Magic in the Kingdom 2012! BIG 2/16/2014 FINAL UPDATE!

Awww... thanks Courtney. :goodvibes I love my sons but they don't "get" the Disney magic either. Never did. Sometimes we have to put up with these shortcomings in our family members. ;):lmao::rotfl: I hope one day you can open her eyes to it. I have visions of going to Disney with my sons if they ever take their own kids one day. It might just be a pipedream..... but I'm thinking if Star Wars Land ever happens, they might just get sucked in.

Maybe one day your mom will want to share the magic with you and a child of yours? :)

My BF's sister and brother-in-law came along with their 2 year old in January and there is nothing better than seeing the Disney magic through the eyes of a little one! So if there's ever a good time to attempt to convert your sons and my mom that will definitely be it! :rotfl2:

In my case, that's definitely several years down the road still though!

Okay… let's get to the Disney part!!!! :rotfl:

Yeah, I think we'll try for a Beach trip next summer maybe. I wish we weren't so landlocked. :worried:When we lived in MS, it was easy to hop over to Pensacola or Gulf Shores for a daytime trip! It's soooo hard to walk away from that!

No hurry. Disney's not going anywhere! :goodvibes

Now that mine are older, I'm thinking I might have to borrow a little kid to take sometime soon though!

LOL, I'm working on the Disney photos. I had over 1K shots that day. :cool2:

I hear you on being landlocked though. Welcome to MY world. I've lived in Missouri all my life. Not only is it landlocked, but it's not even close to anything interesting.

Yeah… these cornfields around me are just NOT very amusing… We have traveled to the Zoo in St. Louis though- so Missouri isn't ALL bad! :rolleyes1

I'm trying to do some research on the Wisconsin Dells area… I'm a little confused by the area, but at least it would be water for my kids! :confused3

Well, at least you didn't come to KC for our zoo. It has improved a lot in recent years, but that's still not saying much. We love the St. Louis zoo too. I've avoided St. Louis a lot as an adult since I drove through there SO many times on my to and from college. I think I'm ready to give it a good try again. Especially with Timmy heading down to Rolla for school. It's "only" 90 minutes farther to go on into St. Louis. We're talking about dropping him off in August, then going on to St. Louis for a couple days, then back through Rolla to take him to dinner (and out to buy everything we forgot to send with him in the first place) before heading home.

Sunday June 9th:

OK, who's ready to head to Disney World! OK, so it's only one day. But that's all I could get excited about in the crazy Florida heat........

aIMG_0365_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

I had printed out directions through mapquest, but mostly ended up relying on the navigation program on my phone. I know my way around KC so well I had never used it. I was a sales rep in town for many many years before cell phones and GPS so learned my way around the hard way. But I have to say, it was pretty handy to have it heading through Florida.

Since I was driving, Katie manned the camera. She talked me into pulling over on our way out of town for this shot:

aIMG_0376_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

I loved that perspective so much that I'm thinking of trying it at sunrise one day on our next visit.

We listened to Disney tunes most of the way there. I had just added the Mary Poppins stage show soundtrack to my phone, and we both really enjoyed that. I also have a 125 song CD set that I added to my phone. We definitely never want for Disney tunes at our house!

Eventually Katie was able to add these shots:

aIMG_0424_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

aIMG_0428 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

aIMG_0434_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

And while I've taken this shot before myself (with Drew driving), Katie enjoyed getting to take one herself:

aIMG_0444_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

I think it was right around 1:00 when we arrived at our home for the next 2 nights.

aIMG_0468 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

aIMG_0469_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

aIMG_0470 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

And since I never remember to take room shots before messing the place up...... I did it this time.

aIMG_0476_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

aIMG_0480_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

I took a moment to organize my things. We were heading for the Magic Kingdom with plans to stay until EMH closing at 1 AM. Since we hadn't had lunch, we stopped for a quick bite to eat before leaving. Not very exciting, but I wanted to share something and Katie really wanted pizza.

aIMG_9878 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

Eating lunch was merely an excuse for having dessert. I missed the tie dye cheesecake when we stayed at AoA last year so it was high on my list for this quick stop.

aIMG_9879 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

Katie doesn't care for cheesecake, and instead wanted a sugar cookie. I wasn't going to take a picture since it's not ...... well..... very exciting to look at!

aIMG_9880 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

From there we headed out to the bus stop, where the bus gods were kind and we stepped right onto a nearly empty bus ready to depart. It didn't take long to get here. We entered the park right around 2:30.

