Magic in NYC~June 2, 2012

I think I am making our pirate shirts. I bought plain black tees on clearance and then bought these rhinestone pirate/skull/crossbones iron-on transfers at Michaels. I am adding a Minnie Mouse ribbon bow to the top of the head. So far, it looks cute but we'll see after I actually make them. DH is just getting a pirate patch (also found at Michael's) on the pocket of his shirt. Just been too darn busy to even think about any of it! I knew I should've done all of this in the summer when I had time!

Just curious, does anyone know how this sailing and the other NY cruises selling?

I have been checking out the cruises to see how prices have gone up. This cruise has not seen much of an increase, so I am thinking that it is not selling as well as later in June, probably because there are not that many schools that are out by 6/2. This same cruise later in June is almost $1700 more.

I've got my Pirate Outfit ready!

PirateOutfit_lowres.jpg

Striped shirt, black pants and black boots all purchased at Kohl's, on sale AND with a 30 percent discount coupon! Those are $89.99 boots which I got for $44!! The hat with Goofy ears purchased coming out of the Pirates of the Carribbean Ride! And did I mention that I'm LOVING my boots!

Hi Everyone!

Another VERY QUIET week on this thread has flown by. We are now
arg-3-50-trans.gif
arg-5-50-trans.gif

weeks away from our Magical Disney sailing out of New York City!

Leaving for WDW Thursday morning! Going to the MNSSHP that evening. First time for that. Can't wait! Boarding the Magic on Saturday. I'm planning on taking lots of pictures so for the rest of our LONG 35 week wait, I'll be dropping them in here for some excitement boosters!! :rotfl2:

Seems like some people on the main threads and also on the one for this coming week are having meltdowns over something I think is nuts to have a meltdown over. So here goes so it doesn't come as a surprise to anyone on this sailing.

Seems DCL is now putting a letter in your cabin on the day your board about tipping. Basically it says that they will automatically charge your room $12 a day per person in your cabin for your main server, assistant server, head server and cabin steward. A form and envelopes will be provided later in the week and should you wish to adjust these amounts up or down, you may do so. It also reminds you that room service is not included in that amount nor is Palo so if you order room service or eat at Palo, you should tip at the time of service.

So I was confused why everyone is mad about this? It's the same as it has always been, except now instead of getting the exact same letter on Wednesday, they give it to you when you board! The amount is EXACTLY what their website suggests for tips, it is just worded a little differently.

Here's the breakdown:

Main Dinning Server for a 7 day cruise they suggest $28 total
Assistant Server for a 7 day cruise they suggest $21 total
Head Server for a 7 day cruise they suggest $7 total
State Room Host for 7 day cruise they suggest $28 total

Keep in Mind this is per person in the stateroom. This adds up to $84 per person or $12 PER DAY PER PERSON. Just because they place a letter telling you they are automatically doing this doesn't change the amounts.
You still are offered the chance to adjust it up or down. So I don't know why it matters when you receive a letter talking about tips? :confused3

Oh well, now that I have that off my chest!! Hope everyone is having a great weekend! Oh, and I just realized...our letter will be a little different because we'll be tipping for EIGHT days!! WOO HOO!!! Eight fun filled days!!!

Have a great trip Maria! I can't wait to see your pictures.

I saw the huge thread on the tips. They are never going to make everyone happy. On our last cruise, I prepaid our tips. It was nice to not have to worry about them on board.

I know right! LOL. Why can't people just relax and enjoy themselves. What difference does it make, it all boils down to the same exact amount of money. Whether you prepay or you get it charged to your room, still comes out of your pocket one way or another! I decided that the only ones really upset are probably the people who were planning on cheating their servers out of the tips! Why else would they care? :confused3

I'm planning on having a great time! My DH has been working way too many hours and he really needs a vacation. I'm just glad to be spending some time with him when he's actually awake!! Kid you not, he's up by 5:30 am, goes to work and gets back around 11 pm and goes to bed. CANNOT WAIT for Thursday!

Maria, you must be so excited! Have a spectacular trip!! I can't wait to hear all about it and see the pictures. It sounds like it's going to be an extremely needed trip for your DH. Wowsa, that's a lot of hours to put in each day! My DH is currently doing close to those hours as well, all in the hopes that one day, he'll be able to make the one job his only job.

