MAGICal Christmas 2008 - December 20, 2008

Good question, Amy!!! Since we have only been on one other Disney cruise and had a pretty dull DIS group:worried: I don't have anything to compare this to. We could certainly do it either way. I was thinking that each family get paired with another family and they leave "Secret Santa" gifts for them each day and then at the end of the cruise we could have another meet where we revealed ourselves to each other and maybe tie in the ornament exchange at that meet. What do you think? Again, I am open to suggestions!:worship:

Shannon

I guess because I've been involved in some SUPER active threads (2 of the previous DVC member cruises), we've had so much activity going on like little gifts for everyone, buttons that someone made for everyone to wear to indicate our DIS thread members, gifts for the kids, group dining room reservations, pirate night group picture, Castaway Cay group meet area, a couple of different DIS meets (one in the terminal and one onboard), group t-shirts, etc, etc, etc. Diana knows what I'm talking about.

Anyway, what we could do is just do the secret santa thing just like you said. Have families sign up and then have them bring gifts each day. I bet that you'll have a smaller group with that, and besides, it's only one family, so that's a totally different thing.

Wow, Amy, that all sounds like so much fun!!! Why can't we do some of those things? Like I said, our DIS group did absolutely NOTHING (and that's the only one I have to go by)!! I know, I can only handle organizing one thing, but I would certainly LOVE to participate in all those kinds of things! Maybe we could put together some of the things you mentioned. How are you at organizing events? I am not so good, I don't have a crafty mind, and I work entirely too much to be able to devote as much time as need be to make it perfect for Christmas!:santa: I would help in anyway possible, though. I want this to be a great cruise for myself and the kids. What do you think?:confused3

We most certainly can do some of these, and I would love to help.

As for the group t-shirts, I think that Diana had mentioned some of this at the very beginning of this thread. We had some "artists" or at least creative people, create a few t-shirt ideas then we all voted on the t-shirt design that we all liked best. Then, Diana set up a Cafepress store and each person could order the items that they wanted. In Cafepress, I know that you can add $$ onto items to make money, or just set it up with the Cafepress amts. We didn't set the store up to make any money, so the items were only what Cafepress charged. So, if we had some people that are "creative", we could start that. And, if Diana shows up around here soon, maybe she can post the link to our old cruise site on Cafepress and see what I'm talking about.

For the kids gifts, one year we had a girl take "donations" from the parents, and then she did iron-on transfers onto pillowcases for each of the kids and she dropped them off at everybody's room, so the kids could get them signed by the characters. The following year, Diana and I found an online source for photo frame mats, we put each kids name and some Mickey's heads on the frame, then we gave them to the kids on the first day of the cruise, and same thing, they could get them autographed, then put a picture in them for home. They were 8x10 mats with a 5x7 opening (or maybe it was 4x6 opening). The only thing with these, is that while it's very cool, it does cost money, so we would ask for donations from the parents that asked for their kids to be put on the "kids list". I think that last year we just did paypal donations. Maybe Diana remembers more that I can't think of.

Let's see, what else. We all met with our "matching shirts" in the terminal and waited together, let the kids all meet and talked amongst ourselves while we waited until the first boarding announcement was made. Then, we had a DIS meet once we got onboard that first afternoon. I know that once we had it on deck 10 before the sailaway party, and maybe once was another time. I don't remember. I was on another DCL cruise last April and we all met in one of the lounges at 3pm, before the lifeboat drill, which was nice because it was inside, but in December, it might be beautiful outside.

Hmm, what else!! We had a lot of people that had main dining, and I had made a contact with one of the people in dining who does the table setups for the dining rooms. We were able to seat all of our "DIS" tables on one whole side of the restaurants each night. That was pretty cool, because we knew that each night, we would see all of our "new" friends.

The pirate night picture - someone talked to shutters onboard and arranged a time for us all to meet in the atrium at a certain time on pirate night and we all met out there and they had shutters take the picture of our entire group from up above on the 4th floor overlooking the atrium. That was really cool, because almost our entire group was dressed in some kind of pirate attire!!! If I can find the pic on our group pic DVD, I'll post it.

We kind of made a "designated" DIS portion of the beach that everyone met up at on Castaway Cay. It was all the way down the family beach, because there were less people down there, and besides, it was closer to Heads Up bar!! Konk Koolers, here I come!!! And, it was right by some bathrooms too.

Oh, one more thing that we talked about was an ornament exchange. I think that could be something that we could do one afternoon, maybe on a sea day (one of our sea days is Christmas, so that's an option), and have everyone do a draw for an ornament. We could have everyone that is interested bring a wrapped ornament for the exchange and meet at a specific time, maybe in one of the lounges or on the 5th floor in the atrium with all the chairs. Just ideas. Then, have every pick a number from a hat, they get to pick one of the wrapped ornaments, and then once everyone has picked, you can open your ornament.

