Magic is gone-disappointing 3rd DDP experience

I agree with that to a point. But there is also a term, sh*t colored glasses, where if you take on a negative attitude everything snowballs into a downward spiral of negativity.

How's that for a mixed metaphor?

While I agree with you, its a known fact that people who receive bad service/treatment are much more likley to tell someone than those that havent. That said, there has been a bit of a trend in recent years (food quality, service, etc...) that those repeat visitors have reported on often and I am always amazed at how many people feel the need to disagree with someones opinion in that regard.

It sounds to me like the OP just had a run of bad luck. I agree that WDW quality is not the same it was a few years ago - maybe M. Eisner wasn't so bad?

But I also think maybe the op is looking on the bad side of things too. Imean, so you got some bad grapes, that could happen anywhere. It's what happened when you brought it to the attention of the staff that matters. If you just walked away, then that is op's fault. If she brought it to attention of the staff and they did nothing then that's different.

WE know that 'Ohana's is in the process of going back to their old menu. Most people aer very happy that they are bringing back the pineapple bread. I have heard a gazillion posts about how good it it, but op found it bland. These same folks complained heavily about the loss of the shrimp that op found bland.

I think your onto something, but lets face it, a Disney vacation, regardless of what they say in the ads 'aint cheap.'
I think the biggest problem they had was 'not feeling like they got there money's worth.'
I think thats a valid opinion to report back from one example and I would encourage the OP to report that experience to the powers that be.

very good post, tigger :thumbsup2
i know if i was going to ensure i would dislike the dining, i would pick some of those exact restaurants :lmao: (with the exception of LTT ~ it's just too cute & homey for me not to like it. even so, once every few years is enough :) )
now if OP came back saying tutto italia, coral reef, LeCellier, Chefs de France, and Wolfgang Puck Cafe were all abyssmal, i would be concerned (btw, except for TI, we have had at least one meal out of many, many at each that wasn't their best).

OP ~ i hope there were at least some happy moments, & you got to enjoy "quality time" with your family :)

Tho it sounds like the OP had bad dining luck across the board....I do question your choice of restauants????? The ressie's you listed would not be on my list, they seem the be family style and buffets. That being said....DH and I have had the DDP on our last 4 trips,(over 4 weeks total) with only one bad dining experience, but we dine (with ADR's) but avoid buffet restaurants. I do feel in is very important to research your ADR's and sched. 180 days in advance. DH and I sched. our ADR's with food selection and past service in mind. We will only book a family style or buffet for a character experieince, and that is usually limited to 1-2 times per trip for breakfast.

We are going in Sept with free dinning. I have read all the reveiws on many places at Disney. I am going with an open mind. It would be fun to say "no I am not on the dinning plan" and see how you are treated. Could they refuse to take the DDP if you did that, and told them after the meal you were on the dinning plan? Then the next place say yes, and see how things go. We were not on the plan last Sept., and I could not tell in any of the places we ate who was and who wasn"t. I just enjoy not having to cook for a week. I am not fussy, but I will also say something if it is really bad.

Ya know, that's just it. I have "sold" SO MANY families on going to Disney World and the DDP from our community that everyone said I should get a job at Disney. I lived and breathed it! Now I feel like they are going to be so disappointed.
I am going to write to Disney too. I do not expect anything but I do want them to know that they did ruin something wonderful and it is definately "broke".
To be told how much the servers HATE the DDP made us feel like they hated us- the customers. My brother shook his head in disbelief and looked at me "Did she just say what I think she said?"I realize it is definately more paperwork for them because you get a pile of receipts when you pay. It is really confusing as to which is the customers to keep and which is to sign and what you are actually signing for!
On our previous trips we never had a single complaint. Like the previous poster mentioned, every once in a while you'd get a server who was just so-so, but for the most part the servers and food were amazing!

I really do miss the appetizer and gratuity being part of the plan too. It was so nice not to have everything paid for up front and not worry about any extra charges. I disliked carrying around tip money and all those receipts. Also with the food not being very good I felt hungry after a couple of the meals. The appy was a nice way to feel like you were splurging and satisfied that the DDP was such a good value. Plus at several of the restraunts it took a very long time to get our meal. An appy would have helped satisfy and occupy impatient children and Grandpa!
So people are actually trying to say you not having 'a magical vacation' is your fault. hmmmmm, seems they must have been there with you! :rolleyes1
Whatever happened to Disney only hiring folks who genuinely loved the environment? If I want a chain-smoking hag who hates her job for a waitress I will eat at Denny's.
:rotfl:

Jeesh guys! Let's cut the OP some slack - why are we questioning her dining choices? Regardless of where you eat, be it Pecos Bill's or a Signature restaurant, I think we all expect to be satisfied with the quality of food. I don't think the OP was expecting too much - just decent food and service.'