I didn't read the thread about the tips, as I have stayed off the main board lately and just check in here and on a few TR. IMO, people just seem to be acting differently lately on here. Just more snippier and sometimes downright not nice! It's almost getting like the Cruise Critic boards if you are a newbie! I'm with you about the tips. I bet you are right about the cheating as why else would it really matter when you get the "letter"? From what I've read, it's common practice to have to pay tips ahead on other cruise lines. I'm hoping to be able to pay them in advance like Kristi does. Less worries!

Anyway, have a super fun and super safe trip! :cool1::cheer2:

I know the answer to this! Here is the rental website!

Thank you! :thumbsup2

Brook - I think I got my pirate shirt for our last cruise on Amazon and I got one for Steve on ebay.

I found one for me at Target, but I will be hunting Amazon and eBay for Joe. Hopefully I can find a steal after Halloween.

Just curious, does anyone know how this sailing and the other NY cruises selling?

Our sailing has a "lead rate" (TA talk for a "discount") on it for the Category 9B Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom at $1600 per person, and the Category 5B Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom at $2184 per person based on double occupancy. I am not sure how much of a deal this is...but generally Disney starts with this lead rate for a while it seems, then a discount. I've seen the Mexican Rivera ones go all over the map-and as we all know it went Kids Sail Free again recently. (It also has had a TA rate on it and more).

I'm hoping it doesn't sell well AT ALL and we all get deals!

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! I can't wait to see your pictures! I hope your husband finds much rest and relaxation and can return to the grind refreshed. :goodvibes

As for the tipping thing - I don't get it either. I haven't read the thread, but just from what you posted - what is the difference? :confused3 I'm guessing your assumptions are correct, that people only get angry because they were planning on not spending that much. :sad2:

I haven't read the tip thread either, but it sounds like Disney is going to automatically charge the tips rather than making you come down to guest services to do it. I'm sure it's viewed as taking the control over tipping out of our hands and making it "mandatory".

My thoughts...

1. You can always stop at guest services and adjust the amount up or down.
2. It reduces the number of people stopping at guest services.
3. I don't have to stop at guest services unless I had outstanding service and want to tip more.
4. I wonder if those who normally tip more will just skip guest services all together since they can. I hope it doesn't negatively impact the servers etc. (I doubt it will, but unless my service was spectacular, I don't know that I'd take the time to go to guest services unless I absolutely had to).

I think it's a positive move on Disney's part. Anything that makes my cruise easier is a winning situation in my book! So many people are resistant to change. Poor Disney. They have a reputation of listening to their guests (think about the "BYOB" policy) so I'm sure they will be bombarded with e-mails.

I will report back with my findings after my cruise. I personally think it's fine. It's not really that different from our last DCL cruise. I remember getting a letter and a form that you could just fill out how much tip you wanted to give to each person. Guest services had like a drop in mailbox you could just stop by and drop it in no later than some point Thursday, and I believe Friday, your envelopes with cards that showed how much you were tipping each server was delivered to your cabin for you to give to your wait staff and cabin steward. I figure they probably will do the same thing. If you wish to adjust up or down, you'll just be able to drop it off by a certain time.

I helped DD pack her things and her DD's things today. They are pretty much ready! Tomorrow I'll help my dad finish his packing. DH is on his OWN! He'll be packing around midnight Wednesday or into Thursday AM depending on how you look at it. :rotfl:

Cameras are packed too! Can't forget those! VERY important. Got mats for frames that we will drop off at guest services with Sharpies and candy for the VIPs to autograph. First time doing that too. Didn't know you could. DD will be doing a room makeover for Tori shortly after her 2nd birthday and we thought it would be fun to have a nice framed photo of her from the cruise with all the character autographs around the mat. So many things to think about! Hope I'm not forgetting anything important.

Just wanted to wish Maria and her family a safe trip tomorrow, Bon Voyage!

Are all you guys on the NYC Planning Thread too? Lots of chatter over there about how they are getting to port.

Have a great trip Maria!!!!

Just checkin in...

Welcome back Maria!! pixiedust:

How was it? Hopefully you are back safe and sound! Tell us all about it when you get settled! popcorn::

Hope everyone else is doing well too!

Hi Everyone!

We are back safe and sound. Spent Sunday unpacking and doing laundry. Yesterday I went up to DD's house and helped her unpack and sort through all our FE gifts. Final night on the ship we just threw things into bags and things went wherever they fit! LOL!

