I can't believe this just happened to us. About 15 minutes after I posted the phone rings and it is my husband's work. I thought they were calling him in for more overtime. Nope I was wrong. They told my DH that another officer heard about his situation and that it was a wish trip for DD and wanted to give him his approved time off of work which happens to be from Wednesday the 24th to Sunday the 28th. My DH will have to use his own time of course but to give up a vacation time for my little DD. I can't believe it. He said he wasn't doing anything special anyway but I am still in awe! What an amazing person.

I'm so excited for you and your family, my heart broke when I first read about your dd's reaction, but now I feel so happy for your family! Hopefully we will see you at the party as well.

I don't know how to multiple quote so: Thank you for the advice Maroo,on checking to see if there are any Universal tickets, I hadn't thought about that idea but now it's definitely something I will check out.

Wow..we leave in 12 hours....can't wait...thinking we will go to bed by 6:30..luckily we were up late last night..I just ordered Pizza and we will eat some dinner....we need to get up at 3am...and they are picking us up at 4 am....If you check out the trip report you will find a picture of Emma she was the flower girl at a wedding yesterday...

You are very welcome for the advice....

and...to "multi quote" you just click the + button at the bottom of each post that you want to quote. Then you click "reply" and all of them will show up in your post.

If you want to, you can copy the quote and address pieces of it...just copy and paste the whole quote and delete the parts that you want to cut out...

But you can just address me as Maroo anytime. :goodvibes You don't ever have to quote me, if you don't want to. :thumbsup2

Thank God for the grapevine (rumor mill) LOL. I am surprised all of you didn't hear my daughter screaming with delight when we told her DD was going for SURE!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank all of you for your prayers and good wishes.

SO glad to hear your awesome news! God is so good!!

I just got back from Wish Granter training! I can't wait for my background check to come back so that I can get started. For those who are in the Kansas City area, we are hosting a Walk for Wishes on August 29. It's going to be a lot of fun.

One thing we talked about a lot were the Disney Wishes. They told us about GKTW and one of hte things they said is that they believe the the website for GKTW is purposely vague because part of the fun is being surprised. We were specifically told not to tell them everything about GKTW, One of the issues they mentioned was that everything there is dependant upon donations, so things can change. We don't want anybody disappointed.

For those who have already been who came to the Dis beforehand: Did reading so much about GKTW negatively impact your experience? Did you feel that it took out the element of surprise? Do you think that we should be more tight lipped about what goes on there? I know we get so excited we sometimes forget about that element of surprise.

I also learned a couple of things I would share since I have seen similar comments come up here:

-Make A Wish is only for life threatening illnesses. (That does not mean that you are dying or terminal.) We do not make the determination. We do not have a list of illnesses that are or are not life threatening, so what might be a life threatening illness for one may not bbe life threatening for another. It is striclty up to the doctor to make the designation and we abide by their judgment. If a child does not qualify under our organization, we will try to send them to another, typically Dream Factory which deals with chronic illnesses as well as life threatening.

-In my manual it specifically states that we are not to tell families that the GKTW button will guarantee front of line access as it does not. Although it often works like that, it is not a guarantee. That is the official line. (Again, I have only ever heard of one person having trouble with this, but thought I would clarify.)

We are ready, limo should be here in the next 30 minutes!!! Had to wake up Emma this morning she told me..."Hey mom I slept in!!"

Woke up at 230 am today!! It's 336 now, the limo comes in an hour!! :woohoo:::yay::banana: We are sooo ready for this!! Well actually Malia is still sleeping lol going to wake her up soon! I'll start posting my TR when we get back on the 29th. Until then take care everyone!!!

I think it is fairly common knowledge on the boards that things change regularly at GKTW. It is something that has been discussed on this thread, particularly, over the past year. There are special parties, different special guests, different Christmas parties, and that every single trip will be different from any that you have ever read about on this thread.

This is also addressed on the first two posts on this thread specifically.

