When buying in a 55+community, you need to really check out all the extra's and the cost that correlate's with those extra's, and the HOA fee's. Also look at the HOA rules, there are so many, everything from parking, to how many guest you can have, and family visiting and for how long. Some friends just went this route and after really digging into all the rules and HOA rules, they decided it wasn't for them. They ended up buying in Ocoee in a brand new smaller development that had what they wanted included in the HOA fee's and the ability to have family and friends come and visit and stay as long as they wanted to, or grandkids staying for the summer. They almost went with Mount Dora, but the brand new home won out.
You might just want to get in your car and drive around checking out all the small little towns and communities that there are and which one feels like home.