Cruise Report! It was wonderful! The best cruise ever. Even though the Sail Away Party was moved indoors because of the rain and the first night and first day was so rocky. We hit 20 foot waves. Let's just say the line at Guest Services picking up anti seasick pills was huge. Even my husband and daughter who NEVER get seasick were feeling it. I was one of those poor people in line getting them some pills. DD was fine on Sunday, but DH just layed in bed all day because he wasn't feeling well. I ended up buying some Dramamine they had in the gift shop and that helped him. Either that or the seas did calm down by dinner time! Oh, and I did learn that if you get to an elevator and there are cast members standing in front of a door that doesn't open, it's because someone got sick and they were cleaning it. They are like, "You don't want to go in this one."

If any of you are on Facebook, I posted a ton of pictures on my page and also shared my DD's albums on my page as well.

Anyway, when we got to the port on Saturday we decided to ask if there were any upgrades available and the 2 bedroom suite was open. So we got it! It was perfect for us. The "kids" bedroom had two lower twin beds and also an upper berth. We put my DD and granddaughter in there. It had a full bathroom and a walk in closet. The living room had a queen size sofa bed, so we had my dad sleep there. The master bedroom was a king sized bed, huge walk in closet. The bathroom had a jacuzzi tub and then a separate toilet area with a nice big shower. It was awesome! The mini fridge came stocked with soda and we got a full case of bottled water and a welcome fruit bowl. Concierge level really spoils you. Every afternoon around 3:30 they would deliver yummy treats! When we sailed away from St. Thomas they had a private Concierge Party, with drinks and yummy eats! They even had those Rice Krispy Ears for the kids and kids at heart (um...yes I ate one of them...I love those things!) What fun that was.

The one thing I learned about cabin changes and upgrades at the port is that it does pose a small problem with FE gifts. We had several people upgrade or their cabins were switched for unknown reasons. Most Cabin Hosts were really nice about it. They posted signs on the doors or left the signs that people posted on the doors, "We have moved to cabin # , signed DisName." Plus the people that moved delivered their FE gifts early. I delivered mine right away and put my new cabin number on there and as soon as we boarded I went to our FE organizer's room and posted a note on her door that we had upgraded. A few people must have missed the we moved memo though. I went down and left a note on the old door on Sat. I went down on Sunday just to check, and the note was gone and there was a gift just lying on the floor. I found the Cabin Host and asked him where the note was, and he was so rude, he claimed that someone was in the cabin so he took the note down! I went to the front desk on Monday and was told the room was empty. So I checked the hall a few times throughout the trip and would find things just lying in front of the door. That guy also never left my DD's DVC Member Gift in her Cabin nor my Dad's Castaway gift in his cabin. When we upgraded we could only upgrade one cabin and we had to keep the second cabin, so technically, my DD was still in that cabin and we had a key for her the entire time, and he never left those things in that cabin. Maybe he was mad that he was losing out on a tip?

Anyway, where I'm going with this is that if there is no Fish Extender hanging from a fish, it's a pretty good indication that the person you are leaving a gift for is no longer in that cabin. Lesson learned here from this experience. I'm going to have a list on my door of any cabin changes. So please check my list if you have any questions and be sure to make my cabin stop number one if you have a change!

Okay, moving on. The food was wonderful but the meals would take about two hours. Which is fine if you are adults with older children. But it really was a LONG time to sit there with an almost two year old. If you have really little ones, make sure to bring things to keep them busy during the meal. It was a long time between courses. We had crayons and coloring books and blank coloring paper, and little toys to keep Tori busy. She really was a good girl considering how long she had to sit there.

The shows were amazing! Don't miss them! That's all I'm saying!

If you have a little girl make sure to head right over to Guest Services to ask about the Alice and Mad Hatter Tea Party. Tori LOVED it. They hold those at 4 pm on sea days.

While you are at Guest Services, be sure to drop off a photo mat or pillow cases for autographing. We dropped off two mats with Sharpies and some candy for the "VIPs". It must be in a bag that can close or a ziplock type of bag. They have a form that they tape to the bag with your name and cabin number. They ask you who you want to have sign it. I just said, EVERYONE one of the characters on the ship. On final night the autographed items are delivered to your room. The mat was signed by: Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Chip, Dale, Snow White, Dopey, Tiana, Cinderella, Aurora, Stitch, Lilo, Belle, and Pluto!

Castaway Cay was beautiful. We did get a cabana and it was totally worth every penny. LOVED it.

So I'm ending this trip report with a picture of the view from inside a cabana, and I sure hope I didn't bore anyone. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

Welcome back Maria. I checked out of your photos on FB. I am so missing my cabana - and hope that I can get one for the June cruise.

So cool that you were able to upgrade to the suite. It looks beautiful.
