My DH and I will be going down next week (alone for the first time :woohoo: ) and will be taking the ME. Usually we get a towncar for the family, but this time since it's only the two of us, we decided on the ME. We will be arriving about 9:30 p.m. and really do not want to wait until late at nite or morning for our bags. Can we use the ME service but pick up our own bags at the baggage carousel? Now that they have changed the terminal, will it be a problem? Only 5 days until VACATION and boy do I need one!! :cool1:  :woohoo: :yay: :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :bounce: :bounce:

Just don't put your tags on the suitcases and you should have no problem picking up your luggage at the carousel. You can go check in afterwards.

Whoa.....what does "changed terminal" mean? Where can I find info on this?

TIA,

Laura :surfweb:

Part of the agreement between OIA and Disney that allows Disney to keep operating Magical Express through 2001 includes moving the counter from side A to side B of the airport. It needs to be stressed this is still all the same terminal, just different sides of it (e.g. left / right, or front / back, or east / west...)

Yes. That's one option. If you don't use the yellow tags, your bags will go to the baggage carousel.

But that wouldn't be my choice.

If I were arriving that late, I would pack a carry-on bag with anything we need overnight. I would use the yellow tags on the checked bags, along with a hand-written tag on each bag, "Do not deliver until after 9:00 a.m."

That way, when we arrive at MCO, we could go straight to the DME coach, instead of wasting time going to baggage claim and waiting there. It's likely that we would arrive at the resort sooner. We could check in, without having to drag our baggage around the resort. The next day, the baggage would "magicially appear" in our room.

DME hasn't moved yet. That's just part of the agreement to keep Magical Express going for 5 more years. The move will probably happen some time this year. I'm sure the Magical Express booklets will have information about which terminal to go to.

For someone who is using the DME luggage transfers, the terminal does not make any difference. It's simply a matter of turning right or turning left when you get off the train from your airside, because the two "terminals" are really just two sides of the same building. It someone chooses to subject him- or herself to the inconvenience of retrieving his or her own luggage, then there's an added inconvenience if the baggage claim and DME are not in the same terminal.

Boy Horace,

You sure do trust ME?????? For now I'd say that I've read so many complaints that I'm not comfortable using it. Only time will tell.

Yes you absolutely can!! As previously mentioned DONT tag your bags with the yellow barcoded tags in your DME booklet. When you get off the plane go to the luggage carousel get your bags then head over to the DME area!!! Have a great trip. Belle

Just be aware that at times the MCO baggage claim can take 10 minutes and others over an hour and be prepared to wait for your bags.

HH isn't the only one who trusts DME with their luggage...I've used them three times now and have had wonderful experiences. Have to ask you....where have you gotten your info regarding DME losing luggage?? I would say that the vast majority of people have been very happy with DME.

goofy4tink,

I am a DVC member and there was a thread on there about ME experiences. Without exxagerating, one out of every 6 or 7 people experienced major problems. Your 3 great experiences are pure luck. I hope that luck continues for you because when it doesn't you'll think of me. ME is riddled with problems and Disney knows it. It was a bad idea with a capital B. Aslo I visit WDW about 5 or 6 times per year. Every time I've went since ME has started I have personally spoke to or overheard unhappy guests.

Dave...also a DVC member....and I usually go to WDW 2-3 times a year. So, I do have a fair idea of what I'm talking about. I find that the majority of people that post experiences, are posting to relate some bad experience. For the most part...those with good experiences seldom post. Don't know why that is, it just is. While I can understand the occasional bad experience with DME, I have to assume that most people have a good experience. Believe me...it wouldn't last long if it doesn't measure up to expectations as advertised. BAGS has been running this same service throughout the country in other areas...LV for one I believe. If there is an issue with baggage handling, it would be with BAGS, who subcontracts for Disney. Then, Mears runs the buses for Disney. If I'm mistaken in any of this, (and I could very well be) I'm sure Tyler will correct me. He's really in the know.

So....I guess we'll see what the status of DME is down the road. But, in the meantime....we still want to hear those experiences, both good and bad. As a board co-moderator I appreciate our being able to let others know of our experiences without harshness or critisicms on this board. Thanks for being so 'nice' all of you!!!

goofy4tink,

Thanks for the thoughts on this. Things have gotten better but this guy isn't willing to let more cooks into the kitchen so to speak. Adding BAGS , Mears whoever into the mix is a recipe for disaster IMO. I'll monitor the reviews and maybe one day when the kinks are worked out I'll give it a try.

