US prices are jacked up as high as $600 plus for an economy car for a week. Supposedly due to Daytona 500. But here's a trick: Go to the european "car hire" sites such as netflights.com you can rent a car same parameters for only 99 BP which equates to about $167 in exchange. 
Not bad. And I knew there was a way around it but really I don't get it. One thought is that the brits add more extras than do we americans, still not $400 worth of 'em that's for sure. Glad I got it figured out before I arrive in sunny F tomorrow!