Now those of you who have read along on past trip reports know that we have a favorite Fairy Godmother we always try to find. I knew we wouldn't get to meet her this time since all Fairy Godmother meet and greet sets would be done for the day before we got to the park. But the word on the street was that we might be able to catch a glimpse of her in the afternoon parade. And with the current parade going away next year, we decided it would be great to catch the parade on our way into the park, and hopefully get to wave at our favorite Fairy Godmother. :goodvibes

We also wanted to visit the Princesses in Town Square Theater before heading up Main Street. So our first stop was to grab a princess fastpass. The fastpass gods were on our side, giving us a return time of 3:35. That would work out perfectly for us after the parade.

On our way to the fastpass machine, we spotted Mary Poppins. But she wasn't alone......... she was with Mr. Penguin! SCORE! I had Katie's autograph book in my bag and he was one of the few we didn't get signed on our last trip. So I jumped in line while Katie got the fastpasses. Once she rejoined me, the character attendant surfaced to break the bad news....... Mary and Mr. Penguin's line was closed. I asked if they'd be back out and all he would say was to check the times guide. I thought that was a pretty good hint that the answer was no, and that he didn't want to break the news. I checked Kenny the Pirate's web site a bit later and confirmed we were indeed out of luck. Sigh. Another day. I guess we have to have some spots in the book left to try for next time........

We wanted to be sure to have curbside spots for the parade, so headed over in front of Guest Relations to sit and wait. Yes, it was hot. But at least we hadn't been out in it all day so that helped. Unfortunately the parade was coming from Frontierland, so we had a bit longer to wait. But it was really worth it. We hadn't sat to watch the afternoon parade since our 2010 trip. That time it was bitter cold in the middle of the afternoon. This time it was..... slightly warmer. ;) As seems to be the case any more with any parade at Disney, we did hand to hand combat holding our 2 spots. Honestly, if I can sit out in the hot sun and keep my spot, they can too. Katie was on the curb. My bag was next to her on the curb with me behind it. I hadn't decided if I was sitting or standing, but didn't want to stand up last minute and surprise the people behind me, so I stood there. Well, don't you know.... some lady came up and sat in the approximate 1" of space between my bag and the street. Uh..... I don't think so. For a minute I didn't think she was going to move either.

Before too long the marching band came by:

We have never watched the parade from Town Square, and I have to say I absolutely LOVED it. The whole thing just takes on a different feel amid the turn of the century charm in that area.

I'm in an online scrapbook group that sends out an email every time a group member has a birthday. Well, they also send out an email when the Fab 5 have birthdays. So just that morning I had seen an email telling me it was Donald's birthday. So as he walked the parade route, I yelled out "Happy Birthday Donald" and got this:

More Fairy Godmother coming in the next installment! :cool1:

And I'm thinking I might need to act on this interest in photography with Katie. She seemed to have my camera in her hands a LOT on this trip. But I'm glad she's showing some interest.

I'm also really excited about a new parade coming. This parade has been mostly the same for far too long. One of the things I'm most excited about seeing at DLR is a different parade!

Loving the parade pictures. and the Pop ones too. I still love that resort. It's now been 2 years since I have stayed there.

So yep, there she was. And our mutual friend had been right. It was the right Fairy Godmother!

Once the parade was over, we had to swim upstream to get to Town Square Theater. We decided to run in and visit the head cheese himself before using our princess fastpass.

IMG_0112 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

IMG_0115_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

I did make one new princess gown for this visit, so after our visit with Mickey, we ducked into the restroom so Katie could change.

When we came back out and headed for the princess line, we saw that the standby wait was posted at 120 minutes. Yeah, right. We were inside and saw that there were only around 10 people in that standby line. I'm sure they have a huge influx after the parade, but 120 minutes? That seemed more like manipulating the crowds than anything else. I really think those numbers are less honest than ever before.

Katie had promised to go take a photo in the Rose Garden with the castle in the background before changing and starting to do rides, so that's where we intended to head next. But when we came out the exit........ it was raining. Oops. She didn't mind if she got wet, but I didn't really want photos of a rain-spotted gown. As we stood on the porch there in the hub discussing our options...... all of a sudden it stopped raining. We had completely missed the late afternoon Florida storm! We couldn't have timed that any better. So we headed up Main Street.