DHs company does a gift exchange similar, but they do "steals" etc, which might take WAY too much time!!! But, we can wait to see how many people we have interested first.

Less than 6 months to go :cool1:

Wow, you all have some great gift and meet ideas. We are definately in but since it is our first Disney cruise I am just waiting to hear what we are supposed to do in terms of buying something for one family or little things for everyone.
Is it okay to have a Christmas stocking as a fish extender? Will that work? :confused3

I just booked our hotel for the night before the cruise. We are driving from PA and Dh wanted to leave our house on Friday and drive 1/2 on Friday and 1/2 on Saturday. I was very concerned that if we hit weather or traffic that we would miss the boat. It took a lot of convincing but I finally convinced him ::yes:: that we need to leave on Thursday and drive Thurs and Fri. Anyway, we are staying at the Hampton Inn off 95 at the exit for the space shuttle. That way we only have a 1/2 hour drive on Saturday.

Everyone have a great day. We are leaving tomorrow for a week at the shore. It will be nice to get away and have a break from my college summer classes.

I think that a stocking would be a GREAT little fish extender!!!

We made our plans for the night before just this week too. We live on the other coast of FL, so it's only a 2.5 hr drive over to Pt Canaveral, but we don't like to have to drive that on the morning of the cruise. So, usually, we drive to WDW the night before, stay there and then drive the hour to the port in the morning.

But, our 10th anniversary is the 19th:lovestruc , so we were trying to decide what to do. So, we made ressies at VWL for a 1br for Friday night. We're going to leave as soon as school is out on Friday, and head to WDW. We're going to try to catch the fireworks at MK at 6pm that night, then drop the girls off at the Cub's Den at WL, and anniversary dinner at Artist Point.

We'll grab a quick breakfast on Saturday morning, and then head to the port.

Does anyone have any idea on the weather when cruising in Dec.? We have always went in Spring and Summer months.

While we've never cruised during December, we have been to Jamaica 3 yrs in a row for our honeymoon and 2 of our anniversaries and it was beautiful & warm. So, I would imagine that Grand Cayman (or Costa Maya, whichever we go to) and Cozumel will be nice & warm.

But, since the Bahamas (Castaway Cay) are about the same as Florida, weather in December is VERY iffy. We can have the most beautiful weather in the 80s, or it can be chilly in the 60s. But, the majority of the days are beautiful and in the upper 70s. I think that the biggest problem at Castaway Cay is going to be the water temperature. It may very well be quite chilly in the water.

Thanks, that is kind of what I was thinking. Amy, you have some great ideas. The shirts would really be neat!

Ok, so I have an "idea" of a t-shirt design, but I'm not good enough in Photoshop to pull it off, I don't think. Is anyone else good at Photoshop???

My thoughts were a picture of the ship (since we can't use Mickey), and then maybe photoshop maybe an image of a Christmas tree or ornaments, or snowmen, or something on it that indicates Christmas. Then, I was thinking that you could put something like, "Sailing on our MAGICal Christmas Cruise" at the top, and the dates December 20-27, 2008 on the bottom. Or something like that????

Here's the link to our old cafepress site:
www.cafepress.com/ssmc06

You can see the designs that we put on the front and back of the shirt. I was thinking a very similar design to the back, except without the sand sculpture, and with the Christmas stuff.

Hey, everyone!!! I haven't been on in a while. I am Amy's (alikat99's) DH. Starting to really look forward to this vacation!

We will all be well dressed pirates! My sister is quite a seamstress and has already begun the making of 16 pirate costumes for pirate night! Look for us we will be the pirates with the real snazzy outfits.

She is also working on fish hangers and little exchange things with her 4 kids. I am the planner - that is my job!!!

Hey everyone!
I can't believe that the cruise is so close. My mom mentioned yesterday that we need to start thinking about where we want to dine after the cruise becasue 180 days will be here soon. I love all the ideas floating about out there. I'm sort of good with photoshop. I'm kind of an amatuer photographer. I'll fool around with it and see what I can come up with. right now I'm working on door signs and our fish extender. I've got all the stuff for the fish extender now I've just got to figure out how to make it without sewing. I'm also making a shirt for my mom to wear on her birthday. I'm pretty good at organzing things so if there is something that everyone wants to do I'll be glad to help put it together. I love planning and except for my online classes I'm free till august first. That's when we leave for WDW. Is anyone going to WDWafter the cruise? If so do you have anything planned? Were not sure whther we want to be in a park or not.

