Loose vs. Lose!

Duh, didn't these people pay attention in 2nd grade English class?

NOPE!!

My biggest pet peeve is when my sister and I are on AIM chatting and she says "I don't know what I am going to WARE today". :sad2:

I have mentioned it to her and she never gets it.

Its not as if she's dumb.... but COME ON!

Misuse and misspelling drives me nuts!

Oh my! I just saw this thread title scrolling through the main board and had to comment since this is a pet peeve of mine as well. Between loose/lose and your/you're I start to go a little nutty. Could of/should of (rather than could have/should have) gets to me as well. The other big misspelling that makes me cringe is "discusting." All of these pale in comparison to my reaction to hearing the phrase "on tomorrow" as in "we leave for vacation on tomorrow." :crazy2: I've learned to overlook the me/I misuse but my now 2nd grader corrects people on it all the time. "Grammy, it's they gave Poppy and ME ice cream not Poppy and I. If you like I better you should say Poppy and I got ice cream." :rotfl:

Oh, no - I just found another one! On another board, there's a thread listing the criteria to (apparently) determine if you love a particular decade. The first item in the list is "You've ever ended a sentence with the word SIKE."

:goodvibes I love this thread!! It dissolves most of the tension accumulated while reading the horrendous English in so many posts. I'm always tempted to correct the poster but stop myself to avoid being unkind. I know how I feel when my DH, the King of Grammar, corrects my English! ;)

I need a life, I really do. Someone elsewhere on the DIS is complaining about not being aloud to do something...

Safari Queen - I know how you feel. I once sent a PM to someone who'd used a word in a post, followed by (sp?). Silly me, thinking the person would really like to know how to spell the word... I got a nasty response.

I'm an English teacher. I have a bulletin board in my classroom titled "Grammar Spy". On this board, the kids can bring in any printed grammatical errors they find and they will get credit for posting the clipping. They actually try to have fun with it and are eager to be more careful readers.

I, too, have a hard time dealing with such errors. I am told that I am quite annoying because I often correct people when they speak and when they write. I teach 8th grade and correcting grammar, spelling and usage seem to be one of the largest parts of my job. Some of the students listen to me and pay attention. Some continue to make the same mistakes over and over. I have little patience for mistakes made by adults who should know better. I know it's not very nice, but sometimes, I just can't help myself.

There have been times when I have had to restrain myself from correcting someone...but I think...doesn't everyone want to know the proper form and usage? Doesn't everyone want to know how to say or write things correctly?

I think a lot of people make mistakes when it comes to the subject of foods. Especially desserts. Usually they use the word "deserts" as in the dry, hot area of land. It really gets on to me, because then they just look like a fool.
[COLOR="Dark Magenta"]Hey guys, want to grab some DESERT? I hear they got some real nice chocolate cake. A lot of people have it for DESERT."[COLOR]
LOL. I don't know if it's just me, but I tend to hear that A LOT. Especially when I go out to eat. Ugh..

Genuine question here - in US English what does 'gotten mean'? Is it just used instead of the word 'got'?

It's used in English (UK English) in such phrases as 'ill-gotten gains" but other than that does not really figure in our language

The English majors may correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that Gotten = the past participle of "GET".
Example: I haven't gotten to my chores yet because I've been spending too much time on the Dis. ;)

Found another one on the strategies board.....

"I simpsize with you." They were telling someone that they sympathize with them about not being able to see Giselle.

Wow........

Judge Judy not, that ye be not judged.

Personally, if "It's I before E except after C" doesn't have it covered, I gotta hope spell-check'll save me.

... nothing prunes can't resolve.

In a discussion on the CB (I know it is a dangerous place, but I can't resist) there is a guy who says $500 to spay a kitten is "exuberant". Really? I think it is exorbitant! ;)

I can vouch for that!

Dearest light of my life, quit it. Or cook for y'self. Just saying.
