Make sure your doors are locked!

WHHHHHHAAAAAAATTTTTTTT wow that's customer service

Truthfully, that sounds like fair customer service to me. Disney provided you with compensation for something with they were not obligated to do, and action was taken, even though you did not hear of it, something else they are not obligated to do, especially considering that your room was undisturbed. What would you have said, anyway, had housekeeping contacted you five minutes later?

On a related note, as we were leaving our room the other day, a hotel employee walked by and said, "Make sure your door closes," with a smile, while helping our door to latch completely. I'm sure it's a common enough occurrence that the mechanism that pulls your door shut doesn't quite fully do the job. From that point on, we waited the extra couple of seconds every time we left to make sure the door latched.

We just got back at the end of Oct and I reported that our door did not close correctly at POP. We didn't find this out until our last morning there. My son was able to just push open the door and we tried everything to get it to latch and it just wasn't lining up correctly. Thankfully we were on our way out, but it is scary to think we stayed 3 nights there with the door unlocked.
I did report this on the way out.

The thing is, the more you do something, the more you do it without thinking. I would think checking that the door was closed and locked would become automatic.

And even if they do make a mistake and forget to lock a door, it should not happen so often or be so common place that telling a guest to write a note every day about locking the door should be the fix. Saying that to a guest shows that it happens quite a bit. And that is unacceptable.

I lock up my stuff, and I still think housekeeping needs to be sure the room is locked up before they leave.

Mistakes can and do happen. It is the attitude of the resort that is what I find so unacceptable. You should never be told you have to leave a note in order for your room to be locked up by housekeeping. That just shouldn't happen.

Now, I do agree with that! No one should have to leave a "note."

Put anything of value in the safe, problem solved.

If you lock your stuff in the safe, there is nothing to be concerned about.

That'd be true if only the safes at WDW resorts were big enough, but they're not. Even my tiny netbook doesn't fit in there! We put our cash, passports and whichever credit card we're not taking with us that day in the safe, and it's about full after that.

We've never had an issue with our door not being closed properly which is a good thing, because a thief would have definitely been happy if he'd been able to get in our room.
I agree with others who have said that it's not up to the guest to remind housekeeping staff to close the door.

:thumbsup2

I also saw at least one person saying that they request no housekeeping service for the duration of their stay because they don't want strangers in their room.

You may want to keep in mind that most hotel companies have policies that if you are staying more than around 3-4 days, that housekeeping *must* enter your room to check on things. In other words, even if you think no one has been in your room it's almost certain that staff members have taken a glance around when you're not there.

wdw will NOT enter your room if you have a sign out....unless a REAL emerg. It is against their housekeeping policy......even after 3 or 4 days.We NEVER use housekeeping at wdw and we norm stay a week or more.

Wow, after reading all this I'm glad that checking my door behind me is second nature... I do it at home too. I'm hearing POP in this thread far more than the other resorts though and was already tempted to go mod... hmm... excuses! :thumbsup2

Everyone makes mistakes. Roll with it.
Forget about "stuff." What about personal safety? Disney is magical, but it is not immune from people that want to harm others. Should we "roll" with the chance that since the door did not close or was not closed that someone is possibly waiting in the room to rob or do worse to us? I know mistakes happen, but seriously telling people to leave a note to remind housekeeping we don't want to be robbed, raped or mugged is ridiculous. I can't "roll" with that. Enough people here have said they had similar door problems, and CM's know it's such a problem that they have told people "make sure your door locks." Don't you think opportunists hoping to do harm know of the issue as well?

This is very correct. I found this out first hand.

During our stay at the WL this past August, I came back to our room in the afternoon and took a nap while the kids and my dw went to the pool. We were staying concierge, so I put up the "do not disturb" sign. I forgot about it when we left around 5:00 pm for dinner and decided to leave it up when we got back until we left in the mid morning.

The next morning I get a knock on our door at 6:30 AM checking on us. Their response was "hotel policy." I reminded him for freaking sakes, you made our room yesterday morning and you could have waited until later this morning. I chose not to want turn-down service that previous day. This was not even a full day.

I should not have been bothered this early in the morning. I have never in 25 years of travel ever had this happen anywhere, including my previous stay at WL and my stay at the YC. I guess it was more upsetting because we were out until 2:00 am for EMH at the MK. :headache:

As for the posts about the door being left open; sorry for those who are sympathetic towards housekeeping who make this error: Sorry, it should always, and I mean always be part of the routine to check the door as you walk out. No mulligan or my bad acceptable with me on that one.

Sorry, meant to respond to this with my above post.

