I love books as gifts. :thumbsup2

Not mystery or light fantasy, but the Traveling Pants series is interesting for girls at this age.

When in doubt, you can always pick up a few classics. Salespeople at Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc. can point you in the right direction as to what's usually assigned for this age group.

here are a few that might be good:

Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin (think The Lovely Bones but not nearly as adult in subject matter)

anything by Tamora Pierce; her books cover subject areas from witches to werewolves. I know you said "light" fantasy, but they might be worth taking a look at

I would even reccommend The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold for the older girl, it's a great story with just enough supernatural thrown in.

The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson (the link below is to the first in the series)

These books are actually spin-offs from two of Patterson's adult novels, When the Wind Blows and The Lake House, both of which would likely be okay for the girls to read.

I guess I'll stop there for now...I get a little carried away when reccommending books

you guys have made my day !! ,
I am so happy .. with use all your suggestions above..
(i have never heard of any of these , except for the travelling pants series and i think they have them !)

i knew you guys here would come thru .. very much appreciated..

Both of my kids, 12 and 15, female and male, have read all of the Maximum Ride series and they loved them!

I 2nd the Libby Bray books. My dd15 really enjoyed them. My dd14 really likes the Maximum Ride books. I hope that I get a good book for Christmas!

I am reading the Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer. I think that is the author.
Picked them up on recommendation of DS15, his LA teacher two years ago read the first in the series to their class and he really enjoyed it.

They are very good, very entertaining but do have some adult content such as the occasional bad word or sexual innuendo.

hi all .. thanks for all the suggestions .. keep them coming !!
i started to read up on all the reviews out there and was wondering .. people here that recommend the books by Libba bray series...
are they a bit tiny risque .. though the girls are in their teens .. the 13yr especially is very young at heart ...just don't want anything toooooo adult..
(you know what i mean).. her mom might kill me after.

The Inkheart trilogy is supposed to be fantastic Inkheart Link. I picked them up on the recommendation of my children's lit professor but haven't had a chance to read them yet. Gotta finish the Twilight series first. :rolleyes1

I would recommed The Alchemist (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel) by Michael Scott...

and the sequel, The Magician

The books mix facts, history and the supernatural in a fascinating way. My DS14 who NEVER reads loved these and I have to admit that I wound up picking them up to see what entranced him and I also got very caught up in the story. We cannot wait for the next book!

Sarah Dessen's books would be great! I've read all of them. My favorite is Someone Like You, the basis for the Mandy Moore film How to Deal.

the suggestions here are great !!... now i think I am also going to pick
up some xmas presents as well....