For those who have already been who came to the Dis beforehand: Did reading so much about GKTW negatively impact your experience? Did you feel that it took out the element of surprise? Do you think that we should be more tight lipped about what goes on there? I know we get so excited we sometimes forget about that element of surprise.

Having planned and actually been on a Wish Trip, I can tell you that the DIS was a trip saver for us. What we knew, because of the DIS, helped us plan her schedule so that we would not miss key events. It also helped us to know what to expect for real.

MAW (and there are people from MAW reading this, I realize) was not nearly as knowledgable about the trip as this thread. When the MAW staff came to give us our details, I was aware of things we would have to pay for that they were not, I was aware of what buttons would be used for which things and this knowledge helped me greatly.

Also...when it was determined that Lauren could not stay at GKTW, I was able to help "pick" the right resort for her to stay in, because of the DIS.

Certainly, there were things I learned from the DIS that I did not tell her or her brother. Lauren had surprises all trip long. The DIS helped ensure she had surprises. Her family also had some surprises that I knew, but kept from them.

The person researching...sure, they lose a surprise element. Would I trade the knowledge for the surprises - absolutely not.

-In my manual it specifically states that we are not to tell families that the GKTW button will guarantee front of line access as it does not. Although it often works like that, it is not a guarantee. That is the official line. (Again, I have only ever heard of one person having trouble with this, but thought I would clarify.)

Now that you are a wish granter, it is may be against the rules for you to post here about surprises and other things? I am not sure. I am sure there are rules that MAW has given. I am not a wish granter and not planning to become one, because I feel like I am helping wish families on here to prepare for this once in a lifetime trip.

As far as FOTL...we discuss it here because it helps families plan. When I saw three families come back and say that they "waited in XYZ line for over an hour" or "the CM told us never to wait for a character line" and such, it really upset me, because most of these families have very limited time resources.

I want to make sure all of the families know that there are CM's that will let them skip those lines. Will they skip EVERY line...no. I don't think there are any families out there that think they will be escorted to the front of every single line. But they do know to ask for a CM to be directed to the right place.

These families have limited time resources because they literally have limited time, or they are limited because of their son or daughters ability to tolerate heat or stay out all day.

Plus, the FOTL access allows them to make sure they make it back to GKTW in time for the parties.

They will tell each of these families during the GKTW orientation that the button and GAC won't allow FOTL access for characters, but family after family have reported that they had no problem with this. And we had no problem with this on our trip. But we have had families come back and be told that they should NEVER wait (and this was after they waited).

Ok...after saying all of that...

I would really like to know...from the families that are coming back from their trips...

- Was the info on this thread helpful in planning your trips?

- Was there too much info on the thread?

- Would you change anything about your research now that you are back - do more, do less?

We are ready, limo should be here in the next 30 minutes!!! Had to wake up Emma this morning she told me..."Hey mom I slept in!!"

I am so excited for you guys!!! Enjoy your trip! We can't wait to hear about it all when you get back!! :goodvibes

Have fun on your trip!!

I know we have not been on our trip but I did want to share alittle input here about what should be shared. Since my son has been going to so many doctors and hospitals he does not like the element of surprise much these days. This sight has been able to help me share with him what he can expect while there. He likes to know what he will do each day and some sort of schedule. So this site has helped him because he knows what to expect. Don't get me wrong and I believe some surprises there will be great for him and our family. But I believe what we have read has been a help to my family to help better prepare for the trip and also to prepare my son.

I know it maybe different for differernt people but just a thought!

I would be totally lost w/o this thread!

It has helped me so much in my planning. I was completely in the dark and didn't even know about GKTW until the dream planner told us that is where we would be staying. I looked it up and tried to see what to expect.

It is a very vague website for reasons of their own I am sure. (I am not being negative for this just a statement.)

I stumbled upon this site and was amazed at the planning I was able to do because of it.

I was able to plan my days to make it back to GKTW for their evening activities. I was able to plan days to enjoy the village and also was able to combine different parks after hearing how it went with other kids in my DD's situation (rides, etc.)