I found this personally from experience to be not true. We only had a sign out and missed a turn-down service in concierge and still had someone from concierge banging on our door at 6:30 am the next morning. My above post will explain our experience.

not true. they knocked on our door. after we didn't answer for a bit,(didn't think we needed to, had the "DO NOT DISTURB" sign on,we didn't want to be disturbed;)) they came in.

a few times, I have been sleeping and Dh left to go to the DSA. left the room slightly open (with the metal door lock) so he could get back in easily without disturbing me.... themaid knocked (even tho the DO NOT DISTURB sign was on the knob).. I was sleeping, so she just walked in and said "housekeeping!" I leapt up, startled, and gave her quite a show!

I have NO idea why DO NOT DISTURB doesn't mean that you don't want to be disturbed!?:confused3

I don't want to be disturbed to TELL you that, or to sign anything.

if I want maid service, I will leave the sign OFF the door. If i forget and leave it on, it's my own fault. they'll leave a "bag o goodies" on the door knob.

I agree. I was just thinking that it's not the loss of stuff that's so troubling but the possibility of someone being in the room when the door is left open by a careless housekeeper. Crime happens in hotels, yes even at Disney, and I would find it a bit spooky to enter a room with an open door late at night.

Interesting!!!! This happened to US at POP ALSO!!!

Except mouse keeping left the silver door lock thing in the door.. left it ajar and open like that ALLL DAYY long and POP and its managers did not do a single thing about it.

They were not concerned at all. Because nothing looked out of place or missing!

Aside from my outrage that the Front Desk would think it was a guest's responsibility to post a note to "whomever" was in the room for "whatever" reason, I am more concerned about who might be waiting on the other side for me or one of my kids to enter. Just because it's Disney, doesn't mean that there aren't any potential violent criminals lurking. That would concern me way, way more than theft. :sad2:

The most important part of the housekeepers routine should be to confirm the door is locked when he/she is finished with a room. Leaving the door open leaves the guests belongings at risk, and also allows any wackadoo to enter the room and wait for their return. Attacks at hotels/motels do happen, doesn't anyone watch 20/20 or Dateline? They did a show on this a while back, and I've been much more careful ever since.

There is NO excuse for leaving the door open, I'm sorry. I'm busy at my job also but wouldn't get away with making a major mistake like that with no consequences. It is obviously not treated seriously by Disney, I'm quite surprised. I also wouldn't enter until a security guard came and checked the room.

Anyone can wander around any Disney resort. You do not have to be a guest. You can also be a guest that is of questionable character and take advantage of an easy opportunity by noticing the door is left open.

I rarely send a letter of complaint but that is something I would notify them of.

My mother worked for Housekeeping at a few hotels in Waikiki for decades before retiring, and it was part of their routine and (I believe) a requirement for them to check that the door is locked when finished cleaning a room. Yes, people are human and will make mistakes. However, this is a major error that the hotel security and management should take seriously.

Personally, I always check doors, whether at home or at a hotel, to make sure it is locked. I do this automatically. I guess it was something that I was taught by my mother.

Not sure how others leave their rooms, but I am a very neat person. The trip when my door was propped open at CBR I was traveling solo. I seldom ever have anything to put in the trashcans in the room, am not a wriggler and have a tendency to sleep on the very edge of a bed, so have only 1/2 of one bed to make up. I keep everything lined up neatly on the vanity with most toiletries hanging up in my toiletry bag in the closet. In addition I always roll up my towel and washcloth every morning in the bath mat and place them in the sink with the mousekeeping evelope sitting on top, so they're easily seen. The only thing the housekeeper has to do in my room is replace a towel, washcloth, and bathmat and make 1/2 of one bed. There was no reason to prop that door open with a trash can. She should have been out of there in 3-5 minutes.:confused3

no offense, but next time your at Disney, let it go....wriggle a little :goodvibes:thumbsup2

:rotfl::rotfl:No offense taken!

Not necessarily an accident. A few years ago at CBR. I was traveling solo that trip and when I got back to my room that night I saw my door propped open with a trash can. Those doors usually lock automatically when they're closed, but this door was literally propped open. I almost freaked and was afraid to go in, so went back downstairs and called them on my cell phone. Finally the CM at the call center put me in touch with CBR security. A security guy finally showed up and went in with me, but sortof just blew it off, saying housekeeping frequently has several rooms open at a time and they apparently just forgot to go back and finish my room. Nothing was missing, but it was still scary at the time.:scared1: I called housekeeping the next morning and was simply told that someone would speak to the housekeeper about it. I didn't hear anything else about it.
I'm with Rusty. Why does everyone assume that the world (and WDW) is full of crooks lurking and waiting for opportunities to steal? :confused3 I travel quite often and have never had any problems with someone stealing from my room.

