Magical Gathering gone Awry (Pics Pg.7-8, Epilogue Pg. 9)

I'm so glad you were able to enjoy your vacation and not let your FIL ruin it.

BIG kudos to you for not laying into FIL when he said those things about your DD.

I am so sorry for what happened with your ILs. I can understand how you wanted a wonderful grandparent/grandchild experience. It's something your children would have always remembered. My heart goes out to DW and to you as well as you wanted to give the gift of a family to your DW and children.

All I know is I keep hoping that DB and his family don't decide to "surprise" us when we're there in November. I don't want to have to deal with everyone else, especially, after reading your trip report.

You had a great day at MK and swimming.

I just found your trip report tonight, and I must say that you are indeed a very good writer. I, too, am sorry that you had to deal with that, it amazes me that grandparents could act like that. You and your DW did the right thing in removing yourselves from the abuse. Good luck to you. You did triumph over the incident! Congratulations. :cheer2: :yay: :cheer2:

We thought you had to get to 50 posts before linking to images, but some stuff on the Tech Support boards has me believing I can post pics without getting to that mark. So here goes.

Disclaimer: DD has a choke hold on DS in the Tweedle pic to get him to look at the guy with the camera, who was a little impatient. She isn't REALLY choking him (notice his face isn't blue).

The Aurora picture is from Day 3 at the MK. Wanted to show off the costumes DW made for the kids. And of course, the Eeyore picture is from the Crystal Palace on Day 6. DS has food in his hands in just about every picture from the character meals we went to on this trip :)

We'll post the final day and a half of the trip report later today. If these don't work, I'll repost them after Post No. 50.

They have worked and they are gorgeous! :grouphug: for your family! I will be waiting patiently :surfweb: for your next installment!

See, I knew y'all were a great little family. I personally love the choke hold. It's a typical big sister move! :rotfl:

I am glad to see that you had a wonderful day at the Magic Kingdom. I'm sure you were a little miffed that you couldn't go to all the ADR's you had made, but it sounds like you made the best of it! Pecos Bills is tops in my book when it comes to burgers!!

I can't wait to read more!!

So how did everything end? Did they even try to get ahold of your DW and talk to her? Did her mother or father try to contact her and apologize or anything? Has her sister called and talked to her?? I am SO SORRY that happened to your DW and family. Glad to know you were able to salvage the rest of the trip. Thanks for the report...I know it helps to talk it over.

You have a beautiful children, who are having a magical time from the look on their faces in the photos :wizard:

They will remember the magic of this trip, thanks to a Mom and Dad who put them first :thumbsup2

The pictures are great and the one with tweedledee and dum is too :lmao:

Can't wait to read about the rest of the trip

What your FIL did was awful. Like others, I am glad that you were able to and chose to remove yourself from him.

Reading your report, it seems to me that there were two distinct sets of expectations, which clashed. You thought they'd be loving GPs and were there to spend time with the children and follow your lead. They thought they were having a Disney vacation their style-- get up and go all day. It's clear that they had no intention or desire to be with you all the time. They chose the bus to DTD because they wanted to be able to come and go on their own schedule and not be hooked to you. You thought they were rude for going to MK without you. They might have thought you were rude for always tagging along or asking them to wait for you. You tried to maintain the illusion of the family vacation you were after by not doing what you wanted. You got up earlier than you would have and you did not go to MK for the evening. These competing visions of how the trip would work probably had to come to a head at some point.

Of course, it did not have to be so ugly, unforgettable and unforgivable, and I am so sorry that you experienced this. Nobody deserves toxic parents, but some of us, unfortunately, have them.

We had similar conflicts with my dad & stepmother when our children were young. They thought we should defer to them as the parents, as the older generation. We thought that the behavior of toddlers should be understood and deferred to. Eventually the day came when I explained to them that we could no longer put their needs first. We were parents now and we were putting our children's needs first. Luckily, they accepted that and since then they've been extremely accommodating: "What would the girls like to do?" "What do you think would work best?" "Whatever makes sense for you" etc. (We don't live nearby and we don't spend a lot of time together.)