I have to agree with Goofy4Tink on this one. I have used DME on my May 2005, October 2005, December 2005 and January 2006 trips. I havent had one bad experience in the bunch. I always pack a carry on so I have any items I think I would need for the first few hours at least and any valuables and prescriptions including glasses, on me. In One case the bags have actually beat us to the room. Usually I couldnt tell you as I Am off enjoying a park so I wouldnt know when the bags made it to the room!!! There were several articles recently done by the Orlando Sentinel that DME Is going to continue untill at least 2011. I dont think that Disney would bother to extend a failing project? I do think that the free DME service is just awesome and gives people a great choice between that, a towncar service which is more personalized or renting a car which would allow more freedom to go off property. Me personally, I almost never make it off the property so DME works great for my situation!!! Rock on DME!!! Belle

Well let's see here. DME has been in operation about 45 weeks. That's about 315 days. It averages 6,000 users a day. 6,000 times 315 equals 1.89 MILLION users. If one out of 7 "experienced major problems," that would mean 270,000 guests "experienced major problems." 270 THOUSAND!!! That doesn't seem to be the truth, now does it???

This quote notwithstanding, Disney's Magical Express is the name of the overall service; Disney does NOT "find" anything anywhere. Aircraft Service International Group - with more than a dozen years successful experience providing luggage transfer services - well, handles the luggage. That company pulls the tagged luggage before it ever gets into the public arena, loads it on trucks and delivers it to the Resorts. From there, yes, Disney CMs are responsible for sorting the luggage and delivering it to the individual rooms.
Do potential DME users know that if DME-tagged luggage is misdirected by the airlines (remember, three million bags suffered this fate worldwide last year alone) that ASIG will act on behalf of the traveler, so the traveler can still head right on over to Disney instead of having to hang around the airport filling out forms and trying to convince the airline that it's THAT entity's responsibility to locate and deliver said luggage?
Is it possible the complainants of whom you're aware had what turned out to be unreasonable expectations? You know, things like one's luggage being in one's room on arrival? Anyway, if you'll tell me the titles of the threads with the complaints, and on which board or boards said posts can be found, I would love to read them. Thanks!

I see where you are coming from here. I can't say how many complaints or problems there have been. What I can say is that ME is still a work in progress. On the DVC boards there was a thread 350+ posts long with many bad experiences. Maybe I'm just paranoid but I'm still a little uneasy using this. Also, what about the time issue? How long from the time you land until you are at the resort? How long after that is the luggage arriving? Thanks for the thouhts Eric. I as too harsh with this and for that I apologize. :thumbsup2

Dave, after the past three uses of DME, I have been in my resort check-in line 70 minutes after deplaning. The only time I have beaten that time was using Tiffany Towncar, with only carry-on luggage...so no baggage to claim. And that time it took me about 55 minutes from deplaning to my resort check-in line. I have gotten my bags about 15-20 minutes after being able to get into my room. In most cases I have not been able to get into my room upon checking in...had to wait at least 3 hrs. at the minimum. But my bags were brought shortly after that.

I agree. Most of the complaints have been from people who didn't bother to understand fully how Magical Express works. In another recent thread, I wrote:
There have been numerous people on this board who have complained that they had to wait several hours in their room for their luggage to be delivered before they could do anything else. Those people missed the point about DME. Yes, it's going to take a few hours for the baggage to be delivered. After all, the baggage needs to be unloaded from the aircraft, sorted at the airport, transported on a baggage truck, unloaded at the resort, and delivered when the bellmen aren't busy with guests who are checking in or with earlier DME baggage. However, there's no reason to wait in the room. Disney pays the inbound gratuity, so you don't have to be in the room. The trick is to take a small carry-on with anything you need upon arrival; that's what Disney recommends.

A few people on this board people have had legitimate complaints about Magical Express. But most complaints seem to be either from people who had unrealistic expectations, or who had not yet used Magical Express, but had concerns about things that could go wrong.

By the way, I'm someone for whom Magical Express didn't work quite as it's supposed to. One time, I had to call for our luggage when we returned to our room at night from Epcot — seven hours after we landed. (It was then delivered promptly.) I should not have had to call. The luggage should have shown up while we were out having fun. That's what usually happens. But it was really no big deal. I still think Magical Express is great, and I would gladly use it again.

