My kids have been carrying their own bags since they were 5yo or so. When the now 12yo was 5yo the Disney Store's website had an entire line of affordable bags that could be monogrammed. I was able to get him a small messenger bag that lasted him about 6 years of trips and every day use to car around his Nintendo DS. It is disappointing that all they carry now are high end bags and backpacks. :-(
While my teenage daughter is fine w/ a string bag in the parks, they are definitely not padded enough for the 12yo to bring his phone and/or iPod. That's why we are looking at the sling back I posted above.
FWIW, I've never seen the need to bring multiple bottles of water. We each have a reusable water bottle and just refill them for free wherever they have soda machines.