I think it's fantastic that you were so honest in your report. Just like Disney is supposed to be magical, families are supposed to be loving and happy. Disney usually succeeds because that's what they're in business to do. Families, on the other hand, aren't always nurturing, and people can feel really left out and inadequate when they see others enjoying great relationships. I think your story really helps people to know that you can be a good parent and enjoy a special vacation with your children even if your own family of origin is not what you wish it were.

I just wanted to say that you have a lovely family. I'm really enjoying your trip report...bummer about the ILs. I hope it all works out in the end.

Wow I expected some drama but that was really bad. I'm so glad you managed to get a new place and still have a good time. You have a beautiful family and as I've learned with my own mom you can't make them appriciate your children. It is there loss and one day they will see that and be sad for there behavior.

Your pictures are really good and I love the one with your daughter holding onto your son. Priceless.

Days 7-8

We didn’t get to bed until 1 a.m. after our day at the MK. DW felt really dehydrated when we got back to CBR, so I went driving all over the Caribbean looking for a drink machine that wasn’t out of bottled water! The tap water in Florida tastes horrible to us. We avoid the stuff at all costs. Even a Coke with ice cubes in it is nasty! The drink machines I knew about in Trinidad South were both out of order, so I looked in Trinidad North, Aruba, Jamaica, Martinique and Old Port Royale. I would pull into the bus stop at each place, check to see if it had water in stock while watching to make sure there weren’t any Disney buses that I was going to be holding up, and then rush on to the next one. I finally found a machine with water in stock at the Old Port Royale bus stop (it was midnight-ish, so the shops there were closed) and bought three to have on hand. It was sort of a fun little adventure and really the only time I got to drive around the resort – even if it was dark! We definitely want to go back to CBR now and fully experience it (swim in the main pool, eat at the restaurant for lunch or dinner, that sort of thing).

Anyway, we got up around 9 a.m. on Day 7 (Labor Day) and started getting ready for our planned day at AK. I made the usual breakfast run. We decided to take the van to the AK and got there by about 11 a.m.

We went to see “It’s Tough to be a Bug” first thing and got right in. DS said it was scary AND that he wanted to do it again. DD loved it. From there, we headed to Asia to check out Expedition Everest.

When we got to Everest, it was broken, so we decided to work our way towards Africa and the Maharajah Jungle Trek. DS really liked the Tigers. By the time we got through, we were all sweating from the heat and humidity and hungry for lunch. DW decided we should eat at Tusker House. We got a fastpass for the Safari and then went in to eat. It was really crowded. DW and I both thought the food was great. I had my favorite African food, the rotisserie chicken, and of course it was yummy. DW had the turkey wrap with some corn chowder and cucumber salad. DD had a rotisserie chicken leg with mashed potatoes. DS just had fries.

After lunch, I was feeling run down from a cold I was catching, so I went to the first aid stand and got some free generic Sudafed and Tylenol packets. It’s pretty nice that Disney takes care of you like that without charging you $10 for a whole package of meds. I guess it’s like when you’re at the casino and they bring you free booze to keep you there losing your money ;)

While we were in line for the Safari, DS wandered away. Thankfully, someone turned him around and told him to go back to his momma. For a brief moment, DW was scared to death. The ride itself was pretty eventful. We saw lots of animals. The highlights were seeing some giraffes drinking water, the elephants, and a large animal with big horns that stands out for DW (she’s not a zoologist, so I don’t have a name for you.)

From the Safari, we headed back to Expedition Everest. I got in the single-rider line while the rest of the family waited. I figured the single-rider line would be mostly other people like me – dads or moms that didn’t have anyone to ride with or whatever. But I guess a lot of people (smartly, I guess) decided this line was a way to avoid the long standby time, even if they weren’t by themselves. I was in line behind lots of people who were obviously together but didn’t mind riding separate. The end result was about a 20-minute wait for me to get on the ride. Still, it was worth it in the end. I screamed my head off! Going backwards in the dark was a blast. DW, DD and DS were waiting for me in the post-ride gift shop (DW said she was mostly in there to soak in the air conditioning). I got a T-shirt as a souvenir from the ride and we trekked toward Camp Minnie-Mickey.