Loving the parade pictures. and the Pop ones too. I still love that resort. It's now been 2 years since I have stayed there.

Thanks Jen! I really had lost track of how long it had been since watching the parade. It really was nice to just sit and watch it again.

And being back at the Pop did feel very much like being at home. But I hate to admit it, but it's also starting to feel a little..... boring. :scared1: OK, maybe not boring, but not exciting. I did the math and it's the 6th time we've stayed there since January 08. But AoA is out. And I am just spoiled by staying at resorts with dedicated bus service. So I honestly don't know what my next choice would be. I guess it's good that we're heading west for a change of pace.

We've stayed 4 times and now I think I will enjoy it more when we do go back. I do want to try other resorts out too. I doubt I'll be going back to LM rooms too, unless Claire really begs for it someday.

The gown was just on over her shorts and t-shirt, so we just stepped aside to take it off. I packed it into my tote bag and we discussed our next step. I wanted to go put it in a locker and travel light the rest of the night. Katie wanted to do BTMRR as soon as possible. So we agreed that she would go make a run for fastpasses and I would make a run to the locker and we'd meet right back there at the Rose Garden. She had her phone in case questions came up and went on her way.

So I hadn't gone more than a few steps when I stopped in my tracks. There they were........ the Dumbo popcorn buckets I had seen here on the DIS and was absolutely determined to take home with me. But I didn't just want one..... we also wanted to take one home for Katie's friend McKenna. So I needed 2. I looked down at my tote bag. And camera bag. Oh, and I had my tripod bag too. And I did what any self-respecting Dumbo fan would do. I got in line and ordered 2 Dumbo popcorn buckets! I couldn't carry 2 with popcorn in them, so I asked them to hold the popcorn on 1. Then as I started to walk away, I saw all the people in line behind me and told them I changed my mind and wanted the other popcorn. And promptly gave it to the next person in line.

From there all I had to do was make it down Main Street to the lockers. No easy feat, but at least I could mark "buy 2 Dumbo popcorn buckets" off my list and not worry about missing them. I fully intended to put both into the locker, but he was just so stinkin cute I had to keep one to show Katie.

It felt great to ditch some things and go light heading back up Main Street. Who could resist stopping to take this photo?

IMG_0177_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

Maybe it was my walk down Main Street, but long about then I was feeling really hot. Almost overheated hot. I was starting to second guess my decision to pass on the sunscreen. I felt the sun on my neck and wondered if I had made a foolish mistake. So I ducked into the stores along Main Street to make my way back up to the Rose Garden. She was just as excited as I had been to find Dumbo!

IMG_0181_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

Little did I know we'd have so much fun with him that night. It's like he was the 3rd member of our group and turned out to be well worth the effort to lug him around.

I told Katie I was feeling overheated and I just needed to sit down inside somewhere, so we headed for this guy's place......

IMG_0184_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

I got us a drink to share and it was fun to sit there in a cool environment for a bit to regroup before heading out for some fun.

Since we had Dumbo along for a ride, and had fastpasses in hand for BTMRR, we decided to head for the Dumbo ride knowing that his fastpasses were not connected to the regular fastpass system.

IMG_0188_1 by mom2rtk, on Flickr

We headed for Big Top Souvenirs and did a little shopping while waiting for our Dumbo fastpasses to open up.

I honestly have no idea where we'll stay when we go back. I could only be talked into LM again if it was a shorter stay. I thought about it for this trip because it was only 2 nights, but it was close to $200 the first night since it hit right after the summer price bump and it was a weekend. Plus, it was not eligible for the room only discount. So I just couldn't justify it.

Is that an Art of Animation t-shirt? Didn't know they made resort tee's.

We're fans of Sonny Eclipse as well! One we love the food at Cosmic Rays and two its always good for a few laughs.

You will love the parade at Disneyland. I wish you could have seen their non Christmas one. They do a great job of changing up the parades every few years. WDW seems to get Disneyland/DCA's leftovers on parades. Have you ever seen the DCA Pixar Play Parade? If not then you have to make time for it!

