You know about a month or so ago I read some posts on another board that thought he was reading A Wrinkle in Time but couldn't tell for sure. There were a lot of theories on that book and the parallels at that time.
I've never read the book, but from what little I know about it there seems to be a lot that parallels Lost. I think the same can be said for some of Stephen Kings work and some old B movies, none of which I have ever read or seen. Just commenting on thoughts by people who have.
It's funny that you say that because I posted something earlier today on another Lost board:
"Interesting Parallels between Lost & Stephen King"
The Stand
Good vs evil theme
The possible foreshadowing of two separate camps forming with opposite agendas
The Dark Tower series
The references to Richard Adams, Watership Down and could Shardik have something to do with the polar bear?
A character's obsession with entering a mysterious and potentially dangerous place--nothing good comes from this obsession.
"The Prisoner"--A young man addicted to heroin (his brother got him hooked) who kicks the habit with the help of an older, mentor type man
"The Lady of Shadows"--A woman who seems like a normal woman but her "inner (other?) self" is more sinister
A special child with "the touch"
The Tommyknockers
Again with the obsession. A group of people work to unearth a strange large, vessel and long to know what's inside.
Survivor Type
A man ends up on an island due to a crash. He is stranded with many bags of heroin. He also happens to be a surgeon.
The 'bad father' theme is key in numerous King books, such as The Shining, Gerald's Game, Dolores Claiborne, IT, & Rage.
