Marathon Weekend 2016

Not true, the optical HR monitors on the wrist can now be just as accurate as the chest strap. I tested mine out on multiple runs/rides using both the chest strap (Garmin 610) and the wrist optical HR monitor (Garmin 225), and the heart rate readings were identical throughout the activities. See one comparison below of a 20-mile bike ride where I wore both devices. Check out the DC Rainmaker website to learn more (he has the most thorough reviews).

That being said, I don't know if the Samsung Gear S HR monitor is any good, but as a general statement, the optical versions are now very accurate.

It's highly possible they are accurate now. I did my research about 2 years ago and things certainly change quickly in the world of technology.

Anyone have experience rehabbing hamstrings? I pulled mine a month ago and after a month of therapeutic massage and stretching and strengthening exercises I tried a 1/4 run/ walk yesterday and could only make it 3.5mi without discomfort. I'm starting to get worried about Marathon Weekend at this point.

I never had a hamstring injury but I agree that if you made it 3.5 miles that's a good sign. Depending on how long you have been resting your injury you might be sore getting back to running anyway. I would just not push yourself too much for the next 2 weeks or so and see how it goes.

Late to the game marathon question:

I am not registered for the full yet (I know it's at 99% & may sell out any minute - I have explored bib options with some TAs in case that happens). I've only been running about 18 months, and I'm still in the process of losing weight but I'm much stronger & more fit than I was 18 months ago. I'm determined that my first full will be at Disney. Although I haven't registered, I've been amping up training as though I am. However, I've yet to get to a 20 mile run-walk training session.

I've done 6 half marathons this year, including the Dumbo Double Dare (and I'll do the Infinity Gauntlet challenge in a couple of weeks). I run-walk, and while I have improved leaps and bounds over my couch potato fitness level 18 mos ago, I'm still a slow run-walker (average now is 13:30-14 min/mile in a half). I have a half next weekend on a fast & flat course, but if I had to register today, my POT would be a 3 hr half (from several months ago), which will put me in one of the last three corrals for this as my first full. (As an aside, I believe Disney will still accept a POT for a late registration at this point - last year I registered for the WDW half around Thanksgiving with a TA & my POT got me to corral I).

Aside from working out my budget, I guess what I'm looking for is whether it's still fun to run-walk the full if you're doing so (a) solo, & (b) at the back of the pack. I'm concerned most of the fun would be killed by worrying about being swept.

I'm sure it'd take me a solid 6 hrs to finish, and while I'm dying to do it, I'm questioning if I should just wait another year until
I'm more fit & can maybe get to longer run intervals to shorten my full marathon time a bit.

I have never run back there, but know a few who have and they say that it is a blast. Everyone talks and gets to know one another. One of my wife's friends has a friend that she now hangs out with who she met at the back of the half a few years ago. Turned out that they only live a few miles apart.

Go for it and have fun with it.

I leave the thread for a week and it explodes! Lots of good reading. I did my first long treadmill run yesterday (8 miles) - I was supposed to run a 10K race and then finish the long run on the treadmill but the race got cancelled due to flooding. The first hour was ok but after that I started to get disoriented and at one point felt like I was running backwards! Now I realize that I was low on fuel because I felt better after a Gu. I can't wait to get back outside and run!

For whoever was looking for breakfast recommendations - I had the most divine French Toast at Captain's Grille this summer. Highly recommended!

Is it fun to do a Disney Marathon Solo? I've did goofy solo this year and signed up to do the disneyland half solo too. While I love running with a group of friends I enjoy running Disney races solo too. You can definitely meet people in the corrals or course, but you can also meet people ahead of time. Look at this board and the mickey milers or other disney running groups to find people you might like to run with. I also usually stack the "find a friend to run with" deck by running with a pace group. That way I know I'm going to be with a large number of people that are about my same pace. I can't guarantee that it's going to be awesome, but if you want to meet people you'll definitely have the opportunity to.