We met Flik from “A Bug’s Life;” it started to rain lightly, so Flik had to move under cover while were waiting. The rain picked up shortly thereafter and we all got soaked. As the rain let up, we met Mickey and then headed toward the “Festival of the Lion King.”

DD got play around at center stage with several of the other kids and some CMs before the Lion King show started. DS would occasionally wander out there looking for his big sister and then come scurrying back to mommy and daddy in the stands.

We really enjoyed the show. We were in the giraffe group. DS fell asleep during the show. DD liked it a lot. The monkey guys doing the circus stunts were really fun to watch and the singing was really nice. We highly recommend the show.

After the show, the park was closing, so we worked toward the exit with everyone else. We stopped at the grocery store on the way back to CBR to pick up some juice and cold medicine.

Once we were back at the resort, I took a little nap to get some of my energy back for our big dinner. DW tried to get the kids to nap with me to no avail. We thought it would seem like a long break between the AK closing and our 9:15 ADR at Ohana, but the time really flew by.

We left for Ohana about 8:30. The rain had stopped and it was a little cooler outside than it had been earlier in the trip. We checked in at Ohana by 9 and ordered a very rummy pineapple drink. We got seated right away and DW ordered more pineapple juice to go in (water down!) the drink, which we were sharing. After we got seated, the food started coming right away. First they brought salad and juice for the kids. Then they brought the appetizers – peel-and-eat shrimp, chicken wings and fried wontons with dips. Next, they brought a bowl of vegetables and some scalloped potatoes (good stuff). Then they started bringing the skewers of meat: steak and pork, then turkey and sausage. DW got a hold of some steak that was a little too rare (cold). Other than that, everything was extra delicious. At one point during the meal, DD got up and learned a hula. She was shy about doing it at first, but we told her she’d get a necklace (lei) for getting up and that was enough to convince her. Our table was near a window facing Cinderella’s castle at the MK. As it got close to dessert time, “Wishes” started and Ohana switched the audio over to the “Wishes” soundtrack. We actually got to see all of the fireworks this time from that vantage point (unlike the night before at the MK). It was indeed magical to watch.

The Ohana experience really was a nice way to end what was such a roller-coaster-ride of a trip for our family.

The next day, we had 10:40 reservations for the character breakfast at Chef Mickey’s. DW really liked Goofy’s Vegetable Lasagna. We met Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Chip, Dale and Goofy. I got Mickey to sign a cap I bought the night before at the MK, which was neat for me. I’ve been an autograph collector of sorts all of my life.

By noon, we were on our way back home to Georgia, filled with lots of good memories and some bad. We’re still trying to make sense of it all. We really appreciate all of the support we’ve gotten over the last few days as we’ve told our story. We plan on coming back in the next day or so with an epilogue detailing a little of what’s happened since the trip (Saturday 9/16 marks two weeks since "the incident.")

Here are a few more pictures that I’m really proud of. The picture of us at Ohana in front of the fire pit is my favorite from the trip. The Goofy picture at Chef Mickey’s is probably my second favorite. I also threw in a picture of the kids with Tigger at Crystal Palace the day before that I think is really cute (DS has a fork in his hand this time!).

Thanks for your story...You look like a great family! I love the picture of y'all in the red hawaiian outfits...I can see why it is your favorite. Thanks again.

Great TR. I'm so glad you were able to salvage some of the magic! :)

I just started reading your report tonight and I just loved it. I have to say I can't imagine anyone not wanting to be with your little ones...they are just adorable and so photogenic! It looks like you still had a ton of fun despite things not going as planned. I love the coordinating red outfits too...really cute! Thanks for the great read.

Precious family! I'm very happy that ya'll were able to "move on" after the incident and have a great time.

Your trip report was wonderfully told. I am sad that you had the "incident" to deal with, but you pulled it all back together and still made magical memories for your children. Sometimes our expectations are not able to be met by our families!

FL water tastes "yucky" to those of us who live here too! My sister has visited CBR for the past seven years (with the exception of one in there during some renovations) - she loves it there, and will not try anywhere else (well except my house!)

I think I saw your family in the outfits you had on at Ohanas. Did you wear them anywhere besides Ohanas? I am trying to remember what DD and I did that week of your trip!
