you...he runs down the road a bit, crosses the street and goes back into the woods on the other side of the road. I was starting to freak out a little when all of a sudden he comes plowing out of the woods on his four wheeler and drives off. An unauthorized deer hunter on private property! Took me by surprise for sure!

Good luck to you all at the races! We head down on Thursday from Louisiana...about 11 hours in the car for us. So incredibly excited!!! First marathon for me and I cannot wait!

Gel's:
I have to say that I really like the Clif Shot Chocolate and the Citrus one. Someone in the thread said the chocolate reminded them of fudge, I totally agree. It is the go to flavor if I am dragging a bit.

QOTD:
I have been thinking about this, I guess my runs are pretty boring - no issues with the police, no dog scares you to death moments, and, sadly, no scantily clad runners either! About the most interesting thing that has happened to me happened this past winter. I was running in the early morning, hit a ice patch slid for several feet doing the whole arms waving, one leg kicked up, water bottle flying out of my hands thing and then hit the ground pretty hard. I slid to a stop covered in snow, scuffed up, cracked phone, missing water bottle and then just layed there for a moment. I got up and cleaned myself up. I failed to find my water bottle and then eventually started running again. It was then that I saw this guy standing by his car looking at me. He just said "you biffed it" got in his car and drove off.

Four days to go!!!!

I do want to get a RoadID anyone know if they have a booth at the expo?

RoadID will not have a booth at the expo.

I needed to replace my sports bracelet since i apparently snagged mine on something. I talked to their customer service Wednesday and asked them if they would be at Disney so i could buy my new band there and not worry about shipping to me.

I have had a RoadID sports band for 3 years now and it is never off of my wrist.
