Mac vs. PC Laptops

Robin Williams (not the actor) writes a great book to learn OS X. I have an older one, but I'm sure he has a newer one. Lots of great tips and tricks, so you can get the most out of your mac. Search amazon and read the reviews.

Now I need to decide if I want the matte screen, or the glossy screen. Any ideas, or advice?

I have the glossy and I love the way the way photos POP out on it (I do a lot with photos). The cons of the glossy screen: you can't see the screen too well if you are outside and it can be scratched VERY easily. I live in fear of that happening. It does look great though, and I'm glad I have it. Have fun with your new MAC, I love mine!!

I prefer the matte screen as the glossy screen picks up glare too easily from office lights and outside light, IMHO. I don't like seeing the reflection of the office lights on the screen, have to adjust the screen angle to deal with the glare. Look at both in the store and see which one you prefer - really is a personal choice. Your photos will look terrific in the glossy!

For $99, I can get one-on-one classes with an instructor at the Apple Store. I'm going to take advantage of that, at least at first. I'm pretty computer savvy and think I'll pick up the new system pretty easily, but I want to know all the little things too.

That's Procare, and it's a really great deal. Not only do you get the one-on-one training once a week for a year, but you get priority treatment if you need service (you get bumped to the front of the line) and you can book appointmemts up to 14 days in advance. And it includes an annual tune-up of your machine.

The glossy screen has slightly better contrast and color, but it shows reflections more. The anti-glare (matte) screen is a better choice if you're going to use it in places where you can't control the lighting.

You're gonna love your new Mac!

Question that's sort of related, why is it everyone seems to be equating PC to Dell only? There are so many more options out there for PCs.

Part of it might be due to my original title. I know I changed it about three times!

Plus, I have a Dell, and it was what I was originally looking at, and comparing to the Mac.

It sounds like I need the matte screen then, because I use it outside a lot. I'm sitting on my back patio typing this message, as a matter of fact.

My husband has the glossy screen on his XPS and seems to like it, but he tends to work more in our office.

Matte it is!

I'll decide on the screen size when I get there tomorrow.

I would definitely go with the matte screen if you spend any time outside. My last laptop before I made the switch was an HP with a glossy screen, and while it looked great for movies and pictures in a home or office, it was awful on a job site or on an airplane. It was also a pill to keep clean (I felt like I was constantly needing to wipe a smudge off of the screen).

My first official MacBook Pro post!

I love this thing so far!

I was just able to chat (and I mean actually speak!) with my daughter through the computer! That was the coolest thing ever!

And it's so quiet! So far, so good!

Thanks again for all the great advice!

Congrats on the purchase, and welcome to our world! It's a better place. :) :thumbsup2

I've had one major issue with one of the internet sites I depend on, so it looks like I'm going to have to load windows.

I downloaded Firefox and Netscape and neither one will support this site.

I also can't tether my BlackBerry to it without windows. From what I hear, RIM is working on a fix for that, so I just have to wait and until then, use windows.

Other than that, I love how easy it is to use. It did freak me out when I first booted it up and started entering my information, only to see my face staring back at me! I'd forgotten about the camera!

One thing I do miss about my PC, is IE7. I loved the multiple tab feature that it offered. Unless I'm missing something, it looks like I'll have to open a new browser window every time I want to open a new site, without closing the old one. Sort of like IE6.

I'll check out the Mac tips site! Thanks!

If you go to Firefox, go up to "Tools", then add-ons, then look for a extension called "colorful tabs" to download. Same tabs idea as IE, but beter- they are color-coded!

Also, I don't even think you need to download anything to have tabs (they come with firefox)- just go to "file", and click "new tab". Or set your preferences- go to "firefox", click preferences, then click "open new pages in tabs". Then any link you click on, will go to a new tab.
You can even place a tab button right up in your toolbar Go to "view", "toolbar", then "customize" Drag the tab button up to your toolbar, then when you want a new tab, just click it.

Macs rule. I'm upgrading from a PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro - I wouldn't leave Apple for the world!

But Safari doesn't offer anything like that, do they?

I think I managed to delete both Firefox and Netscape from the hard drive already. At least I think I did. I "ejected" them, and I don't see them showing up anymore, under the Mac folder.

I have no idea what I'm talking about right now...
