and not by driving
Would it be train? flying?
we're from central MA - where would we get the train if we went that way?
Where would you fly in to? then would we need to rent a car to get to Hilton Head?

Don't know about a train. Sounds horrible to me.

To fly, you would fly to Savannah, GA. You would have to rent a car. There is an airport on HH Island, but I think flights are quite limited.

Or drive right down I-95 (I know, it's a ways from MA).

As noted, Savannah is the closest airport- about a 45 minute drive away.

You could also fly into Charlotte and then another flight into HH. Rental cars are available either at Savannah or at HH. A car is definitely needed.

From MA also... Was checking out how long the drive was, as we're thinking of going to Hilton Head. A mere 17 or so hours! Of course we've made the trek by car to WDW a couple of times so HH doesn't seem so bad:p

As far as the train goes, i'd check Amtrak. They probably have an online site.

I'll bet you could fly from Boston to Savannah, then rent a car and drive the 45 minutes or so to Hilton Head. If you haven't been to Logan in a few years, you're really in for a change. Just flew in there for the first time in years. Wow, has it gotten to be a MUCH easier airport to get in and out of. Savannah is always easy to manuver and even we didn't get lost on the way to Disney's HH.
Of course, if you're in central Mass., there's always Worcester (my old home). Do they even fly commercial airplanes there anymore?
Honestly, best bet is probably Boston to Savannah, then drive.

Yes, they do still fly some commercial flights out of Worcester but they fly pretty limited routes in my opinion. I live in Shrewsbury:D Anyways, we have found that flying out of Manchester or Hartford is considerably cheaper and easier than flying out of Logan. Parking at Central Parking at Logan is just astronomically expensive now. Hartford has much cheaper on-site parking and generally has cheaper flights for the routes we fly at least:D

We've been to HH twice and flew into Savannah both times. The drive from the airport isn't bad, like Doc said, about 45 minutes. A rental car is a definate must on HH. Hope this helps.

We live south of Boston and we go to Hilton Head almost every year, as we own a non DVC Hilton Head, as well as OKW.

The best way to do the trip is USAir to Charlotte, then change in Charlotte for Hilton Head. There are some 8 or 10 flights a day into and off of the island. You can also look at United as they are now code-sharing with USAir on the same flights.

From the Hilton Head airport, you are less than 10 minutes to DVC Hilton Head... Enjoy the trip and see everyone there in October.

We are going to HH in June and could not get "free" flights in there. Instead, we are flying into Charleston and are making the 2.5 hour drive al,ong the coast.

Tickets into Charleston or Savannah run about $450 each from the West Coast. So, I look for tickets within a 6 hour drive.

In July we flew into Atlanta (direct flight) and drove into HHI. The drive was supposed to be 5 hours, but we ran into Construction. We paid $278.00 per ticket.

Just bought tickets a couple days ago for our March trip. They cost $267.50 and we are looking at a 6 hour drive from Raleigh, NC.

We purchase 3 tickets and figure the savings are worth the drive. Besides we still have good friends in Alanta and Outside of Raleigh. We like to try to visit for a few hours or overnight, if possible.

We love HHI, but flying in closer is considerably more expensive. Enjoy planning and check all airfares. Play with the dates as well. Our March trip we figured would be Sat to Sat. The cheapest ticket was Sun through Sat. Sunday flights are usually more expensive.