I am usually guilty of the rose colored glasses thing myself - and I'm usually the first one to jump in and defend Disney. But, even I have to admit that the food quality during our last trip in December was the lowest it's been in my 15+ visits. I'm not saying we necessarily had any "bad" meals - but some were a bit dissapointing and not at prior years' levels (Chefs de France is one example).

As far as poor dining experiences tainting your overall trip - dining is a big part of our Disney vacation so if we had that many bad dining experiences then, yes, it would affect our overall perception of our trip. Honestly, as good as our experiences might be at our resort or in the parks, a good dining experience is also very important to our overall perception of our trip. But, everyone's priority list while on vacation is different.

I think we should all just take a breath and step back and realize that it actually might be very possible that the OP has some valid points. We should not have to use 2 TS credits every night or dine at the chefs table at V&A to get good food/service. :sad2:

That is the first I heard of a "pile of receipts". Why are there any more receipts than you usually would get at a restaurant?

I don't think anyone answered this, yet. There are more receipts because of the tip process.

1. Wait staff brings you an itemized recept on which you write the tip. You then tell the server how you are paying for the tip and non-DDP expenses (I also wrote it on the receipt).

2. Wait staff runs the DDP "charge" and either the room charge or another credit card. Out comes a receipt to sign and one to keep for the DDP and one to sign and one to keep for the tip. You end up keeping 3 (itemized, DDP, and tip) and giving back 2 (signed DDP and signed Tip).

As long as you look at the bottom and sign the ones that say Merchant/Restaurant Copy, you'll be fine.

Sorry to hear about your dissappointment OP. I can understand how frustrated you were when you had such good experiences before and now that you had a new family along, things went so badly. :sad2:

I suspect it was a combination of bad luck and the new DDP being only a couple weeks old.

Please keep up the honest reviews. Honest reviews are what make this website valuable. If posters are discouraged from writing anything negative, the site won't be valuable.

I read tons of reviews before we chose our restaurants last time. I read wonderful reports about LTT. We enjoyed it. One poster said that all the restaurants the OP chose had bad reviews, and she should have done her homework. I know LTT had great reviews when I researched it at several different sites.

The food is an important part of the vacation and definately the most expensive part if you are staying at a value resort. There is nothing wrong with stating your opinion that you didn't get your money's worth if that is how you feel. I want to know how others felt about their experience before I go waste my money there.

Disney isn't the perfect vacation for everyone. As time goes by and they continue to squeeze more people in the value resorts the service is bound to go down. It is just too many people to give a magical experience. Anyone who doesn't concede this isn't being fair or very knowledgable. I have felt this way for the last couple of trips! But I keep going back! I am addicted to and still love Disney even though I think it is declining in value and quality!

I guess I need to come and defend myself. I thought that this was a discussion board and that people might actually want to know what families who have recently been to Disney have experienced since the new DDP took place Jan 1.:confused3 My mistake.

As to hating all the places as previous posters have accused me of, they must not have read my entire post. I specifically said that the food was good at Biergarten and 1900 Park Fare. I just felt that overall the quality of food and service has really gone down hill in the last few years. Also to let others know what a server had actually told us. I understand that poor servers are possible at any dining establisment (Disney or not). But I used the DDP in Jan 2005 and Sept. 2006 and both of those times were very good experiences. This time I truly felt that as soon as I told my server we were on the DDP that they were not as friendly or attentive...and we were told as much at Whispering Canyon.

As for my choices in dining, let me say that I have eaten at many of the HIGH END places on previous trips. I fully understand that you can't compare apples to oranges, BUT since these places can't handle EVERY DDP patron that comes to Disney, SOMEBODY has to eat in the other places and might actually want to know what anothers experiences were when they ate there. My ADRs were made in August 2007 for my January 2008 trip so I could have chosen most any place. We decided to try NEW things this time as well as a few old favorites. I think when a customer visits ANY Disney dining establishment they should be able to expect good food and service.

As far as the CS meals, again I realize burgers and fries will NOT be gourmet. As I said in my post, it is only MY OPINION that the quality (taste, temperature, etc.) was not what it was on previous trips. You also get one CS a day on the plan...so at some point your probably going to use them...geesh! I did eat a salad and other things too. Not all were bad, I just mentioned TWO places that I didn't think were as good as they use to be.

Do I base my complete trip on Dining...NO. BUT, it is something that is a very important part of our families vacation. Apparently it must be for other families too or Disney never would have created a Deluxe DDP would they??? These trips are pricey and something we save all year for. We like the fact that Disney offers dining "experiences" that are not a typical, quiet sit down meal. Is it too much to ask for good tasting food and attentive servers? I get that not everyone is a foodie, but our families are, so is it a make or break for us...yes. You don't have to agree or tear us apart. It's just an OPINION.