I wouldn't have known to keep calling for a princess breakfast and my dd would have done w/o that on her wish trip. I wouldn't have known about the jedi training and to have my ds wear clothes representing star wars. I wouldn't have known about them trying to cater to every kids need and would have stilll been freaking out on what to do about all the icecream etc. Wouldn't have known about the Wal-Mart down the street. The list of how this has helped me could go on for literally pages. (The cool Epcot lounge) we would have totatlly skipped all lounges and now are excited to see them.

Would I want all this info! YES YES YES:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

This is a wish trip for my DD (and my ds). I know things could happen for me also but it isn't about me. I see my DD suffer every single day of her life and this is my time to see her be happy for 7 days. (I know she will still be suffering also but to see her really happy with that). I want to know about ALL there is to offer for her so we can make sure to do the things that will be important for HER. (we did include my ds on the planning also but this is dd's trip)

I also would have never never done the photopass and am now so excited to see the pics.

We leave for our trip in just 3 days. I can guarentee when we return my opinion will still be the same.

I wouldn't have known we could use a fridge at the parks for insulin.
Or that we SHOULD ask where to be directed. I would have never thought we could have closer parking since we don't have a handicap sticker. Or that my dd would get to feed the dolphins (we would have skipped Sea World all together w/o this knowledge). OH and the WATER that is free if you ask. How wonderful is that. I have been to disney 4 times and NEVER knew this before. All the buttons are soooooo confusing to me and know I know more about them. The character greets, we have never met characters (except for Cinderella because we ate at the palace once). We never wanted to wait in line and would have avoided it this time also but know we know to at least take the chance to go first.

O.K. I will get off the soap box but like I said w/o this thread I would have been completely lost.

I could go on and on and on about the knowledge gained and I wouldn't trade it for anything. My dd and ds will have surprised along the way. They will be surprised with what matters to them because of this disboard.

MAROO-------------Don't second guess yourself (if you even were). I can tell you that your info has made this trip for us. (And everyone else's info!)

And don't forget all the WONDERFUL people I have come into contact with because of this board. Some of them I am getting to meet and my DD is soooooooooooo excited to meet them and their children also.

The support on this board from people who get "IT". Knowing what it is like to have a special child. Not one of my friends with "normal" kids understand the way all of you do. It brings tears to my eyes.

To think I could be leaving in 3 days w/o having found this board gives me shivers.

Thank you to all who have helped along the way. Even the trip planners
have helped by asking questions I would have never thought to ask.

Thank you to all who have given input and listened to me and for everything on here. I would definetly keep this up, with all your advice and knowledge. I only wish the people in charge knew how much it meant to know what was going to happen. Especially for families like mine who have to have some sort of schedule.

Just think my DD wouldn't be eating with Snow White w/o this board. The Dream Factory couldn't get her into the breakfast but I was able because of YOUR advice.:thumbsup2

:dance3::cool1::grouphug: Keep up the good work

Matt my point excatly. Thank you for bringing this up. My DD also has issues with surprises and keeping her blood sugars regulated depends on stress, moods, food, illness just about everything. Stress and not knowing what to expect will either raise her BG or lower it, usually it will lower her (which is almost more dangerous if not caught).

That's good to know that this was so helpful for everybody. I know that we get so excited about what goes on that we want everybody else to know, and after they told us that I worried that maybe we were giving too much away on this thread. My gut feeling is that the people who come here are planners and like to have all the details ironed out/be knowledgeable about what's going to happen. Since each wish is so unique, no two experiences are going to be the same and there will still be surprises along the way. I just wanted to make sure that I was not giving out too much info about GKTW on this thread.

One more thing on the information that is shared throught his thread. I like that some of the information on the GKTW is shared. I went on the site and saw some of the items like the Candyland Game and the other gift ideals that they have. My son loves Candyland and I almost bought that and a few other items but after reading the site I seen that they gave you the game and the other items that I wanted to buy. So this also has saved me some money. Now my son does not know that he will have that surprise but it sure helped out Mom alot.