Your mini TR was the perfect "splash down" for our return from Disney tonight. Beautiful photos of the shells, critters, family, sunsets, parade, etc.

I had a college-age son in absentia from part of this trip, as you did from yours -- and it was sad to take photos in favorite Florida spots without him. A few were too wrenching, so I skipped those photo ops and started new traditions.

Meanwhile, my youngest son (age 10) is no longer interested in meeting characters. I spent too much time being nostalgic - or doing as you mentioned and thinking ahead to a time when I may be lucky enough to come back with a grandchild! I need to evolve and focus on the present rather than the past or future.

Looking forward to more from your mini trip and December trip, too!

Sharla

I like how Katie changed into her Dumbo shirt once you had your little friend along. Lol

Also, all of her shirts are adorable, where did you find them? Or are they all from the parks?

Also, I love the new Cindy dress! this is the one you made to match the "makeover" Cinderella isn't it?

You know I love that Dumbo bucket.
I love your AoA short and it makes me regret that I didn't get one. Now that I see it on someone it looks nicer than I thought it did on the rack. And Katies shirt is so cute. Where did she get that?

Yes, that's an AoA t-shirt. I was back and forth on getting one the entire trip and picked it up on our way out. I like the subtle purple on purple. But it was $30 and made from very flimsy cotton. But I sure do like it and am glad I pulled the trigger. I know I saw Poly t-shirts when we walked through there the next night, so some of the resorts have their own t's. I've never seen one for Pop though. I wish they would do that. I'd be all over that.

Sitting there at Cosmic Ray's..... knowing we were finally in the Magic Kingdom....... cooling off before heading out again......... was really just awesome. :goodvibes

So if they don't have a Christmas party at DL, then the only DL parade would be the Christmas one? I'd be really disappointed. I really want to see Soundsational. I've never seen a Pixar parade. And brace yourself....... I probably won't. We're just not big Pixar fans. Now before I get strung up here....... I did see Monsters U over the weekend and enjoyed it. I just don't feel the affinity for the Pixar movies that I do for the traditional Disney movies.

Sharla

Aww Sharla,

I do know exactly what you're feeling. I used to always take my tripod and take a full family photo on the beach. This was the first time in a while I didn't do that. I didn't even try to take one of the 4 of us because that just seemed to accentuate who was missing. :( So glad you started some new traditions though!

And what a bummer that your baby bailed on the characters at the same time. Doesn't that figure? At least Katie was still willing to have some character fun to help me get over it.

My greatest therapy for all of it is scrapbooking. But I'm guessing you're right there with me. You know, based on your screen name and all. :) I'm really anxious to get going on scrapping this trip. Once Timmy leaves in the fall, it might be even harder.

Thanks for the kind words on the Cindy gown. Yes, this was my stab at replicating the new park gown for Cinderella.

We got the Dumbo shirt at Big Top Souvenirs when I realized Katie had on the same t-shirt she wore when we visited Storybook Circus on our trip in December. :lmao: When I realized that, I did what any self-respecting scrapbooker would do........ I went and found her a new shirt! :)

Her and I each have a pretty nice accumulation of Disney shirts. Most of them actually came from the Disney store. It was so nice when she finally started fitting the adult size t-shirts. It had been a while since she fit the kid sizes and was sort of in no-man's land. I think I have more from the parks than Katie does. I try to buy one each trip, although I never found one this time that I liked. But I'm going to make sure I get one at DLR this December.

You know I love that Dumbo bucket.
I love your AoA short and it makes me regret that I didn't get one. Now that I see it on someone it looks nicer than I thought it did on the rack. And Katies shirt is so cute. Where did she get that?

Dumbo was our new buddy. :) And his ears folded up nicely so he and his twin actually fit in our checked bag. My friend Kim says she found some plastic popcorn boxes we should be able to sit inside of them too. I had intended to ask for some clean ones to take home to use, but forgot. But the plastic ones will be perfect.

I agree that the AoA shirts didn't look good on the hanger. They look very cheap too (except for the price tag!) which is why I was back and forth so much.

Katie's Little Mermaid shirt was from the Disney Store. I have one too. I'm just not allowed to wear it at the same time she is. :p We both like the scoop neck on it. If you're asking about the Dumbo shirt, as I said earlier in this reply, it was from Big Top Souvenirs.