As for snacks, when I said the plan had pretty much gone back to the way it was before, I was indicating single serve items, scoops of popcorn, bottles of soda, etc as being the norm. Not once did I complain about snacks, I was just passing along what we experienced.

There ARE many more receipts that come with your DDP bill because of the new tipping policy. Some servers have the ones on the left hand side of the folder that need to be signed and explain it to the customer. Others put everything all together and let the customer decifer what needs to be signed.

I did not post to whine about the changes Disney made to the DDP itself as many have done. Again, I thought I would share our opinions and what a server actually told us. My posts were truthful although many have indicated other wise. It's really too bad that some feel the need to turn every post into an argument and make accusations.

Small Town Princess, you can come and share your experiences any time. Everyone that goes may experience the exact same restaurants and get a completely different experience.

Thank you for sharing your families experience at Disney and I am sorry it was disappointing trip for the family.

I liked reading your opinions. We were at WDW 2 weeks ago and dined at several of the same places (Ohana, WCC, LTT) and had fantastic experiences at all of them. Good food, excellent service and we were on the dining plan. It just goes to show that everyone's experience can be different even at the same restaurant on the same day.

Where I do disagree (again just opinion) is with the fact that Disney service and quality have gone downhill. We have been going for many years (1st trip in 1977) and currently go about 3-5 times per year. We have yet to experience the things that others have mentioned. For us the magic is still there 100%. The food is often not the greatest but we dine for the experience more than for the actual food. That can sound really strange to those that dont love all things Disney. ;)

Anyway...I am very sorry that you had disappointments. But I would not decide to never return based on one trip that was not great. Think of all the other things that you love about Disney World and you will hopefully change your mind! :goodvibes

I was told by Disney Rep who investigated this question and AAA Rep who called Disney that Appetizer WAS INCLUDED on the Deluxe Din.Plan, not the Basic Dining Plan...

I also was told that an 18% gratuity was added to the bill automatically now!

Are these 2 facts Correct?

Thanks in Advance!

Probably should go to the source:

http://adisneyworld.disney.go.com/m...cific/eng/nontheme/tickets/08DeluxeDining.pdf

It says appetizer is included, but gratuity is not included.

jerseygal: Fact one is, in fact, a fact. The Deluxe Dining Plan does include an appetizer for each person at each meal.
Fact two depends - an 18% service charge is automatically added to the bill of any party of six or more diners, and of any party using the Disney Dining Experience card (20% discount). If your party rmeets neither of these criteria, there will be calculations of 18% and 20% of your check, on your check, for your convenience - but you get to decide the actual amount/% of the tip you leave.

It amazes me how things can be so different for different people. Yet, I know they are. We just got back from vacation too. We were there from Jan 17th-23rd. We were on the deluxe plan so there was some difference there. As far as the value, we probably saved a few hundred bucks but we were stuffed. I did enjoy the plan but unsure if I would do it again. I have to say that Disney is all about the food for us. I literally plan our days around our meals. I did change some of our restaurants after reading bad reviews here. On the other hand, that doesn't always make me change my mind. I understand your thing with Whispering Canyon - our first time there was 2003. We loved it - then it gradually wore off. Our last time there was Jan 07 with a group of 15 - it took 3 hours for our meal!! Not to mention 3 hours of noise. This time our party of 3 went next door to Artist Point while 11 of them ate at Whispering Canyon. I missed being with the group but we did enjoy a nice and relaxing dinner. (However, the meal still took 2 hours - waiter kept disappearing.)
We tried many of the same places as you this time too. We had Liberty Tree at lunch - it was wonderful. A true hidden gem.
1900 breakfast - our first time there and like you said - it was wonderful!
Crystal Palace breakfast - LONG WAIT - Breakfast was ok - server was wonderful but think we'll go back to sticking to lunch.
Ohana - food was good but not as good as in the past. I just can't seem to have a bad meal there. Our shrimp were wonderful - they were just stingy with them.
We switched our Mama Melrose ressies to Teppan Edo - very good choice in my opinion - loved the old Japanese just wasn't planning on doing it this time since we were going to be at Hollywood Studios that day - so again we arranged our day around the restaurant and didn't go to the Studios until after our dinner at the Concourse Steakhouse. Concourse - now that's another story - I felt that it was just ok. (Could be because the night before we were at the California Grill!) California Grill was wonderful but next time - I think we'll just order sushi.
We ate at many, many places and all our opinions are different. That's what makes this a wonderful country to live in - We can all speak our peace!!!
Don't let the bad meals or dining plan get you down, I have a feeling that'll change next year anyway - Think of it this way - it just gives you more reasons to try something new next time, maybe without the plan.
Like I said - we would probably pay out of pocket next time and eat what we want.
