Looking for touring suggestion in England

Hi,
We're planning to spend Christmas 2006 with friends in England. We plan to spend time in London, visit Liverpool, & Stratford on Avon. I'm looking for suggestions of things to do & see with our DS(14). He's a music lover & is very excited about visiting England, because of their history with rock & roll. Any R&R related things you would recommend? Thanks

If your son is a music fan and you are going to Liverpool you must go to the Beetles museum. It is really good.
If you are in London how about catching a west end show. The Queen musical, We will rock you is excellent. It is full of Queen songs. I am sure he will like that.

Thanks for the suggestions. The musical & rock circus both sound like things he would enjoy. They're going on the list. The Beatles connection is our reason for visiting Liverpool. From what I understand there's not much else there to see.

Actually Liverpool is a very interesting place, it's quirky.
The Albert Docks are nice and there's the Tate Gallery.
Also from there Port Sunlight is close by which is also very interesting and has a great art gallery.

The Big Bus Company do guided sightseeing tours in London. They are great fun and you can hop on and off the bus at different stops along the routes. The ticket is valid for 24hrs and is £17 per Adult and £8 per child.

I've used this service myself as I think it's a cheap option to get around the city and learn about the history.
I know this isn't Rock n Roll related but there is also a few really good Museums in London: The British Museum, The London Planetarium, The London Dungeon (very gruesome), Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and Madame Tussauds (with a new Prince William waxwork that you can get up close and personal with)
I think your Son would enjoy Madame Tussauds as there are quite a few music related waxworks.

I'm glad to hear there's more to do in Liverpool. I was afraid we'd be traveling 5 hrs. each way from our friend's home just to see the few Beatles related things. It sounds like an interesting place to spend a couple nights. If any of you are from there or go often, I would love more info. Thanks jjpenguin.

Is there something about the HRC in London that makes it better than the rest?

We have the British Library on our list of "must sees". I'm sure we'll go to Madame Tussaud's, but I don't know anything about the other museums listed. I'll check them out. Thanks for the heads up on the Big Bus tours.

I'm hoping you won't be disappointed at the HRC as everything (IMHO ) always seems bigger and better in the US

Maybe it's just the holiday factor and you'll feel it in reverse on your travels

The Beatles connection is our reason for visiting Liverpool. From what I understand there's not much else there to see.


Besides the obvious Beatle connection there is plenty to see and do in Liverpool. There are lots of museums including the Liverpool museum, Tate, museum of Liverpool life and Merseyside Maritime museum. There is also the Walker art gallery, Bluecoat art chambers and across the water (as someone has mentioned) the Lady Lever art gallery in Port Sunlight, Wirral.

Not one but two Cathedrals (Anglican and Catholic), the waterfront with the Liver buildings, Albert Dock and the Pier Head where you can catch a ferry across the Mersey.

Two premiership football clubs, Everton FC and the mighty reds - Liverpool FC, you can visit both stadiums and at Liverpool there is also a great museum about the history of the club, it is the home of five European cups as well as plenty of other trophies (yes I am a Liverpool supporter ).

Brilliant night life with some bars playing Beatle stuff, especially in Mathew street & Cavern quarter. You can still visit the Cavern Club, but be warned it gets very hot and stuffy!

Lots of great architecture to see as you wander round town, including St George's Hall and the largest chinese arch outside of China in Berry Street. Theatres - The Empire, Everyman, Royal Court and my favourite The Playhouse. Plenty of places to eat and drink, good Hotels and last but not least, the friendly people.

If I remember right, there's a sculpture of the Yellow Submarine somewhere near the Albert Docks, could just be my memory playing tricks on me though!

You must visit the Superlambanana if you go to liverpool. It's easily one of the world's oddest statues, half lamb, half banana. It's right by the Albert Docks too.

Wow, looks like we'll definitely need to stay longer in Liverpool than we 1st thought. Question: Our son (14) wants to visit the Cavern Club. Will he be able to get in? If so, when's a good time to go? Thanks again

Hard Rock Cafe London was the very first Hard Rock Cafe ever. I have been to loads and I am not sure if this one is better than any other. I collect the glasses, teddies,t shirts and pins so I have to go to them all whenevery staying anywhere nearby. London is very expensive compared to US. London has the London Eye.

The theme parks are not as good as US but Alton Towers, Chessington and Thorpe Park are good. I have just come back from Blackpool which we enjoyed which is fairly near Liverpool.

My nephew collects HRC shot glasses . I'll have to get him one. We plan to spend a couple nights at DLP. I didn't think any of the theme parks in England would be open between Christmas & the 1st week of Jan. Am I wrong? I looked at the website for Blackpool & I think it will be closed. I'll look up the others. I'll definitely do a trip report & let you all know how much we enjoyed everyone's recommendations. Since we're not going until Christmas 2006, it will be a long wait though.
