Mall bans unsupervised kids/teens

Wait - I have capitulated several times that this is legal, but that I still consider it to be wrong. You guys even responded to those posts, so I know that you didn't miss them. Yet you still harp on the initial post, with no consideration to subsequent posts.

I have heard of several cases in which a similar rule was tested and the rule removed. Was that because of pressure? Who knows? I really don't care. All that matters to me is that the rules were removed after a legal test.

You know, if all that matters is the rule of law, you should consider some of your private habits. I am willing to bet that you break the law with fair regularity, as there are many absurd laws still on the books from over a century ago...

They do this at the Mall of America. There is another mall nearby (in Burnsville, MN) that doesn't and you can definitely tell the difference!

We went to the Burnsville Mall one Sat. night and there were teens everywhere...the following Friday we were at Mall of America and it was so quiet and peaceful (and dead..lol)...!!! I have no issue with it!

Ok, lets throw one more wrinkle into this debate, BamaFan, where is the line between a teen being able to be at a mall and causing a ruckus and me being at the mall wanting to enjoy a peaceful time at the mall? Why would the rights of these teens supersede MY rights????

You don't have a right to a peaceful time anywhere. I am willing to bet that you deal with much worse on you average summer day at WDW. The difference is your attitude, not theirs...

But you are claiming it is their right to be able to go to the mall. And, since you brought it up, yes, I do have the "unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" so wild teens running around the mall does NOT make me happy.

Okay--I'm apologizing in advance for a long rambling post. I'll break it down my bullet points.

• I started working in the mall at 16, trust me they knew when I was out on a meal break at 5:30 on a Saturday night. The kids that are working are look like they are working.
• I spent several years closing the store on Friday and Saturday nights. You can tell the difference between kids taking a break from shopping and those loitering. The loitering ones do not have shopping bags.
• I walked into work last Monday morning. Only to hear from a co-worker that the cops and an ambulance had been called the afternoon before to break up the kids who had destroyed the bedding department at the Ikea at the other end of the mall.
• I've seen plenty of kids busted for shoplifting. We had a security director who had teenagers of his own. He always offered to call the parents first. There were kids who would've been happier being picked up by the cops.
• Perhaps the most infamous incident in my sales days was the time that we had 5 teenage boys running through the store squirting ketchup packets. Guess what had to be cleaned, and every escalator ceiling had to be repainted.
• There are kids who are good kids that are going to come in shopping and be well behaved.
• There are kids who are going to cause problems. They ruin it for everyone.
• Mall security staffs do the same thing about as Disney security doing the bag checks. It's there for show.

Okay, I'm getting off my soapbox. Yeah it sucks for the good kids. But the malls are in business to make money. And if shoppers are going to be turned away by misbehaving kids, it's not going to happen. AND MALLS ARE PRIVATE PROPERTY, they can set their own rules.

Well, something has certainly got to be done. I'm not "old" but I certainly don't like to visit my local mall due to the activity of the teens who congregate there. It's scary! Had a shooting there last year with one person killed. Old people dining at the Piccadilly Cafeteria got to witness the whole thing while eating their apple pie. As far as the constitution goes - maybe it needs to be revised for the safety of people in public places.

I immediately thought of the Mall of America when I read the title of this, wondering if it was an old resuscitated thread.

I believe that the Mall of America started this in the late 90's or very early in the 2000's, and they seem to be doing fine.

Read that again - the pursuit of happiness - not happiness itself. Happiness comes from within. If a few teens running around in the mall wrecks that for you, it has already eluded you.

And stop bringing up their "rights". That has been capitulated. Or maybe you just like to pretend that it wasn't so you can feel better because you aren't happy?

No one is allowed to cause a ruckus regardless of age. Some of the examples of "troublemakeing teens", I've read in the thread seem like very clear cut examples of loitering, it shouldn't have been tolerated the first time.

I remember a mall in the states doing this when I was about 12, so I did a school project on it

While I was there interviewing store owners a group of adults started a food fight in the food court . The store owners I interviewed were all more concerned about adult orgainized "shoplifting gangs" that came in to the store to steal small high dollar items, and they all doubted that very much of the loss in there store was caused by regular teens.

I can't believe how bad some of your guys' malls are! There are no teen bans at our mall. As a matter of fact, we were at the mall today and there were a ton of teens. We had snow day here in Florida. The kids are well behaved in the mall here. It doesn't matter what age you are, if you are just standing around blocking the walkways, security will tell you to move on. Security is very visible in our mall and they are actually doing something. We also always have police officers at the mall on the weekends so there is nothing happening. The adults get on my nerves at the mall more than the teens.

The kids would have been able to be at the Mall of America today too. The curfew is for after 6pm on weekend nights, really only 'banning' them for about 3 hours on Friday and Saturday nights.

I opened a children's boutique at the local mall. No school days and anytime after 4:00 are horrible. Kids screaming, running and trying to skate board. It is annoying and ruins the atmosphere for the regular shoppers.

I haven't been here very long, but I can imagine that the summer months are the same.

Sorry, I wasn't saying I am against the ban/restricted access. If that is what the local mall needs to do, well it is probably the local teens fault. I just can't believe the behaviors some posters have posted happening. When I was a teen, a couple parents noticed that there was nothing for the local teens to do. We didn't have a mall that was less than 45 mins away. So they started a teen club. There were rules. It went great for about 6 months. Then the bad kids started coming around. Suddenly there were knives and guns at our hangout. They wouldn't listen to the rules and the cops were having to be called. The liability became too much and they shut down. Totally sucked for those of us that followed the rules but is understandable. We were at our mall a few years ago. Boyfriend saw his students, all adults. He teaches for the Navy. Anyway, we stopped to talk to them and invite them to a cookout and we were all told to move on or be kicked out. I am over 30, all the "kids" were over 21 and were sailors. Didn't make difference to security. There is no loitering in the walkways. They do have nice comfy couches to hang out in though.
