Magic Christmas Cruise 2010 (Dec 18th - 29th) - PART II

OK, opinions, please --

Trying to figure out the logistics for the hanging of three stockings Christmas Eve. We are in a Nav Cat 7. We would like to hang them in the part of the cabin near the bed (away from the sitting area where DD6 will be sleeping). Are there knobs on the closets that will allow for hanging? :confused3 Any suggestions where were could put them? I have 2 Command hooks, but was hoping to use them in the bathroom.

Thanks!

Caryn

I don't have any other idea but the Command hooks. That's what I used last time.

I signed up my dh and my dd13 for the regatta in St. Maarten so they will be joining some of you. My girls like to have alone time with their dad since he travels so much so this should be good. Again, another surprise!

Has anyone seen any paddleboard available on any of the islands? Last time we were in Aruba my dh and dd did it and loved it.

miatamel - that incident is very much in my mind regarding St. Thomas. As it will be a Sunday, the day after Christmas, and our being the only ship slated to be at the dock, I think it should be way less crowded than it can be. Because of the news, though, I wrote off the Coral World excursions and ones near by immediately. I'd love to do St. John, but think getting there is too involved with DD6. We are going to do the Magens Beach excursion for now.

I am hoping to enjoy Charlotte Amalie more than I did last time -- it was way too crowded and touristy (mid 1990's).

Very nice of you to offer, Dagny

I hate not to see places I'll never see (most likely) again but wonder if this would be the day to enjoy a quiet ship instead of an excursion?

I often think about what people think about St. Louis when they read the local papers.. :headache:

I think excursions are safe... Just always use common sense when traveling, anywhere. :thumbsup2

We will be on the regatta and I have a DD who is 14 and I know she would love to have more teens on board. I don't think I have seen any paddleboard excursions but we are going kayaking in Martinique.

Does your DD know about the cruise? You should have her join the teen thread. There are several 14 & 15 year old girls on the thread.

No, she doesn't know about the cruise. It's a surprise, hopefully it will be until we sail! But, I want her to meet new friends early on. That usually sets the pace for the rest of the cruise.

Hopefully it will stay a surprise. I could never surprise my kids since I talk about the cruise and the DIS boards all day long.:rotfl2: We are trying to plan a teen meet on embarkation day so hopefully she can meet some teens there. Since DD isn't bringing a friend on this trip she is definitely looking for other teens to hang out with.

I'm a latecomer to this cruise/thread so sorry if this has already been discussed, but Cruise Critic today has an article on St. Thomas.

I wouldn't let a random event like that alter our plans. That's a pretty early port call and you might want to make a short visit, then back to the ship. And of course, weather is always a factor.

We plan to go to Magen's Bay on our own for a relaxing day on one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. It has great facilities and a safe sandy swimming beach. St. Thomas is the only port call on this cruise that we have visited before. We are really excited to be able to return to Magen's Bay. And if the Magic is the only ship in port, the beach could be even nicer than last time and less crowded.

BTW, I am amazed by the wealth of information here. How do people know that we are the only ship in port that day... :worship:

Oh, I know. I'm just from a very small town (6000) in a very rural state so not much goes on. I'm not naive or scared--been to NYC several times, along with Chicago, SF, Stockholm, etc etc--but I've always felt prepared and well read. This came about so quickly and there was so much else I wanted to do--FE stuff, magnets, pirate outfits, clothes, Harry Potter world--on top of normal everyday stuff that I have neglected to read up thoroughly on where we are going. I would like to make the "right" decisions on what we choose to do at port and right now all I've done is what Disney has told me to do (!).

DH is certainly no help. Again, his priorities: 1. Hardware stores 2. Cigars 3. Sleep.

We can pair up our husbands -- he is on a cigar crusade as well :rotfl:

I think I am letting my slight prejudice influence me more than my normal. I am a huge BVI fan. I really had a strong opinion of Charlotte Amalie my previous trip, so much so I'd have been more than happy if the ship went to Tortola instead of St. Thomas. It is the only stop I am 'eh' about. I am hoping to change my opinion on this trip.

Cool links, thanks. Wow! Looks like we are alone pretty much the whole trip except for St. Maarten.
Do you mind telling your reason for the strong reaction to Charlotte Amalie?

We just got some baby suction cups with hooks at the dollar store. (Atcually had like 10 of 3 different sizes) for the stockings. Had 3 bigger ones to use for bathing suits and two medium ones for whatever else we will need them for.

That works, too, Nick -- thanks!

Miatamel -- the NCL Seaward had been to Aruba, Curacao, Tortola and then St. Thomas. I think it was the relative quaintness/quietness/not-so-commercialized-ness of my previous three ports that the massive (in comparison) Charlotte Amalie abruptly took away the laid-back feeling. (I hate crowds.) Quickly left the town for the Doubloon and snorkling and got the feeling back pretty quickly :thumbsup2. Nothing too concrete, I just would not go out of my way to get to St. Thomas when there are so many other places I want to go out there. Did that make any sense? :confused3

Caryn

That sounds like a plan, Melanie. A goal in St. Maarten is to hit both La Casa del Habanos in both capitols. It appears to be the only trusted place to get non-counterfit Cubans and if there are hardware stores near by ... bonus!:thumbsup2

Caryn

Sounds like a plan, John :) Bob wants to try quitting soon, this will be a bit of a 'last hurrah'.
