I'm in the love to hate this ride group! I've ridden it about 3 or 4 times...thinking each time "what am I missing here" & my answer is a lot of time in the park !!!

Rule of thumb is if you like pirates, then you will like this. Basically a boat ride where the boat goes thru the malestorm.....actually flashes of light in a dark tunnel...plenty or trolls, and then the boat goes backwards...when the troll says "back". Littlier kids could possibably be scared.

If and when you go on the ride at Norway, see if you can find the "hidden Mickeys" in the main lobby of the line. There is a mural on the wall and there are 4 hidden Mickey's in it. Good luck !

calm ride, a few "suprises" so to speak, with about a 15 foot drop (correct me if I am wrong on the size???)

Well, it has pretty much been explained well here. I just wanted to say that I never miss the ride on my trips. I like it, but its alittle too short.

This is a ride I think Disney messed up on. I thought it was very boring. My 7 yr. old didn't think much of it either (we shoulda gotten the FP to Test Track, Dad!). I can honestly say I'll never get on it again. There's so much more to do at Epcot than this.

I LOVE this attraction, and yes, I even LOVE the film!!! I can recite pretty much the whole thing.......

Having said that, I have a little friend who still talks about this 'bad' ride, 16 months after she rode it at age four. The trolls did her in, following by the scary polar bear. In fact, that was the end of Epcot that day for her and her other four year old friend.

Every child is different. When I was five, I closed my eyes on EVERY SINGLE ride at DL, with the exception of Peter Pan.

personally I really like this ride.
however, if your kids are really young they may be scared by the troll/tree person.
If they are old enough to be allowed to watch the lord of the rings and weren't scared of Treebeard then you should be fine.

I LOVE Maelstrom. My six year old thinks the trolls are scary though. He covers his eyes at that part but is fine on the rest. I think the whole ride is steeped in an otherworldly-type atmosphere and very enjoyable.

My kids were always bored by this ride. I happen to like it and I also like the movie.

I can't do any rides with "slopes", I get sick and have anxiety. However, this ride doesn't bother me at all. I won't go on Splash Mountain and I close my eyes until I'm sure we're passed the slopes on Pirates.

It really depends on how easily your kids gets frightened. Maybe you could walk through the store and look at the trolls before doing the ride, then decide.

I don't remember being trapped in the movie theater after the ride. We always were able to walk out an open door. has this changed recently?

You can walk directly through the theater without staying for the movie. Just walk quickly across the front and out the doors.

My youngest DD is no daredevil when it comes to rides, but she will ride maelstorm. It's not her favorite, but we always give her the choice to ride along or one of of will sit out the ride with her and she always chooses to go along. So, I figure it can't be that bad! She does put her head in my lap for parts of the ride, but she tolerates it well.

Funny thing, at the end of the ride where people are gathered to wait to enter the theatre, DD asked me 'Mommy, are those people real'?

I love this ride!!! But--on my nephew's first trip to disney he did not like it at all. He was 4, went on splash, big thunder, but after his Norway ride he was not happy. After many return trips to disney he finally went on it again last year (he is now 14). We had to drag him on to this ride. His comment? "That was it? Why was I so scared?" So I think it depends on the child. I am already preparing for this October when I am going to attempt to get my niece on this ride. She is 10, will be 11. So if you see an almost 40yr old woman, (who looks 30 ) offering money to a screaming 11 yr old, that will be me.

I can't resist sharing my favorite memory on this ride. In November my sister Kate and I stayed at Epcot for EMH after the rest of the family went back to the Boardwalk. We walked around the World Showcase and commented on how empty it was, almost like we were alone! We went into Mexico to go on the boat ride and were tickled to find out we were the only people in the building aside from the CM's. We laughed ourselves silly on the ride. We then walked over to Norway were again we were the only people in the building! I've never thought this was a scary ride until that night! It takes on a whole different feeling at midnight, when you're all alone with the troll. For the rest of the trip my sister and I had a running joke "You are not the first, but you will be the last" (with a norwegien accent)

my family enjoyed this ride, however, we will probably not go on it again. when we got off the boats we had a LOOOONNNNGGGG wait to enter the movie. there was no way to exit without going through the movie theater and we were not allowed to enter the theater until the previous show was completed and the theater cleared out. our plan was to get a bite to eat after the ride, by the time our wait for the theater was over, the kids were uncomfortably hungry and very bored of standing there waiting, waiting, waiting.

My 9, 7 and 4 year old kids LOVED this ride! They went on it 4 times in a row. The drop is not scary at all.

I agree, but that isn't saying alot, either ! I love this ride and look forward to it on each trip.
