Marathon Training Thread for 6/28-7/4

Grammy- YEAH FOR YOU!!! I'm so proud of yuo. I didn't want to do my extra time this morning either- but I though of you guys and I did it anyway. Funny how that works isn't it???

I'm sure glad we have each other!!! :grouphug:

HOpe you all are having a good week!! We're up against some challenges here. Just seems like one thing after another. My mom is having major health issues and we've got a cat scan scheduled for next week. That's the worst of all that is going on, but I'm afraid it will truly be something pretty major. Feel free to fling some extra prayers this way. Thanks!

BTW, I did make my ressies for Jan...looks like we're booked at POP from that Fri until Tuesday.

Karen, Ok...I did the extra 5. I had planned to walk 45 mins this AM...figured that would be approaching the 3 mile mark, but when I got back to the house it was only 43 mins, so I did another lap (now 55 mins) and then plus 5 brought me to 1:00:35. ::yes:: Without your challenge, I'd probably dropped off at the 43 minute mark, so thank you again for the motivation! I did skip yesterday, but I'm calling it my rest day. ;) Also, thank you again for posting your training schedule!

Grammy- I was thinking of youadn your 7PM rule last night. Glad your week is going well.

Yeah to everyone who has hit the trail this week!! Grammy, Karen, Cheryl, LAWalz, Katiebelle, Terry, ohMom, DoeWDW, MeMe,

Monica, I hope things are better with you. +*+*PD+*+*:wizard:

Welcome DoeWDW! 28 weeks left!! The countdown begins!!

MeMe, I really hope to get Lasik in 2005. That is one of my goals!! Let us know how it goes and take it easy!

Have a great day everyone!!

I have been sticking to plan pretty well this week. I ran a little over 5 miles yesterday, when you factor in that I added five minutes, to meet up with Karen's weekly challenge! Thanks for such a great idea! I actually ran 13 consecutive minutes towards the end of my workout. I don't know where the energy came from, but I decided to take advantage of it. It felt great!

You all amaze me every day with your stories.

I would love to hear more stories! So, I have a question for all of you...

WHAT LED YOU TO DECIDE TO RUN OR WALK A FULL OR HALF MARATHON?

Sometimes, I need to remember that question to keep me focused on my training and stay motivated. So, let's here it, ladies and gents! What was it for you?

Un beso y una sonrisa (I'm a little rusty on my Spanish, but that is meant to say "A kiss and a smile.")

Ashley:wave2:

Good Evening All! I managed to walked 3.5 miles today up from my regular 3.2. Thanks for the extra motivation, Karen! Tomorrow and Saturday I hope to do the same and then it is 5 miles on Sunday.

WHAT LED YOU TO DECIDE TO RUN OR WALK A FULL OR HALF MARATHON?
I decided that enough was enough and that I needed to drop all of this excess weight that I have carried for many years. I have gained and lost 50 or so lbs. more times than I care to remember or admit and I am tired of the excuses everytime the weight plus the extra 10 would creep on. I also know that any long term weight loss would have to include regular exercise and I always had a healthy dislike for regular exercise. (It is starting to grow on me know though as my friends have said it would if I stuck with it long enough) I love WDW and will use any excuse to go for a few days so I figured I would combine the two. Now for the interesting part, for a whole year I have been telling almost everyone I meet, including my Weight Watchers group that I was going to walk the 1/2 marathon at WDW in Jan 05. Because the more people I tell the less likely I will be to quit and not at least try because at least one person will call me on it. I also have a host of medical problems including high cholesterol, high BP, borderline Type II Diabetes and severe venous deficiency (the valves in my leg veins do not work properly). And you can add my dad have a quintuple heart bypass in late 2002 without any of the risk factors (DR. told him being of Eastern European decent was probably the cause) and my sister dying in 2000 at 43 of an embolism after surgery and the coroner's report saying her heart arteries were 50% blocked. Bottom line even though I don't have any kids, I am very close to my sisters 6.5 yo twins and wish to see them grow up and be healthy enough to enjoy it and not be a burden to anyone with all my helath problems.
Sorry this was so long.

