How does DCL handle the luggage when you disembark? Do we need to pick up luggage from a central location? Or does Disney handle luggage transportation to the airport? We have booked Disney transfers. Thanks!!!!
(Have heard horror stories about luggage "warehouses" when criusing with other lines.)

Hi,

While I have never used the DCL transfers I can assure you that after sailing DCL many times and sailing a few other cruise ships as well, you have nothing to fear with Disney's luggage central pick up area for your luggage. DCL is so organized that even though it's a large room where you pick up your bags (similar to the other lines's warehouses) you'll have no trouble finding yours. I know we never have in the numerous times we sailed. :) DCL has seperate colored sections based on the deck you were staying on etc. It's really nicely laid out. :) It's amazing that even though Disney pretty much lets you depart the ship when YOU want to (not when they call your color etc., like other lines), that it's so easy to find your belongings. I also always try and add a fun visable trinket or ribbon to add to my luggage as well, which I am sure helps too. :)
Hopefully somebody else will post to you about the transfers.

My understanding is that every piece of luggage must go through customs with its owner. That means that no matter how you are leaving the port, you will be taking your own luggage through the walkway where you give the customs guys the little paper saying how much you spent in the Bahamas.

We have cruised DCL 4 times and RCCL once. When our luggage color was called on RCCL we waited and waited at carousels like at the airport but found no luggage. Then someone pointed out that the color was on a TV overhead and we were in the wrong cubbyhole.

On DCL the luggage is arranged by colored tags in a large room. We stay on the ship as long as possible so when we go to the warehouse our luggage is almost sitting alone. But I can imagine that if you went earlier you could find it easily. They seem to do a very good job of keeping all the luggage from one room together. Or, if not together, at least in clumps, not one here and one there.

DCL has the best luggage system of any line we've cruised. THe luggage will be waiting for you in a huge room, all lined up by stateroom number. You will be issued color coded tags the night before. You go to your color area (big signs), and it will be arranged in numerical order. You claim your stuff and a porter is right there waiting to help (if needed). You and porter go thru customs. He then wheels you to the airport check in area for your airline. If you are on a "participating" airline, you can check in your luggage right at the port. It will go in a truck, you will go in a bus. If you are on a "non-participating airline (like Southwest), your luggage will go on the bus with you to MCO, and you will check it in there.

Either way, the process is very smooth. It is easier to check luggage at the port though--avoids lines at MCO.