Is it fun to do the race at the back of the pack? I don't have a lot of personal experience with this, but I know that the mickey milers do marathon group at about the 7 hour pace. Everyone that runs with them seems to really enjoy it. I have a friend that has run the marathon towards the back of the pack and she absolutely loves it. Most of the people I know that have run towards the back have really liked the race.

***Side note *** When asking should I do Disney race X in this forum the responses will overwhelming skew "Yes!"

I like all the detailed discussion on the watches. I'm a gadget girl for sure. I was contemplating picking up a FR 10 on ebay, they are not too badly priced. Anyone offhand know if the 10 has the lap feature? I don't really NEED another running gadget. I don't know that I'm really running enough to have that AND my Apple Watch, but did I mention I'm a gadget girl? :)

Did a "5k" fun run this weekend and it was fun as we got one of our friends to do his first 5k! Although it was technically less than a 5k, I think I would have beat my usual 5k time. I didn't use my headphones, so I wasn't really tracking my 1:1 intervals. I mostly went by my heart rate. The bad thing is, I have no idea how long that usually took. Oh well. It was fun though.

I'm hoping @LSUlakes is okay...I heard Baton Rouge was hit by 10 inches of rain.

We got a lot of rain! No actual flooding but it appears I have a leak in my roof :(. Discovered it around 9 last night at which point it was to late to really do anything about it other then remove the wet insulation and place a bucket where the water was coming from. Some areas did flood, but I am not sure how bad it really was/is. It isn't anywhere near the type of stuff South Carolina was dealing with a few weeks ago. Thanks for checking on me.

I totally cried at the finish line...

Thank you so much to everyone on here for answering my questions, wishing me luck and just being a great support on this journey so far.

@dancingtodisney YAY!!!! Congrats, so proud of you!!! :yay:

Thank you!! It's still a bit surreal! I really got so much info from your training posts and rundisney TR's so thanks again for sharing...

Congrats @dancingtodisney! I'm so proud of you! I knew you could do it and I can't wait to hear all about it!

Thanks Sarah! I'll be sure to get a Race Recap up in the next few days...

WA-HOO! Congrats! Such an emotional moment when you finally get to cross the finish line!

Oh wow I was so emotional, I think with around 6k to go I started getting teary every time I thought about the finish because I knew we'd get there one way or another.

When I crossed the line that was it I was sobbing... With happiness of course... :teeth:

My POT for Dopey was my best half marathon, which was right around the 3 hour mark. I'm definitely faster now, but other than Disneyland, I didn't really have another opportunity to improve my time before PoT submission. The race I planned to use for PoT was canceled due to rain, so I was kind of SOL. So, I'm working to be prepared to be in the back - and that it's going to take me forever, but that I'll be able to do it. You can run/walk with me!

For those of you who don't visit the news and rumors thread a big permit was filed today by Disney indicating major work for DHS will begin in January. The permit was for a large retention pond to be constructed but the maps in the permit also showed some of the other work that would be done like major road construction and parking expansions. No word on when exactly in January work would start but I would imagine ASAP.

Wow!! This is great! Very very excited for you!!! What a fantastic decision you have to make!! although I am hardly one of the running experts here, I like you, am someone who started running a couple of years ago to get more fit. I made the choice to do the marathon, in fact, I'm doing the Goofey! (Silly silly girl!)
I decided to do my first marathon at Disney, specifically because it is a supportive, gentle and forgiving running environment!
If you decide to do it, at your pace, you will not be the last person... And even if you are, people will still be there to cheer you on! You will still have completed 26.2 miles!! You will have done it at Disney!!
And you will get an awesome Disney medal!!
.... And I'm pretty sure you will have fun! Keep watching this board, I have no doubt that many people here will jump in and support you in your decision should you choose to do it. And if you decide not to, they will support you in that decision too.

There are really knowledgeable, funny , supportive runners on this board. If you decide to run, come back, ask questions, take advice, share your training, the ups and the downs. These folks are carrying me, they will carry you too!
We carry each other
:)
