Main vs 2nd seating - please share your thoughts

We prefer 2nd and always change it if we receive 1st!
We just find that we don't have to rush to dinner after port days and we LIKE that!! Although we do have to snack before 2nd seating, it just works for our family.

We have 4 kids, ages 9-15. At home we eat somewhere between 5:30 and 7:30 depending on schedules so we can all sit down together. We chose late seating so to have full time in port without feeling rushed, and because we are night owls in general. Also, we'll be on the Northern Europe cruise, and the sun doesn't set until 10:00 or later anyways.

I guarantee my kids will be eating a heavy snack around 3:30, but they do that now anyways.

Weve had late seaeting as a couple it was okay. But you never can take advantage of the pirates late night buffet as you're too stuffed. We find we prefer eating THEN going to the show. I think its a very personal preference. Now that we have kids its important to eat earlier as they get hungry at 5ish and become a little crazy

We chose early seating, because we are pretty early risers, who tend to go to bed early. it worked out great, except for one night, when the wait staff was so behind that we almost missed our show!!!

Dis Fever you know your family best. For my family we have two adults and three kids ranging from ages 9 to 18. All of us tend to get grumpy if we don't eat early. I would prefer to have more time and not have to hurryback from Port, but it is just not an option because we all get so hungry. I have learned to take a quick shower and pull my hair back into a ponytail in order to get to dinner on time. Another option would be an afternoon snack before dinner, but we are already eating so much food on the boat. :) I really don't want to add another snack to it.

If you eat at 7 pm at home I understand and your I between both sittings. But on the ship the kids will swap to local time overnight and you will do everything to local ship time, ports of call breakfast lunch if at castaway you have to eat by 2 pm. So your on local time. Late eating has health effects adults may get acid reflux if going to bed quickly after a meal and kids upset tummy.

Um, no. My kids could eat a horse at midnight and not get upset tummies. We DID this already, with no ill consequences. Yes, at home they eat late dinner and when their bodies adjust to the local time, they will still be eating a late dinner.

Do what is right for your family. We have an 8, 14 and 16 year old and we have always done late seating. None of us have had any issues from it. We like not being rushed to get ready. On the cruise we stay up later and do various activities. We don't go right to bed. Sometimes we will grab a salad or order a cheese plate at 3-4 to tide us over until dinner if we've been really active. It works for us very well. For us, being assigned early seating would be a downer. Luckily, it would never be hard to change it. I can see that main dining works best for families going to bed earlier or for young children that are on a more rigid schedule. There is no right or wrong and I don't believe anyone will suffer eating early or late. It's a Disney cruise!

We're on the fence for our upcoming trip. 3 kids traveling with us 6, 11, 12. Please shed some light on why you chose one over the other seating time.
Some thoughts...
  • On the Alaskan trips the main dining is more popular as it is closer to East coast travellor's native dining time.
  • I prefer the second dining...
    • you get to sleep in, more packing time, for the final breakfast
    • you get to wait comfortably in the dining room for your time to exit the ship
    • I'm a night owl and regularly up past midnight for adjacent rooms to be quiet before going to sleep
    • second dining works out perfect for the kids night programs
    • I feel less rushed
    • more port time

Yes! That was another reason I chose second seating, later rising the final day and more leisure breakfast. I am nit an early riser or morning person.

You will really have to decide what works for you. Are you an early riser? Have breakfast early? Early Lunch? Kids ages? What time do you normally eat at home? Where are you coming/traveling from, etc. etc. The shows and excursions for us don't factor in our decision. We have always dined Main/Early seating even with our latest cruises as all adults and just dh and I. We have been tempted to try the later time and might someday - might. We wanted to try for our recent and first short cruise but in the end - chose early again. Good luck with your decision.

I have seen many young children fall asleep on the late dinner and taken out by parents carrying them.

This doesn't mean late dining didn't work for them, though. The kids saw the shows, ate, and are now asleep. They've had a full evening. Probably better than dining and falling asleep during the show, especially if now the parent has to climb stairs to get out of the theater. Kids fall asleep. :)

But on the ship the kids will swap to local time overnight and you will do everything to local ship time

My kid doesn't go to a new time overnight, not even a little bit. Not all kids do!

We've had early, we've had late, we like AND dislike both. Even in my family there's no perfect time.

But as much as our stomachs are more ready for dinner later (b/c we are generally still feeling like we're on the west coast, with sleepy mornings and up-late evenings, a week or more into our trips), we feel like we DO more if we have early dining. We're getting prettied-up for shows (if we go to them) anyway, so we're taking showers immediately after boarding anyway.

With early dining, we just feel like we get more evening-time. We reboard, we get cleaned up, we go have dinner. Then we go to a show or we don't; DS goes off to the kid's club for hours and hours, we roam or hit Rainforest Room or go to a bar...then we all meet up, happy and exhausted, and pass out.

With late it feels split up. Shows or wandering or bars with, what, an hour of kid's club if he doesn't go to a show, then dinner, then back to the nightlife. It's too "chunky" for us, if that makes sense outside my head.

But we can switch as needed; whatever works on that cruise, or with whatever we're given if we can't switch. No biggie. There's enough food on the ship, after all.

As for breakfasts, I still remember only ONE breakfast we have EVER gotten to, LOL. Oh wait, no, I remember two more from a Royal cruise, and one more from a Disney cruise. We just aren't early risers onboard. We sleep too well!

For children of that age it is essential that you have Main. They cannot wait 7 or 8 hours between lunch and dinner at 8.15 and they will hit the fast food at 6pm. It's not good for anyone to eat late then go to bed before the food has gone down, this on particular on young children with a lot more soda and candy in them than normal will lead to upset tummy. I have seen many young children fall asleep on the late dinner and taken out by parents carrying them. You will be working and playing to local time on the ship up with the sun at breakfast ( and the room needs to be made up) so eating breakfast around 8 or 9 local, get off the ship port time eat lunch local time so dinner needs to be local as well.
This is excellent advice for me... do things on local time. Going to Alaska, we will have to adjust to the different time zone!

I agree with deciding what is right for your family... we have younger children and there is no way they could make it to 2nd dining without wanting to snack all afternoon and ruin their dinner so therefore we prefer main seating since it works for our kids and it is similar to the schedule we keep at home.

It really depends on your children.. You know them best. We did late seating because we were traveling with a bunch of other adults... My 6 year old fell asleep every night during dinner on my lap. We didn't actually get served meals til 9..and done by 10PM.. For my youngest that was just way to late to sit dining after a full day of activities. If we were at a show/fireworks or something else she would be fine/entertained etc..

We've switched to Main for our upcoming cruise.

I think it depends a lot on what you're used to. We eat dinner fairly late at home so late seating worked well for us this trip. Our DD (almost 4) did fall asleep during dinner a couple of nights but that was more due to her refusal to nap than what time dinner was. :)

We've been on 3 DCL cruises (Dream and Fantasy) and our 4th is this June. We've done both main and late seating and we prefer main, because after dinner our kids have the option of riding the Aquaduck in the evening (except during the Pirate night party) and it's not very crowded at all! We've seen all the shows already, but will still watch our favorites.

During our cruise DH and I got Second seating (8:15). The problem is we usually go to bed around 10:00 PM! And we eat lunch between 11:00 AM and noon. At 5:00 PM we are really hungry.

This time I chose Main Seating but I was wondering at what time is it? Between 5:00 and 7:00?

Thanks in advance.
