The Road to Hell - Grand Cayman Style
Oct 07 '01
The Bottom Line Unless you're into cheesy souvenirs, or a serious student of geology, don't bother going to Hell.
They say the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. It is not. It is a fairly flat, straight road paved with asphalt.
Hell, Grand Cayman, is a tiny community north of Seven Mile Beach. It consists of some rather desolate looking rock formations, a cheesy souvenir shop, and a small post office. This is one attraction in Grand Cayman that you can skip and not feel bad.
The rock formation here is the result of centuries of rainwater wearing away the softer limestone, leaving behind a jagged, other-worldly landscape. Called ironshore, I have seen this type of formation on other islands, notably on the north shore of Aruba. It is interesting, from a geologic point of view, but not particularly scenic.
Some people say Hell got its name when someone, looking at the rock formation, said, This looks like Hell. You be the judge of the historical accuracy of the statement.
The souvenir store boasts a gentleman wearing a devil costume. For a small fee you can take his picture. When he found out I was from Michigan, he asked me if I knew that there was a Hell in Michigan also. Yes, I replied, and it regularly freezes over.
From the tiny post office you can mail postcards to all the people who have ever told you to go to Hell, or that youd end up in Hell if you didnt change your ways. You can tell them you made it to Hell, and rather enjoyed the trip.
If Hell is on your itinerary, (after which you can say youve been to Hell and back), dont plan on spending more than half an hour. Hell is, after all, a rather dull place.
Getting to Hell is easy. (Oh, how true that is!) You can take any of the ubiquitous mini buses that circle the island, or you can walk. I suppose, if you are small enough, you could go to Hell in a handbasket.
It is rather a hike from most of the hotels on Seven Mile Beach, but once into the community of West Bay, you are in a very pretty residential area. And besides, if you are on the road to Hell, it is best to have your eyes wide open.
Whether you end up in Hell by design or by accident, the trip there is more enjoyable than the arrival.