I walked 1/2 mile yesterday and 2 miles today. One of my DDs had surgery today so I was too stressed out to stay on program. Even after reading a newspaper article that the Starbucks Frappacinos have over 400 calories, I still had to get one. I did not even go for the lite version that they are now offering. My DD is sleeping peacefully beside me now, but I am still sick with worry. At least she did not have to stay in the hospital.

Why am I doing the half marathon? My DH signed up to do the full marathon in January. He has wanted to do it for so long and now that the DDs are a little older, we decided now was a good time for him to try. When we looked at my oldest DD's school schedule, she would have to miss too many days to go in January. My parents agreed to watch the kids so that DH and I could go to DW by ourselves for a quick weekend getaway so that DH could run the marathon. I read on the WISH board that a group was going to walk the half marathon, and I thought "That would be fun!" Of course, that was before I realized that I could only walk a mile in 24 minutes. LOL! In just a few short weeks, I have been able to shave 3 minutes off my time. I had gestational diabetes with all 3 of my pregnancies, and my mom has diabetes. I know that I have to exercise and eat right to avoid developing diabetes in the future (or at least delay the onset). My DH is so supportive, and his marathon training is going well. It is fun to be able to share this common goal of completing the half marathon/marathon together.

Everyone on this board has inspired me to walk and stay committed to a healthy lifestyle. Thank you for that. My DDs now look forward to our evening walks and like to chant "Go Faster! Go Faster!" Of course they are not the ones pushing 60 pounds in a double stroller! LOL. Have a great Thursday everyone! princess:

Well, I'm back. So much for the committment I made earlier in the week. I've been stuck inside this beautiful week with a child with "tummy troubles". Every time we headed out in the sunshine, an accident would occur and back inside we would go. Can you tell I've been feeling sorry for myself?::yes:: Now, hmmm, what do I do when I'm depressed...EAT! I think I ate every single thing that isn't OP (some of them twice):drinking1 :mickeybar

Somehow, through all my poor choices, I've managed to maintain my weight loss.:confused3 . I haven't lost any more, but I haven't gained.

Last night I only got about four hours sleep. This morning when DS woke up as 5:50, instead of DH taking him back to his bed or in the living room he told him he could get in bed with us:crowded: . I was not pleased, and needless to say I didn't get back to sleep. I was a little peeved at DH, DS, and basicly the world. So, what did I do? I put my sweats and sneakers on and went outside for a 45 minute walk! So, today I'm going to recommit to exercise and healthy eating and generally being good to myself (can't go back, can only go forward). BTW, I love my family with all my heart, and I love taking care of them...sometimes I'm a bit of a whiner.

As for the question of why I'm doing the half-marathon...
This past Christmas I reached an all-tiime high of 267 pounds. I didn't even realize how big I'd gotten until I saw a picture of myself. I was not happy.I made a committment to myself to lose the weight and get in shape. I was lurking on the DIS when I found this board and found out about the marathon. Everyone was so positive and inspiring! I decided that I would give myself the reward of a trip to WDW if I got in shape and trained to walk the half. I feel as though if I can accomplish this I can accomplish anything...including staying healthy for life. It's an added incentive to be able to meet all you wonderful people. I'm telling myself that I can't go to WDW unless I'm ready for the half (I'll probably come anyway...just have to push myself sometimes).

Well, it's time to either fish or cut bait. If I don't start getting serious about this goal, I'll never be ready in time. No more excuses...I'm going to do this!

Good morning everyone!! Happy July!!

I started out my July with a 30 minute walk this morning. I got a late start and it was getting too hot by 6:30, so I came home. I'll walk my longer walk tomorrow and then my big walk on Sunday.

Why am I walking the half? It was a way to force myself into the "active" goals for myself for the long run. And if I have the carrot of going to WDW, that's all the better!! I started walking regularly last May (2003) and this is just a way of rewarding myself for sticking with it and pushing it farther. I'm worth it! ::yes:: What started asa journey to get my weight under control has really mushroomed into so many areas of my life.

tw1nsmom, good for you for harnessing that frustration and lacing up your shoes! Way to go.

