Backlot Express
For lunch on Day 5, I was in MGM with Carebear05. CB05 loves ABC Commissionary, but they werent open. After hopelessly wandering around looking for food, we ended up at Backlot.
The crowd levels at MGM were not high, but Backlot was packed. We waited 10 minutes in line to order the food. Now, I have a slight pet peeve and it comes up here. While you are waiting in line, look at the menu! I mean dont wait until you are at the register to look at the menu. I watched a family of four do this in our line. I was amazed
you spent ten minutes waiting and you couldnt read the menu then? Okay enough of that
So, anyway, I ordered a cheeseburger, fries, coke, and chocolate mousse. I am actually surprised that I decided on the cheeseburger. Backlot has some amazing looking sandwiches including a grilled turkey and cheese that sounded amazing. Instead, I choose a cheeseburger. The food was good, solid comfort food very tasty. CB05 got the same thing, but added cheese sauce into the mix. The mousse was really yummy and a great way to end the meal. I was stuffed.
Food: A cant really mess up a cheeseburger and fries!
Counter Service: A- -crowded, but they handled the crowd well
Grand Total: $14.66 (Cheeseburger, fries, large coke and chocolate mousse)
Marrakesh
Marrakesh was another restaurant that my family vetoed last year. As I have had very little exposure to Moroccan food, I was excited for my dinner here.
I arrived early for my PS and was seated immediately. The restaurant was almost empty, so I was able to snap a shot of another table
My server took a while to greet me. I had been seated long enough for me to consider calling a manager when she arrived. Unfortunately, she was a bit soft spoken and I wasnt able to catch her name. To start with, I wanted the Moroccan rose wine, but they were out of it. I decided on the Moroccan chardonnay instead. The wine was flavorful, but not too strong. With my wine, my server brought out some multigrain bread
The bread was warm and incredibly delicious. I had to stop myself from eating the whole loaf a very difficult thing to do.
For my meal, I decided on the Marrakesh feast. This starts off with the
Harira Soup and a
Beef Brewat Roll
The Harira soup is a
traditional hearty flavored soup with tomatoes, lentils and lamb. This soup was rich and flavorful. I really like the spiciness of the soup it wasnt spicy as in hot, but spicy in a flavorful way. From the description, I was expecting a clear soup. The soup was almost creamy in texture. I loved taking the bread and dipping it in the soup. Yummy.
The Beef Brewat roll is hard to describe. The menu describes them as
layers of thin pastry stuffed with seasoned minced beef, fried and sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar. The closest thing I can compare it to is an eggroll, but that doesnt do it justice. The minced beef is seasoned perfectly. The savory beef flavor mixes with the sweet sugar and cinnamon an unusual, delicious combination. The pastry is not heavy like an eggroll, but light. Mouth-watering.
While enjoying my soup and roll, I finished my wine and my water. My server was nowhere to be found and I couldnt get anyone elses attention. After at least five minutes, my server returned to the dining room. I was able to flag her down for another glass of wine and a refill of water.
The main course was
Lemon Chicken, Beef Shish Kebab, and Couscous with Seven Vegetables
The Lemon Chicken
braised chicken seasoned with garlic, green olives and preserved lemon was flavorless. With preserved lemon and green olives, I expected the chicken to be bursting with flavor. It wasnt.
The Couscous with Seven Vegetables
rolled semolina steamed and served with seasonal vegetables was also bland.
The Beef Shish Kebab
grilled tenderloin of beef marinated in Moroccan herbs and spices was the best of the bunch. The beef had a lot more flavor. However, the beef was a bit overcooked for me. In the future, I think that I would try this dish again provided I asked for my meat to be cooked medium rare.
The dessert course was
Assorted Moroccan Pastries
The pastries were excellent. Nice, light crust with unique fillings. I really enjoyed the dessert.
The atmosphere in Marrakesh is lovely. The décor is very pleasing to the eye I loved the wall tiles. During my soup course, the Marrakesh band started to play.
After a song, the belly dancer came out
The belly dancer danced for a song and then went into the audience to find a bald man. She encouraged him to come out and dance with her. He did! After that dance, she danced another song on her own and then coerced some kids to come dance with her. She was beautiful and graceful. When I grow up, I want to look like her. It was fun to watch all of the teenage boys whip out their cell phones and start taking pictures of her!
The band was really good too. I was boogying in my seat. One of the male servers asked me if I was going to get up and dance. Um, no. Not after seeing the beautiful and talented dancer go. No sense in embarrassing myself! This bunny just likes to pretend she can dance
Overall, I enjoyed my meal here. The appetizers, dessert and atmosphere made this meal enjoyable. The main course needs some work.
My rankings:
Food: B because of the main course
Service: B
Atmosphere: A+
Grand Total for me with tip: $65.00
Jellyrolls
After Illuminations, I headed over to Jellyrolls with CareBear05. Jellyrolls is amazing. I loved the music. It was so much fun to listen and sing along. The piano players were amazing just about any song you could imagine, they could play. Way cool!
Bar service was shoddy Cara tried to order drinks at the bar and it took forever. Our cocktail server was a lot better. He was visible when we needed him!
I am not sure the grand total for the night Jellyrolls does NOT take the room card. As I was not carry my credit card on me, this caught me by surprise. They only take credit and cash! Thankfully, I had some cash on me. My best guess - a bottle of Miller Lite was $4.25 - $4.50. I am not sure though.
My rankings:
Atmosphere: A+++
Service: A- (bartender brings it down)
Price: B (it is Disney, so $4.50 for a beer isnt total robbery)