This is really great stuff. I'm glad to hear some positive feedback about ME. I mean lets face it, anything that is given as a freebie by Disney is a great thing. Maybe as my son ages a little I'll give it a try. Nice to hear the good stuff. Also, I had read all this bad stuff about ME on the DVC forums and then I come here and the first thread I read is a ME horror story. This certainly helps.

Thanks again guys,

DAVE

Very cool change in tone, Dave. Thanks. :thumbsup2

Your "time" question. I used DME on its 4th day of operation, about as new as new can be. It took me 53 minutes from the time I got into the DME line at the airport until I was dropped off at CBR.

53 minutes. Would I have gotten there any sooner with a rental car or limo? As always, let's do the math....

Driving time is about 30 minutes no matter what vehicle you're in. That leaves 23 minutes for me to wait in line at the DME counter, wait in my bus queue, then wait for the bus to leave. 23 minutes is in play. So let's say you rent a car or get a limo. You have to wait at baggage claim. Can we say an average wait is 10 minutes until you actually get your bags in hand? We've all waited longer, but let's look at a pretty-good-case scenario and say 10 minutes. If you got a limo, let's say 5 minutes for the driver to bring the car around and load your luggage. If you rent a car, let's say best case of 5 minutes if you have one of those features where you go directly to the car without interacting with anyone or waiting in line at the rental counter. So either way, let's call it best case of 15 minutes. 30 + 15 = 45 minutes, a whopping 8 minutes faster than my actual experience.

I have no desire to leave WDW property, so I'd never rent a car. I would have done a limo had DME not been around. But with DME being free, in the above example I'm looking at paying $120 for at best getting to my resort 8 minutes faster than I actually did. That figures out to that 8 minutes costing me a pro-rated amount of $900 per hour. OUCH. And, if you stop at a grocery store in your car or make a grocery stop in a limo, you just blew ANY time advantage over DME, and I've beat you to the resort. I got a grocery delivery from Gooding's, so it's not like we were without breakfast foods and snacks and bottled water and such.

For the people who complain about the luggage taking a long time to arrive. Plan for it, and it's no problem. I guess people who's personality says "I have to fully unpack the second I get there and I can't enjoy my vacation until I do so" should avoid DME. The circumstances matched very well to my personality as well as my existing behavior. In the 17 years I've been flying as an adult I've ALWAYS packed a carry-on with my needs for the first 24 hours just in case the AIRLINE delays my checked luggage. So, my luggage "magically appeared" in my room at CBR about 4 hours after my plane landed. I don't know exactly when because I wasn't in my room waiting around for it. We were in the pool with our kids (5 and 2.5) enjoying the start of our vacation, since we were prepared with bathing suits and "beach shoes" (as our kids call them) as well as changes of clothes in case a young one made an inevitable mess. We had two rooms (our in-laws tagged along :guilty: ) and we found ALL of our checked lugagge inside our rooms when we returned from the pool.

For the people who complain about DME picking up too early on the return trip. We were picked up the schedueld 3 hours prior to our flight's scheduled departure, thankfully. I found the ONLY available skycap as soon as I got off the bus, to help the 6 of us with our 12 bags (checked and carry-ons) get to the airline ticket counter. We waited I don't know how long at security, but it was LOOONG. This was a Saturday around 5:00 p.m. Also, because of the timing, we had to get food at the airport to feed our kids. It's not like we were able to bring any with us after a week at WDW, and it's not like the kids could have waited until after we got home around 10:00 p.m. We waited in huge lines at the mini food court in our terminal (past security). We then took the very short stroll to our gate and saw that they had already begun boarding. So thank goodness for that pickup 3 hours before departure, in our case.

My experiences with DME were excellent, and I was one of the initial guinea pigs. As others have said, I can understand people complaining if they didn't read all the info in the DME packet (or on this board!) and thus had unrealistic expectations, but that's not the fault of DME or of Disney. It would be kind of like saying that the service in a restaurant was horrible because the food didn't arrive two minutes after we ordered. Since we know it will take significantly longer, we plan for it in advance (maybe some bread and butter from the basket on the table while we wait?, maybe reservations 30 minutes earlier than the time when we expect to feel "starving?") and don't get all annoyed and righteously indignant because we're not digging in to our food two minutes after we handed the server our menus.