I appreciate all of the information and details. Please keep it coming.

Hopefully you will be able to still post on this thread. I am glad you understand not all families will do good with not knowing anything. Some kids need prepared and it really has saved alot of hassle and money knowing about this thread.

Being a Wish Granter has nothing to do with this thread per se. It is only to the families I will be directly working with as their wish granter that I will have to be careful in what I do or do not say about GKTW. I do plan on sending families this way if they have questions. We just want to make sure that we are not inadvertantly doing something that would cause a family to be unhappy with their wish. After all, we want to make this as stress free as possible.

I also got the impression that even the staff were not really that familiar with Give Kids the World and probably do not feel comfortable giving information to families. They were asking me a lot of questions since I have spent about 3 years volunteering there. So I would imagine that the average wish granter simply wouldn't know enough or their information would be mostly secondhand and therefore somewhat inaccurate.

I found all of the info on her VERY helpful!!
Not too much info at all for me!

But I will say that if I was "one of those" people who expected everything that happened to someone else to happen for us too...I could see where you might have some disappointment! Each family seems to have different experiences and "pixie dust" at different places!
Like we had to pay for our luggage both there and back....I know some people didn't have to pay this fee because the person at the counter gave them free baggage. I could have had an attitude about not getting free baggage....but I didn't ...I felt we had other perks to our trip.Know what I mean?

I felt I did just the right amount of research! Especially since so many of our plans went out the window and we just went with the flow!

I am sooo glad I found this website before our trip! Maroo and many others helped me so much!!
That is why I am sticking around..in hopes I too can help someone else plan their trip of a lifetime!!

This is an interesting thought! I had not even thought about the fact that a child would not really want surprises. Lauren wanted surprises, but then some of them she didn't like what we "picked"...so we learned to surprise her but get her opinion on the surprise first. :lmao:

Wow...You are so sweet and this certainly makes me feel better!! I was so afraid that maybe we were giving too much info out or doing something that would impact someone's experience in a negative way. Sounds like the opposite for you guys so far!

And I am so glad you guys have gotten some extra magic scheduled for your trip from hanging out with us!

I agree with you...that the folks here are planners! And no two experiences will be the same...that is something we should definitely point out more often than we do, I think!

First of all...thank you so much for sticking around!! I know it is harder to stick around after your trip, but thank you for being willing to help future families! The more the merrier!!! I hate to hear myself talk. And I talk too much...it is great to have others give ideas and such, too!! :)

I agree...if I read all of the TR's, they all tend to meld together and then I remember just the really magical moments of all of them...and in my head I start to think you will all be sent off with a limo to get on the plane with a rainbow (and free luggage); given $100; upgraded to first class; have private meet and greets with Peter Pan, Snow White, Pooh and Friends, the Princesses; have a backstage tour of Tower of Terror; that you will be able to walk up to any restaurant; that there will be no lines; that the weather will be perfect (no rain, heat, humidity and certainly NO hurricanes!); that no one will get sick; you get to sit up front with the pilot on the way home; etc, etc.

Each moment becomes one trip and I forget that it was 20 different wish children who had just one really magical moment on their individual trips.

and that can be a serious let down!

Maybe we should address that somehow...any ideas? Of a way to make that clear to everyone? Maybe I should post something from this on Post 2? Am I making too much of this thought? Let me think on it and you guys help me think, too.

We have never had this many wish trips in one spot before...this many wish trip reports...and I do think that can get easily misunderstood...when you see them all in one spot and don't step back with a little perspective on them...? Does that make sense?

We got back late last night around 10:00 p.m. It was nice to be home again, but we sure missed Disney, but we especially missed the kind volunteers at GKTW Village.

Our wish grantor called this afternoon to see how things went. Then she told me how the kids need to adjust back to being more normal and not treated like princess' and princes'. We had a great experience at the village and I plan to do a trip report, hopefully I will start it tomorrow.

Stay Tuned!! :goodvibes