Katiebelle, I hope your DD is doing Ok today. Nice that your Jan trip will be for the 2 of you!! I know on the rare occasion that we get "time off" we are better when we get back!!

Grammy- your surprise has me really excited!! Thank you for thinking of us all!

LAWalz- GREAT mileage!! You will have an awesome week! Thank you for sharing the story of your sister and your motivation. I know she would be so happy that you are taking these steps to be around for her twins. I like your attitude about telling everyone.

Ashley, thanks for asking the question. I'm enjoying reading the replies!

Have a great day everyone!! Let's get July started right!! Just think!! We're exactly 6 months until January 1, and then we'll be counting in days and hours!!

Hi everyone

I got in an extra 10 minutes last night by doing a 70 min walk instead of my normal 60 . Thanks again Karen for the motivation! Tonight I hope to get in at least 35 min. Tomorrow is my long busy day at work so it will probably be a rest day and I'm still trying to figure out if I should do my long walk on Sat. or Sun. I might just wait and see what the weather forecast is. I am going to try and walk fo 2 hours for my long walk this weekend!

MeMe How are your eyes "adjusting" to not needing glasses? Isn't it wonderful! I had LASIK done 5 years (wow it's hard to believ it was that long ago already!) and it was the best thing I ever could have done! It is so nice to be able to see the alarm clock without having to get right on top of it! I hope all is going well for you!

Monica Sending you some more PD :wizard: and hoping that things are going better for you!

Terry Great job getting down you blood pressure and blood sugar! How did the %K race go on Sunday?

Beth Sending prayers and PD :wizard: your way that things improve for your mom and that the CAT scan goes well! I'm glad you got your ressies for Jan.! Have you stayed at Pop C yet? We stayed there in Dec., a few days after it opened and we loved it!

Ashley Great job running the 13 consecutive minutes at the end of a long run!

Karen and LAWalz Great job on walking those extra minutes! I wonder how many extra minutes total Karen has inspired all of us to walk this week.

Grammy Thanks for the inspiration to eat better! Yesterday was a hard day but I managed to pretty much stay on track and today I did much better but I have been hungry all day. It's just 1 of those hungry kind of days but I'm getting through it without blowing it! Great job on all the exercise! Wow an extra mile on the TM and yoga both!

Katie Sending prayers and PD :wizard: for your DD. I hope she is doing well and heals quickly! Please keep us informed on how she is doing. Don't be to hard on yourself about the Starbucks, you needed it today and tomorrow is another new day.

tw1nsmom I hope DD is feeling better! Great job on getting rid of your frustration with your family by getting out there for a walk!
Great job maintaining your weight too!

ohMom How are the new ortoditics? Are you adjusting?

Why am I walking the 1/2? Great question Ashley! I knew for years that there was a full marathon at WDW and always thought it would be so neat to do it, but there was 1 problem, I'm not a runner. Last year I read on this board about the WISH Walkers walking the 1/2 marathon at WDW and thought it would be neat to join them and that that would keep me motivated to being healthier and exercising consistently. I am now so glad I signed up (and a bit nervous about it too). It has kept me exercising consistently and I have "met" the most wonderful, inspiring group of people, the WISH walkers here on these threads :grouphug: I can't wait to actually meet all of you in person and accomplish this goal with you! Oh yeah and I actually do run a little now too, so I guess I'm turning into a runner now too!

So Ashley Why are YOU doing the 1/2 marathon???

