It will show if whole name is typed out. No self-filling dropdown on fewer letters keyed in.
I think if a poster is on a temporary or permanent disboards 'vacation', that feature is disabled. Also, i think that if a poster has not posted in some board defined time period, it is also disabled. But a full typing out of the name will enable a search.

Agreeing with you. Also, the fact that PM (conversation) link is gone from profile, I would lean that way also. I have PM'd him in the past but that is not functional now.
I have had multi-day board 'vacations' here before, as long as 30 days. My avatar was not removed, even temporarily. Longer anticipated 'vacations' do remove the avatar, I think.
They should probably be careful not to make it too obvious depending on why they are gone in the first place.
