Hello everyone,

I have a few thousand in credit card debt, consolidated into a 401k loan, that I need to pay off. I'm considering taking up a second job on the evenings/weekends to help make ends meet. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for good places to work? It needs to be somewhere with shifts starting at 6 or later, or weekends only. Preferably not something that is going to stress me out more than my day job. And I'm a dad, so I want to pull a few days a week so I can still see my family.

I realize this is kind of specific, and probably like looking for a 'Unicorn' job, but I figured this would be a good place to start!

I used to work part time in retail along with a 9-5 job; did so for a couple of years or so. It was a local department store. My retail shifts were evenings and weekends. If I recall, I was able to specify the amount of hours I preferred to work, then they may or may not assign that specifically, as some weeks were more some weeks less. I think 1 weekend day was required, but that might be any time during the day - so if I worked Saturday morning opening shift, the rest of my weekend was free.

Good luck!

whats you day job and what kind of transferable skills do you have?
Then look at your transport options.

For example, I went to night school to get a degree while I was working. I choose a college which was near my day job but not near where I live. I finished work at 4.30pm and class started at 6.15pm. I would usually be on campus by 5.15pm, this hour gave me time to eat and clear my head and prepare for class.

My DD worked at Target through college. She told them she wanted 15-20 hours. Each semester she just gave them her availability as it changed with class schedules. It worked out pretty well, they never scheduled her when they shouldn't have, though they gave her more than she wanted sometimes. They are working up to $15/hour soon.

^^ I agree and many stores hire part-time help during the Christmas season.

Any of those online taxi services will require you use your own vehicle (added expenses) and have the proper insurance for using the vehicle in a business. Also not sure if you would be comfortable picking up strangers. Works for some, but wouldn't be my first choice of a part-time job.

A server, but in a hotel restaurant. I worked for a very popular hotel chain in the restaurant. I worked Saturday and Sunday mornings and occasionally a Tuesday night. During wedding season especially, I made a killing. In cash alone, I could walk out with $300. That’s not including credit card tips. My paychecks were generally close to $1000. That’s JUST working 3 days a week and again, not including cash. My ex, who bartends there, makes anywhere between 3000-5000 a month.
This obviously may not be typical. I lived in a highly populated, affluent suburb with an amazing location to Pittsburgh.
I’d kill for that job back. I moved to Florida, so I had to quit

I worked at Target thorough college, too. I thought it was a good company and I enjoyed it. After a few years gaining seniority, once I was “in” I could request the shifts I wanted. They definitely have 6pm-close shifts for the front-end which includes cashiers and guest service. I don’t think you would be able to escape working the weekends but I’m sure you could request off on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday if you wanted. I think another benefit of working at Target is the employee discount and going shopping on your break. As a parent you were probably already spending time in Target or a similar store.

Do you like animals? Do you have a fenced in yard? When we travel, we use someone we found through Rover.com. The family takes in one dog at a time (they also have a dog). They keep our dog at their home. The more you sit, the higher your rating. We chose someone who had over 60 positive reviews. They sent us pics of our dog each day. You set your fee. It would be a relatively easy way to make additional income if you have a yard that would be dog-friendly and completely fenced in, and already walk your own dog each day.

We have a large amazon facility here. A friend of mine who recently retired from teaching got a job picking for prime pantry. She said the way it works is you go online and pick the shifts you want to work. You just have to work once a month to stay active. Sounds like that would be ideal for you. Make your own schedule. She makes $15 an hour.

I think the restaurant servers, bartenders, Amazon Pantry suggestions are good. Also consider getting a different first job that allows you to request and work overtime.

Maybe not so much of a benefit ;)

Junior high? I used to go to a club where three of my former junior high teachers tended bar on weekends.
No he taught high school. He tended bar at a restaurant/banquet venue.

I've been working part time in retail for 5 years. I have a full time 8-5 job too. I told them up front I couldn't start until 5:30. They worked with me. Over the years I've proved myself and now I've told them I only want to work weekends and not every weekend. Basically I tell them when I want to work and she puts me on the schedule.

Going from one job to the other during the week is tough especially if it's multiple nights in a row.

Around Christmas time and after, there is a huge need for workers at department stores. If you can lift packages, you should get hired. My friend did Kohl's for years just to get extra money for Christmas. Good luck.

Have you looked into possibly re working your budget so you don’t have to take in another job? What I mean by that is maybe implementing some of the following ideas.

Checking with your insurance company to lower payments by taking a higher deductible on car or homeowners insurance.

2. Scaling back or cancelling cable bill. Maybe try YouTube tv, etc.

3. Planning groceries better by making meal plans ahead of time. Cook once and eat twice. Like maybe make two pans of baked pasta and freeze one. Doesn’t really cost double and then you can get two meals for the price of one.

4. Stop or cut back on eating out. Don’t buy coffee out etc.
5. Bring lunches to work....eat leftovers from the night before.
6. Look into switching service contractors to save on monthly bills for things like trash pickup,etc..
7. Look into refinancing home if rates have dropped from your original mortgage.
8. Cut back on spending money. If you spend $100 a week, cut it back to $75 and send the $25 saved to debt.
9. Sell stuff you don’t need on Craigslist or EBay.

Sometimes a second job can definitely help. But other times, you may be able to “save” what you would make at second job by re-doing your budget.

Good luck!