Have a good Friday everyone :sunny:

Cheryl

Hi all! i managed 4 miles today then noticed a small blister like sore on my leg that is chronically swollen and red so I called the vascuar dr. I managed to get in tonight and he told me that the cellulitis infection was acting up and I would NEVER get rid of it completely or see the redness fade (because that will never completely go away either) unless I start to wrap my legs in ace bandages until the sweling goes down then wear comprehesion stockings for the rest of my life. And I have to wear them from the minute i get up until the minute I go to sleep. The kicker is, he told me exercising without my legs being wrapped or in stockings was actually doing me more harm than good. Thank goodness I did not get out of his office until almost 9pm so I have not had the chance to overeat. I am determined to walk tomorrow though so I will look like a mummy until I get to the Sporting Goods store and buy some time of leggings to cover my entire legs, just what I need in the middle of the summer! I am kind of upset and depressed but I guess I will have to do this for the same reasons I am doing the 1/2 marathon. Anyway thanks for listening to my ranting.

Beth- I am praying for your mom. I hope everything is okay.

Katiebelle- I will pray for your daughter to get well soon too! It is very stressful when a child is sick. Don't be too hard on yourself!

tw1nsmom- Hope your child is getting better. Going out for a walk this morning was a great choice!

Cheryl- Walking ten extra minutes was great! And good luck on your planned 2 hr walk this weekend.

My DD is doing well today. Thank you for all of the PD and prayers. She enjoys the fresh air so we took another 2 mile walk tonight. I was so excited because I did it in 39 minutes, which is 2 minutes faster than Sunday. I know that I still have a long way to go, but you guys keep me motivated to keep going.

Katiebelle- HOORAY FOR YOU GIRLY!!! You knocked 2 minutes off your time. I'm so happy to hear your DD is feeling well enough to get out for a walk with mom. :p

LAWALZ- You were really lucky to get into the Dr. tonight weren't you! I'll tell you what- you need not worry about what's on yotr legs we'll do somethign to make them stylin' for you! I'm glad you're lidtening to him though- that's a GOOD THING!

Cheryl- I'm so proud of all your time today! You went the EXTRA, EXTRA MILE!!! We should total the extar time walked on Sunday to see just how much extra we did!

Beth - I marvel that you get out everyday! If I lived in Florida in the summer, I'd sit on my sofa all day long with the AC turned down to 68 and a fan blowing on me. I wouldn't move a stich!! I'm ver proud of you for getting out in that heat. For sure- that's one thing I just couldn't do.

Tw1nsmom- I feel so bad for you! Sometimes it is so miserbale having sick little kiddles (anyone remember those little dolls- I use to ahve the little fireman guy- and I pretended he was a real kid.... this is sooooo sad!) I hope that health enters your household soon and that all will get back to normal! In the meantime, just keep reading andposting your thoughts- it'll help get you out of the house! ;)

Ashley- way to keep at it girl. How are things going with the kids? Everything still on track? Any news on prices for those t-shirts?

Grammy- I LOVE MAIL!!!!! THANKS!

Well- I haven't been on the TM yet- I only hjvae 1 mile to walk (plus 5 mins!) so i'm gonna go do it now.Have a great night everybody!

I have gotten a little behind on reading everyone's progress this week but there seems to be an atmosphere of pumped up and I like it!

I'm going to hit the pavement here this morning and walk my DD a mile or two to test out the new orthotics this way. I have survived my week so far but I still really "feel" them in my shoes. I did a 3 mile WATP yesterday and was mindful of them the whole time. I spent the afternoon with evansmom and we talked about shoes, etc (she has run marathons and had ankle problems in the past) and she's wondering if I shouldn't run the distance of the half with my orthotics in? i'm not sure now. I'm just going to start and give it a shot I guess.

I did slip of my Fast track WW for a dinner out last night. I'm convicing myself that i'm back on track ALL DAY today - this is a 4 day weekend for my DH and he makes it seem so not a big deal to eat whatever:rolleyes:

have a great walk/run today and this weekend all!!!

It is so inspiring reading all these posts!

I did my longer workout today. 4.2 miles. I jogged half of that so that was good, but my time was down to 15 minute miles. Of course I stopped to fix my shoes (Foot fell asleep!) and had to stop a few times to strech my calves. The rest of my legs are holding up well, but my calves don't like this training.

