Lunar New Year and CA Food and Wine returns !!

Some booths were already up yesterday. From what I saw, the menu seems to be exactly the same as it was in 2020. I didn't see any new items. There were, I think, 3 booths up yesterday. There was also a merchandise stand up and already open, selling merch. I found that to be in bad taste. Just screams "we want your money RIGHT NOW." The festival is still several days away.

I saw that yesterday too. Can’t quite get all those Christmas decorations down, but sure can get that merch booth up!

There's actually even more on the site! Wow, I had ruled this out but I think I just ruled it back in!

Am I the only one who is less excited about this year's menu than the menu in previous years? It looks like they axed some of the desserts, made a few things spicy and took out some meat. Given that I'd want meat with each of my meals and don't always want to eat spicy food, it doesn't quite fit my palate.

The mango pineapple pie does seem a bit intriguing but I expect it to be a bit too overpriced for me so I may not try it.

It seems very Korean food heavy, which seems odd, but likely has wider appeal. It is strange that most of the actual Chinese items seem to be drinks.

In addition to favoring Korean dishes, for a lot of the Chinese dishes, they picked spicy items and/or intentionally made them meatless:
  • Spicy Pork Dandan Noodles
  • Spicy Three-Cup Chicken
  • Impossible™ Lion’s Head Meatballs
  • Spicy Kung Pao Tofu
  • Kung Pao Bao
I don't see a single spicy or fake meat item on the Hong Kong and Shanghai menus.

Interestingly, it appears that these Dandan noodles are being offered as a dish at Docking Bay 7, albeit with some modifications to the pasta type and the addition of cabbage and Brussels sprouts. I saw a review of this dish last week and it was not "spicy", although the menu describes it as such. The dish is called Dewback Chili Noodles. The reviewer really enjoyed it.

The Food and Wine festival has the best foods, overall. I was super disappointed with the holiday festival this year.

I'm getting really tired of all the Impossible meat substitute taking over dishes that previously had real meat. The new versions are disgusting.
I realize everyone does not like the impossible meat, I however REALLY appreciate it as I can have an enjoyable time eating at the same places my family, who is not vegetarian, does.

I think the way to do it properly would be to have the regular meat version and a version with Impossible meat for people who prefer that. That's like adding an item to the menu which is clearly an improvement. When they take out meat and put in an Impossible dish, it's often taking out something I would consider eating for something I have no interest in eating. I have no complaints about adding Impossible items to the menu but I don't like when it displaces meat based or true vegetable items on the menu.

YES! Exactly.

I have a feeling Disney is trying to find a way to insert Impossible meat into as many things as possible at the festivals because it's not that popular at the regular quick serve restaurants and they have a contract, so likely are sitting on quite a LOT of Impossible products.

I agree with you. We're a family of vegetarians here. We have really enjoyed all the vegetarian options Disneyland has had for us in recent years. We loved the Impossible chorizo queso dip for Festival of Holidays and the Impossible arepa Encantada, it was just 2 choices out of the whole festival. There was plenty for everyone.

Can't wait to try the Impossible meatball dish for Lunar New Year, also the Kung Pao tofu. There's just one impossible option for Lunar New Year.

I agree, Disney has really upped their meatless game up. I was happy to be able to enjoy the Impossible chorizo dip this last trip and it was so much less greasy/fatty unlike the actual chorizo that I had in 2017 back when I still ate meat. I would love more non-Impossible meatless options, but I do get that with Disney's brand deal with them they are utilizing it more, and I have enjoyed everything I have tried with Impossible in it. I really wish I could try that Kung Pao Tofu! The Asian Tofu Salad at the Pacific Wharf Cafe is also amazing if you haven't tried it yet.

Yeah, it's all a matter of perspective. Looking at the menus for Lunar New Year, there are 3 meatless options that I see out of 20 options (2 options for vegans). I counted all of the savory options (didn't count drinks or desserts). Festival of Holidays was about the same. I think there were 4 meatless seasonal savory options spread out throughout the parks. I think 15-20% is fair.

And for many of us omnivores, Impossible and tofu aren't limiting. I'm sorry they are for some people, perhaps we're just not that picky, but I really like Impossible proteins and (OK...fried) tofu. Unless there's an allergy, it's just really a preference. I wouldn't expect Disney to make both a pork dish and a non-pork dish of the same type just because I don't like pork. 🤷‍♀️
