Louisiana flooding

Sending prayers to all of our fellow DIS'ers and their families and friends who may be affected. Please stay safe

Bump for the evening crowd.

Thousands of people displaced, without power or cell service. For those of you who might have contact with fellow Louisiana DISers through other social media sites, please check in on them. Many will welcome the extension of a life line.

It looks like it's still raining in the area. . . :(

Sun is shining today, which only makes it more surreal. It's heart wrenching to see familiar streets transformed into navigable waterways. Neighborhood after neighborhood just devastated.

Activation of the "Cajun flotilla" and helicopter flyovers are all too reminiscent of Katrina high water rescues.

Now it's just a wait, watch & pray. Waterways to the north / north east have crested, but many areas of my parish are now quickly being inundated by the high waters as they move downstream. Sadly the water won't subside until days after.

Louisiana native living in Florida here, and my thoughts and prayers are with y'all.

My immediate family is safe, but I have so many friends and relatives in Baton Rouge and Ascension Parish whose homes have flooded or are close to flooding. It's all so surreal; this is the third time since 2005 (Katrina, Isaac and now The Great Flood) that loved ones have lost everything. It's absolutely heartbreaking.

Stay strong, Baton Rouge. New Orleanians haven't forgotten all you did for them during Katrina, and they will help as swiftly and as effectively as they can.

This is our business. It has about six feet of water inside but we still feel lucky. Our home is high and dry and the homes so many of our friends and customers are flooded that we can't help but feel like one of the fortunate ones.

The left side of the building is rented to a dog groomer. She's lost everything, including her home and her recently widowed mother's house.

Update: A friend just sent us this:

Hopefully it'll be headed down after this.

OH NO! I was wondering where you were in PVL when you said you had 4ft of water yesterday. Now I understand. I've seen high water there before, but that's just unreal.

Feeling helpless here too. Trying to get word out to displaced friends that we have room here, but spotty cell service is making things difficult.

We've offered but so far everyone has family to go to. We may end up taking in a few horses though. DH finally was able to talk with our insurance agent. She's been out of touch-no cell service and her home is underwater.

She told DH that it's heartbreaking to listen to all of the folks who flooded but had no flood insurance. So many that were dry in '83 don't have insurance and now they're under water. Our business buildings are pretty bare bones and we got around 95% of the inventory out. I can't even imagine seeing our house like that!

Wow!!

So sorry you're dealing with that. :(

Definitely better the business than the house, but still. . .

(((hugs)))

Our business in Prairieville has at least 4 feet of water inside but our house is still dry, thank goodness!

Stay safe out there Louisiana peeps!

My Mom and Sister are in Praireville and are dry at the moment too. When I talked to my Mom, about 2 hrs ago, they had been without electricity since 9:45 last night. My brother in law works at the BASF( in Geismer) plant and they had to shut it down. No one could make it in. Praying things clear up fast. My poor niece is getting married in a little over a month.

Just checked the OHSEP site...You're probably already aware, but they're looking for donations / volunteers at Lamar Dixon. I have a feeling you're uniquely qualified to help in ways I can't!

Thanks guys!

Watching the noon news and we're definitely the lucky ones. They're rescuing people from flooded houses by the hundreds. I'm sitting at home high and dry and cool and playing around on the Internet.

There are many, many power outages and no potable water in Denham Springs just one parish over

DH talked to them. We shipped all of our feed inventory out on an 18 wheeler on Friday and it won't be coming back for a few days now. Everything still in the store is probably ruined. DH stocked up all of our larger clients but several of them are under water now. It's a mess.

I'm so sorry about your business, and the homes of your friends and clients. It is just so sad. I'm glad you were able to clear some inventory. We had a big storm surge warning once, and we moved everything we could to our upstairs neighbors. It was a lot of work, but worth it.

I'm from jersey but I have a friend who has several friends down there and she has a donation box that she is putting at our barn. She said her friend has already lost several horses and they are still rescuing stranded horses. She put up a post this morning that they were able to rescue 5 more horses...its just unbelievable how fast it happened

Wonderful! Any & all help is greatly appreciated.

You're so right! We have hurricane readiness & response down pat. Although they were forecasting the ridiculous amounts of rain last Tues & Wed, it was very uncertain. This goes so far beyond any flash flooding we've ever seen, and I hope to never witness again. Literally one for the ages.

Thinking of ya'll. (I am originally from New Orleans, but have lived in Florida for many years. My family still lives in NOLA.)

You can take the girl out of New Orleans, but you can't take New Orleans out of the girl!