If you read my first post you will see I wasn't that concerned about my stuff. My discomfort was based on the fact that I was a female traveling alone and came back to my room late at night to find my door propped open with a trash can. The light was on in the bathroom and I didn't know if anyone might still be inside that room. I did not panic, I simply called for security to go in with me, to check it out. Sorry, no way was I walking in that open room by myself that late at night. There was no reason for that housekeeper to prop that door open like she did. All she had to do in there was make 1/2 bed, replace a towel, washcloth, and bath mat, and take the rolled up towel, washcloth, and mat out of the sink. There was nothing else for her to do in that room and she should have been out of there in less than five minutes. Any valuables I had was locked up in the safe. The only things out was a few toiletries and my clothes. I wasn't worried about them. It was a matter of personal safety. My beef was that security was so unconcerned and acted like it was a common occurrence for housekeeping to leave the doors open. I notice that everyone else has said it was the latch not catching that kept their doors from locking. In my case a housekeeper intentionally placed a trash can in the doorway, to keep the door from closing. To get back into that room she would have had to reach down and move that trashcan out of her way.

If some of you remember, there was a thread several years ago here on the DIS about thieves breaking into the rooms at Old Key West and breaking into the safes themselves. Honestly when I saw my door propped open that night, that was my first thought that thieves had done it, not housekeeping. It was security who said that housekeeping frequently leaves several rooms open while they're cleaning and my housekeeper apparently forgot to go back and close the door. It was his nonchalant attitude that concerned me.

wdw will NOT enter your room if you have a sign out....unless a REAL emerg. It is against their housekeeping policy......even after 3 or 4 days.We NEVER use housekeeping at wdw and we norm stay a week or more.

Definitely not true. Oct 2009 I got sick with a pretty bad respiratory infection (achy with fever, chills, sore throat, etc), the day after I arrived at CSR. I spent most of that trip in bed with the Do Not Disturb sign on my door. Several times the housekeeper knocked on the door and twice she opened the door and walked in on me (different housekeeper both times). One afternoon the head of housekeeping called me and asked if everthing was OK. She said they had noticed that I was keeping the Do Not Disturb sign up and wanted to know if I was OK. When I told her I was sick and just didn't want to be disturbed she was really very, very sweet. She asked me if there was anything she could do, if I had been eating, and could she at least bring me something to eat and drink and if I needed any medicine. I told her appreciated it, but was fine She then told me that if there was anything they could do to help, to not hesitate to call them. She called again the next day to check on me and when I told her I was feeling better, she asked if I was going to be in my room for a few minutes. I told her I was and a few minutes later there was a knock at my door. She was standing with there with two bags in her hands. In one she had a very intricate large clown towel animal and in the other she had three Sprites, three bottles of juice, a couple of apples, three oranges, a little tub of cheese, some crackers, and a rice crispy Mickey. She wouldn't even take a tip and said she just wanted to make sure I was OK and to be sure and call if I needed anything.

Also not at WDW, but when I was at RPR over at Universal this past August 29th-Sept 4th I had the Do Not Disturb sign on my door several days. Twice when I returned from the parks, there were packages delivered from the parks. Both times the bags were sitting on my bed. The Do Not Disturb sign was still in place in the door.

I have never once had this happen.....we stay AKL CL all the time and nope no one has ever bothered us...the one time someone DID come in our room at the poly with the sign up the resort gen mang called me and gave us 4 nights refund on our poly room and wold not take no for a answer.

I am amazed that people are okay with this. "Just don't accept housekeeping and take care of the room yourself." How many other places would we allow this other than disney???? Would we say: no big deal, I'll clean up myself at any other chain hotel?

And I agree with previous posters. This is a safety issue. It should be standard operating procedure at ANY hotel. NO GUEST should EVER have to leave housekeeping a note to remind them to DO THEIR JOB PROPERLY! Good grief!

I have read many times on these boards that this happens so it isn't just an isolated incident. They need to address this issue. Period.

I'll bet if someone started a thread asking how many people have had this happen to them, the numbers would be surprising. I'm curious if it happens more at the values or moderates more than other resorts? I don't know. We have been fortunate so far that it's never happened to us. We've stayed at deluxes and mods so far.

Agreed, SMH, some these same ones are most likely the ones who think it's NOT okay to reuse a mug because "you're stealing" from WDW or WDW can do no wrong, but think it's acceptable to allow WDW to get away with not securing the room and belongings of a guest AFTER they have entered into the room they paid for. It's okay for disney to pack the bus and if you don't like it you should drive . It's okay for WDW to not enforce certain rules and if you don't like it maybe you should stay home:confused3. Maybe disney SHOULD get a grip and DO what they are supposed to do. I'm so tired of hearing, well, WDW should not be held accountable for this and that and the third. Anywhere else that this happened would be blacklisted and a big buyers beware alert issued:sad2:.

Now, I said my peace and hope that everyone is having a fantastic hump day!!!!:rolleyes1

I'm just saying, we had it happen to us. Yep. I've never had it happen before either, so yes, I was shocked to have a 6:30am wake-up call with two concierge employees knocking at my door and telling me it is their policy to check on us.

As Ripleys always says: "believe it or not." :goodvibes

But I can assure you there is no B.S. flag waving here.
