Magic Kingdom No Longer Dry Park Will Serve Wine Beer

I don't mind a drink, and enjoy drinking around the world at EPCOT or hanging out at the Tune Inn at MGM.... But i'm not entirely sure how I feel about this yet.

In general, I don't have an issue with a glass of wine or beer with dinner, especially at a TS restaurant.....which only has 1 TS meal a day. It ultimately wouldn't be any worse than the people who can hit a monorail to one of the monorail resorts for lunch today.

What worries me more though is the potential for creep of this policy, ESPECIALLY with the logic they used in announcing it.

"It's only logical in a French Restaurant!"

So why wouldn't offering Italian Wines be logical in an Italian Restaurant? Or Champagne, or even Mead.... be logical in a Castle?
Or beers/whiskey/mead type beverages in a Colonial restaurant?

To go a bit further.....

Crystal Palace is based off a French location.... so it's French right?

Or worse....

'It's only logical to serve alcohol in a Tavern'.... so there goes Gaston's and Tortuga.

It's a fine line, and while I don't have a problem with Adults being adults and drinking.... I worry about the tradition of the MK being dry... and the possibility of them deciding to make it much easier to get, throughout the day. I also feel a lot of times like the MK is more cramped and crowded.... and can be hot and miserable more than the other parks.... so I can see alcohol being a bad addition to that mix, even if it's from perfectly rational adults who don't realize how it'll impact them in the florida heat.

How is it any different that Club 33? It's still only one restaurant serving beer and wine and only during dinner.

this has already been address.... But Club 33, while it is located inside Disneyland's Gates.... Is not really a good comparison. Due to the exclusivity of the restaurant, costs, and difficulty getting into the place, It's a lot less likely to lead to problems... or the 'creep' I worry about with BoG.

To make it even more clear. You will never find them excepting the DDP at Club 33, while you can use your DDP credits at BoG. That right there is as good of a showcase of the different clientele and restaurant atmosphere as anything else.

I am not sure why so many posters applauding this change. Most Disneyphiles on the boards are beyond concerned about the changes in the parks (garbage, light bulbs, dirty bathrooms), the removal of old and cherished rides, grouchy CMs, and the horrible manners exhibited by other guests. Now one of THE oldest traditions at the MK is coming to an end, and you are thrilled? I don't get it.

Is nothing sacred? Clearly the WDW brass are all for raking in the cash, but I am honestly surprised that even they have stooped to this. This is a test, and I have every reason to believe that beer carts will be lined up with the Mickey bar carts before long. And you complain about the aggressive parade crowds now?

usually those that are the tipsy ones over at EPCOT aren't aggressive, same goes for DHS as well as AK, they aren't dry parks.. what makes you think they will become aggressive at the MK :confused3

Sometimes when I read a thread I think" man these people do not like Disney". Things change do I always love the change no but in general it's Disney and the happiest place on earth. (at least to me) Disney is a business and they are in business to make money, just as Walt was. But to me most of the time they get it right and when they don't it's still my favorite place on earth!!

Very well said, imo

I've never been a drinker, but I don't begrudge those who do it responsibly.

That said, I'm sad at this news today.

Changes in the park that you mentioned like dirty bathrooms, garbage, light bulbs etc - all effect the OVERALL experience and are a decline in standards.

Serving alcohol in no way compares! :confused3

Because of the umpteen threads that have been on this board that discuss aggressive crowd behavior at the MK parades. Like people standing in front of kids, pushing people, cursing because there are no available places to sit/stand when parades are beginning, when other guests have been parked on the curb for over two hours and any of the above things happen.

Need I go on?

I heard there will be a six pack take out next to liberty tree tavern :rotfl2:

I'm disappointed. I really dislike going around the countries at EPCOT and all I can smell is alcohol. I HATE having my kids around drunkards! Or them having to witness that and me praying for it. Alcohol is the only drug in the U.S. that is legal & it kills innocent people.

Club 33 is a private club. It is not open to the park. You cannot enter or exit the Club without accessing the "public park". It is most assuredly open to the park. Open to the public? No. To the park? Yes.Joe Schmo from Idaho can't just walz in and order a brew. And Joe can't do that at BoG either. We're not talking about Sommerfest here. You have to have an ADR and sit to eat dinner.

And the reason I'm not happy about today's announcement is that I am quite sure that this is simply the thin edge of the wedge. Soon all of the TS restaurants will offer booze. Then the CS restaurants. Finally we'll see carts near some of the attractions.

Booze? No booze here. Just beer and wine. It is easy to construct a slippery slope and portend doom. But how about we wait and see if people having a glass of wine with dinner turns Main Street into Bourbon Street before we start assuming that the Turkey Leg cart in Frontierland will sells shots of Jack Daniels to go with them.

But the difference is you're comparing this to a place where someone can carry around drinks all day. You will be able to drink AT dinner AT BOG, not just walking around MK. Nowhere near the same experience, or even potential for experience.

Blue Bayou in Disneyland has had champagne available for special evenings for quite some time.

I also trust that Disney will instruct their servers in "responsible serving" (to Disney standard) in BOG.

Strangely, I once had a Magic Kingdom photopass CM tell me that due to my Corona tshirt some of my photos wouldn't be on the CD unless I covered the logo with my arms or camera strap. She was right! Some of my photos didn't show up! Seems that they have changed their values somewhat at the Magic Kingdom.

Clearly I think it does effect the OVERALL experience, or else I wouldn't have commented. It's a tradition that is being broken for the sake of cash and that is sad. Also sad? The changes in upkeep standards as a whole.

Let me see if I can explain my visceral reaction to this news in Disboards-speak. For me, beer at the MK is like Cinderella Castle dressed up like a fluffy pink birthday cake! I know people hated that cake because it changed the face of the park. Will serving alcohol directly change the face of the park? No, not directly. It's the idea of the change. The obliteration of an ideal. The end of an era. It points to more change on the horizon.

Is it WWWW (What Walt Would Want)? We really can't guess because he is not here to discuss it. However, I would say that if he did want to serve beer and/or wine at the MK, he would have allowed it initially, and would not have made a specific comment about not wanting beer/wine at the MK.

This is the best post I have read in a long time! I am still laughing...classic!
