LR3 won't recognize 6D RAW files

Possibly.......
Though I will say that creative cloud (Lightroom + Photoshop CC) for $9.99 per month is a pretty good deal. I mostly use Lightroom but in photoshop is useful for the content-aware eraser and cloning stamps alone. And the knowledge that you get every update and upgrade.

I'll never have time to learn photoshop. And if I have to get something, I'd prefer a one-time expense.

If I have to buy LR 4 or 5, does it upgrade the 3, or does it load on as a completely separate program?

It looks like Photoshop Elements uses the same Camera Raw as PS and LR, that's another option.

Can I assume LR5 is preferable to LR4? (I hardly ever shoot video, so none of those functions matter to me). If I'm comfortable working in LR3, will the new program be very similar? I'm really not in the mood for a learning curve.

You actually don't have to buy new software! When you import raw files, have LR convert them to DNG, which is the Adobe equivalent of a raw file. It works just fine!

How can LR convert them? The entire problem is that there's no support for the RAW files coming out of the 6D.

Alrighty then. Didn't know that. Sounds like double the pleasure, double the fun to me. Nice to know it's there but I wouldn't want to alter my workflow like that, not when a hundred buck upgrade solves the problem and gets me a product 2 generations newer.

Guess it's just me. Like I said, nice to know it can be done though. Good info.

Yes, download the Adobe DNG Converter software then import the DNG files into LR3

Yes, I did this at work when I was stuck with CS2 and had a newer camera that was not supported by it's version of ACR. It is another step but it works and shows the silliness of every manufacturer having their own RAW file types.

right, Adobe wants you to keep upgrading and pay monthly dues to the "cloud"

My camera has the option to save photos in DNG format rather than the manufacturers own RAW file.

Is it a separate file to download? I have LR4 and when I am on the import screen, I change my selection at the top from "copy" to "copy to DNG" and then click import. Easy peasy.

It saved me when I bought my Sony rx100 and it was too new for LR4. I wasn't upgrading for a point & shoot camera's raw files but that was partly why I bought that camera. Haven't had a single issue with it at all!

Anyone care to give me more details on how to do this? Does it mean I will have the original RAW file on my computer, then a duplicate converted to DNG, so will need twice as much storage space?
