As many of the news outlets like to say, a major corner has been turned today. People who needed food are getting it, they got a ton of people out today espcially the convention center and those on I-10 (which the last one was just removed from I-10) and it seems that they have a good hold on the areas where the remaining people are at waiting to get out which were also the trouble spots.

In one day? Amazing, isn't it? Where are they taking people now - as I've heard that Houston is already overflowing? Have any been taken to Arkansas or Oklahoma?

Best news I've heard all day!! :flower:

They are taking them all throughout Texas I believe. I am sure that they don't care where there going, because they know that they will get 3 meals a day now, bathroom facilities, a safe place to sleep, etc.

Not surprising. We are Americans. We rise to the occasion and we outshine the world in that respect. It takes time to mobilize the effort, load the food, get the men and women, but I can tell you that every Red Cross volunteer class in the next couple of weeks in Ct. are completely full. Money is being collected everywhere in my surrounding area from our local fire dept, Costco, the supermarkets, etc. Instead of our darkest hour, it will be our finast moment.

Undoubtedly a corner has been turned. It is great to see what the American people can do to help one another. Why can't we realize it just takes a little time to organize an effort as massive as this one.

As for where they are taking all the evacuees, I've heard that 8 states so far are setting up shelters and accepting refugees, but I don't specifics.

This gets better. MSNBC is now saying that basically both the convention center and the superdome which were in such bad shape last night are pretty much empty and that the the military people are going to start walking through to make sure everyone is out :) :) :)

Dallas has gotten over 20,000 I believe. I'm in Arkansas and we are also getting several thousand here. I know Fort Chaffee near Fort Smith, AR is getting several thousand.

We have a lot of evacuees who have been here before this part started. Our state parks have many people camping plus many more are in private homes (we have 3) and in hotels. There are a lot of churches and civic groups that have set up shelters. One estimate was that we might get as many as 40,000 in the state.

I don't know about Oklahoma, but I do know that Tennessee has several thousand also.

An estimate made on WWL today said that Houston has about 200,000 evacuees in the city - way more than the number who were bussed in. Many of the people who left early ended up in Houston.

Just heard on WWL that THE SUPERDOME IS EMPTY!!

I have heard that some are waiting to be flown to Atlanta tomorrow. I think they are spreading people all around the area. They say Baton Rouge is now the most populous city in Louisiana. I think they said their population has DOUBLED.

I agree. We will help one another and not stop tomorrow or the next day or the next month. We are here for YOU, Katrina Victims! We will NOT desert you.

We have shelters open here in Charleston, SC. We're ready!! :sunny:

Oklahoma is taking them, but in smaller groups. Muskogee is taking around 2000 as I read in the paper today, and I know a few hundred are coming to Lawton. I haven't heard arbout OKC yet.