Have a great 4th everyone!

Happy Friday! I mamaged to walk 3.2 out of a planned 4 today. Between the humidity and the leg wraps I felt like I did twice as much. Tomorrow is a light day, probably 2 miles, then I go for 5 on Sunday.

Karebear1- Thanks for the encouragement!

Katiebelle- glad to hear your DD is feeling better!

ohMom- I hope your walk went well today. I know what you mean about people feeling it is a holiday weekend so eat whatever. That is when I usually get into trouble because I have a hard time stopping.

CarolA.- My goal is 15 minute miles, so I think you did great.

Happy 4th!!:bounce:

while my DH is showering - he had the day off and has been "busy" he said - so we are going to just R & R but I needed to stop by first :p

Doing good on the WW fast track but just went over 3 pts for the day - but I was hungry - wasn't bad stuff just needed "some substantial carb" so we had WW friendly reuben sandwich still 7 pts (but that was dinner) along with some fresh dark cherries - food is over for the day!

I tm'd 4 miles this AM and my extra for the day was my last 1/2 mile - I really concentrated on my posture, pulling in the gut - and walking with intention! Wow - let me tell you - I have been feeling some muscle reaction in my back all day from that! (I have been reading lately how posture does effect the workout results) Also, ended with some stretching - Curves has me convinced that stretching IS really important!!

Okay - DH done - time for our "texttwist" computer game :teeth:

Have a good holiday weekend everyone - more from me tomorrow! I am planning on at least my regular 8 mile walk.

Great job everyone - you are keeping me inspired!!

I walked 2 miles again tonight with my youngest DD. We were able to do it in 37 minutes! I shaved another 2 and 1/2 minutes off my time tonight! Thanks for the motivation. I will try to get in some longer walks this weekend.

a 10 mile walk this AM. :teeth:

I really had hopes of going that far today - now that it is over sure glad that I did it! No, it really wasn't too bad - I was a tad warm (make that "hot") in the sun but I was in a path in a park so I had access to water - so that was good. I'm recovered now - so time to move on with the day!

Once again, I state - "if I can do it - YOU can do it"! Hang in there fellow WISHwalkers/runners we can do it. ::yes::

PARTY TIME GRAMMY!!!!!!!!!! WOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

I'm so proud of you for setting that goal and accomplishing it! YOU REALLY WENT THE EXTRA MILE!!! It's so exciting to see eerybody push themselves a little further this week. And it's so much more fun to push yourself when you have other people pushing themselves!

Speaking of pushing yourself........ guess what I did today???

I actually jogged some !!!

Ok- I know it's not that big of a deal- for the first 20 minutes of my 3 mile walk today I jogged 10 second out of each minute. Now- I didn't do this for the full 20 minutes. I did it for a total of about 10 minutes. So I jogged for 10 seconds for 10 minutes= 100 seconds of jogging or 1 minute 40 seconds of jogging. OK-don't laulgh at me- but this is TRULEY A MIRACLE for me to do this! I really have been afraid of trying to jog/run because of my back and my knees and my heart etc. (I know- I sound like a hypocondriac- but when you haven't done these things in well over 20 years- you get to become a real weenie!) And while it's just a small amount of time- it is a giant hurdle for me to have passed through. I'm very excited and proud of myself. I really can't go anywhere but up from here can I?

Well- anyway- I managed to cut some time off my 3 miles- and did my 3.25 miles (did the extra 5 minutes) in 64:44. I feel very good- didn't get tired at all during the walk! Tomorrow I'm supposed to do 5 miles. 2 of those miles is going to be walking down to the town park and back to watch the 4th of July fireworks- I'll have to figure out the other 3 later.

HAVE A GREAT 4th EVERYONE- and please remember how blessed we really are to live in the country we do! Just say a little Thank You to the Big Guy in the sky!

Just wanted to check in and say hi. You guys are all doing great!! I've had a challenging week but am planning to get out and do my long walk tomorrow.

Everyone have a safe and happy 4th!!
~~Beth
