We hve a rental car that we are picking up and dropping off at the airport. Can I still attach the luggage tags and know that my luggage will be delivered to my room? Wasn't sure if they would do that if we didn't actually check in and use the magical express.... thanks!

Doing that is officially not permitted.
However, through a confluence of the various steps in the Magical Express luggage handling process, it actually works, although you are on your own regarding certain misdirected baggage claims procedures.