Lissa

Lissa,
We are going to WDW after the cruise. I was also thinking we are getting close to the 180 day mark. I can't believe it is that close.
We are not going to do the parks because we are going in August. We figure we will just spend time at the hotel and relax after the go go go of the cruise. My dd's birthday is the 29th so we are going to have a birthday party for her and I am going to take her and my other dd to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at the marketplace.
We are also having a New Years Eve party at OKW. My dh and I used to work at Disney and we still know a few people there so we are going to have them over.
I guess we are just treating it as a rest time and we will try a few restaurants around property at the other hotels.
Are you guys going into the parks?

Angie

You know, it all sounds like a lot of fun, but I don't want to "overbook" our week with meets / exchanges / etc... so I'm just gonna 'talk out loud' for a minute to see if I can make some sense out of my thoughts :) there are so many great ideas, and I agree that as a group we should start nailing some things down so we can be ready for shopping, etc., by early September or else the cruise will slip up on us and we'll all be frantic (LOL).

T-shirts -- love the idea and we're interested! No designers here, but I've heard great things about using cafepress.

Gifts -- we've done gifts a couple of different ways on previous cruises -- one where everyone brought their trinkets to the 1st day meet that was prior to the safety drill, and another where folks dropped things off in fish extenders throughout the cruise. Some folks put names on the things they had so if someone didn't make it to the meet-and-greet, they could drop it off later; others just had enough for everyone and just had everyone pick up something. When there are 30+ DIS families, it gets a little hectic, and for some folks, it's just easier to make a hallway run and drop stuff off :) Also if you have a delay in getting your luggage in your cabin, you might not have your gift for the first day meet-and-greet.

Fish Extender exchange -- some folks prefer to drop stuff off for fellow DISers in their fish extenders, but not everyone brings a fish extender. FWIW, you don't have to have a fancy fish extender; on our last cruise, we all had fabric tote bags that we hung outside that were fine for our new friends to drop stuff off. Some folks made one drop while others dropped stuff daily and others just a couple of times. We did this instead of doing a gift exchange at the meet-and-greet on the first day because our meet-and-greet was outside on Deck 9. Another things about the Fish Extenders is that as a giver, you might have something that you want to give on a particular day - like formal night or pirate night - so that would be the day you choose to make the hallway run :)

Secret Santa - I love this idea, but for the one who coordinates it, don't tell us if you do the "draw two names and you have each other" thing because it might be fun to leave surprises all week with hints or clues about your DIS identity and then reveal yourself at the end :) If you have someone, then you'd know they have you - see what I mean? Of course you can do it that way - just don't tell us :)

Ornaments - it might be that the ornaments are incorporated into the other "exchange" options. I can just see us having so many things that we spend the whole time on the ship dropping stuff off :) Good thing I will have the boys to do some drops for me (hee hee).

Meet-and-greets:

In the terminal -- absolutely agree that this is a great time to get together for those who are arriving prior to boarding time! We've met DISers in the terminal prior to sailing both times from Port Canaveral and we met DISers (yep, Lissa, that's you and your family) in the airport prior to our overseas cruise and each time that enhanced our pre-cruise experience!

On the first day -- just from our experience, I think an indoor meet-and-greet in a not-quite-so-busy but not out of the way location works well. indoors in case of inclement weather and to allow for plenty of space without interfering with other guests, not out of the way so that first-time-cruisers can find it without getting lost, and plenty of seating options for those who might need / want it. We've found that the Promenade Lounge on Deck 3 mid-ship (towards aft) has been a good location. We've gone to one on Deck 9 near the pools, but there was so much loudness from the music and comings and goings that it was difficult to do more than say "hey" and we were a small group (just four families).

During the week -- sea days would be a great time to have a meet time ... as it gets closer, we can check navigators to see what time might be good.

DS just walked in so I have to stop posting... still a secret.

Sounds like fun!
We'll be watching for a large group of roving pirates. pirate:

We brought full pirate costumes on our first DCL cruise, but I think we'll keep it more low key this time; mostly to save luggage space. Honestly though, I felt this cruise was sooo far in the distant future when I booked, I haven't really done much planning yet... so who knows?

I will say that after spending hours yesterday trying to figure out our airfare options, it's feeling a bit more real now.

Talk about frustrating BTW. I was waiting for Southwest to open their dates since we have some RR awards with them. Then when they do, the day we want to fly to FL is completely blocked out. OK, no problem, we'll use the free trips to fly home instead... except not into our preferred airport, nothing at all available there either.
:badpc:

I think I've finally got a workable plan; but not without switching dates, airports, and travel groups. Sheesh!

Finding a balance on the cruise is always interesting. I know we got more involved with Dis activities on our 2 week cruise than we did on our 7 day cruise, just a matter of having more time.

I do want to be involved in some of the Dis activities, but will have to limit which ones as we get the details hammered out.

So are you all thinking that the Secret Santa will be a family to family thing, not person to person? Do we have anything like that planned for the kids, or would they just be part of the family exchange if we go that route?
