losing weight by walking

Absolutely!! I lost 45 lbs by walking. I went to a track in the evenings or in the mornings and walked 2-3 miles depending on how much time I had. You have to walk FAST and keep the pace using the longest stride you can. I also added arm exercises while I was walking. First I started out just using my arms, then added a 1lb weight then a 2lb weight. After a year of doing this, I had toned arms, legs and surprisingly the most toned core I've ever had. I found this out accidentally. I added arm exercises because I wanted toned upper arms. I didn't realize that by exercising arms while I was walking I was also toning my core. It was a nice added bonus. Download some really upbeat tunes and hit the pavement. goodluck!!

My mom lost 100 lbs in a year--watching what she was eating and walking 2-4 miles a day. Granted, this was someone that did no exercise and ate anything she wanted before. She's 57 and did her first triathlon this summer!

I hit send on my phone too early and didn't get to finish my post. With the last 10 lbs, you will definitely have to change what your eating.

If I walk fast I do about 15 minute miles. To find out how many calories you burn, if you have a smart phone you can download map my run, it has setting for many types of exercise. My fitness pal is another way to track what you eat and exercise.

I found that I was burning many less calories walking than I thought. The only way to lose weight is to eat less, exercise more.

Both these apps are great (well, I use map my ride, a sister app to map my run) and use MFP daily (on day 270 in a row). I have lost a bit of weight in the last 9 months or so and I am in the best shape of my life and I am 43. The only way for a normal person to lose is to run in a calorie deficit. The rule of thumb is to eat no less then 1200 a day. I personally can't do this (I am a big person so I can eat more and still lose), I need to eat a lot more. I use a polar heart rate monitor to get a estimate on the calories I burn during a workout. Good luck.

Tell your mom way to go!!
