Long Hair on Women in their 30's, 40's

I am 35 and have long hair past my shoulders
I have been thinking of cutting it recently
but that's really nothing new for me
every so many years I cut it fairly drastically
I am blessed with hair that grows really fast
it is really nothing for me to get 3-4 inches cut off at a time
I may go short (to me anyways) up around the chin for awhile
haven't decided yet
getting ready to put auburn dye on again

Elaine, what did you do to your hair? The last time I saw it, it was was beautiful. Healthy and thick and the color is great!
LOL, Laurie! It is still there, it is still "long" (but short for me) and the color is still the same (haven't colored in a long time). It's just about 8-10 inches shorter. I don't like it this way but I wanted to try it for the heck of it... won't do that one again ;) It still is "long" by every stylists terms... just not all the way down my back :teeth:

41 here and waist length. I've had really long, really short and everything in between. My BF prefers it long and so do I. I can braid it, wear it up, wear it in a ponytail, curl it, do all kinds of things with it rather than the one or two hairstyles I could get out of a short haircut.

I had breakfast this morning with a woman in her early 40s with long layered hair, honey colored with highlights. She looked beautiful (she's always looked beautiful...she looks like a Barbie doll).

For some reason, I don't like the look of long (hanging down) grey or white hair...don't know what it is... Of course, if that grey or white hair is pulled back in a sleek bun, it can look terrific.

And no offense to anyone, but if you have long hair and still have those poofy bangs, please do something else with them. (There is a teller at our bank with gorgeous long blonde hair and huge 1988 bangs...she'd be so beautiful if she'd stop dating herself with those bangs!)

My kids started watching "Full House" reruns when they found out that Mary Kate and Ashley were on the show. That show is a time capsule from the late 80s/early 90s. It took seeing that show and how out of date the hair and clothes looked to realize that I was hanging onto the 80s in a few respects. I've now done a closet and drawer clean out...if they're wearing it on Full House, it's history. So turn the show on tonight and if your hair (or your husband's) resembles anyone's on Full House, make an appointment at a salon!

I think whatever length looks good on a person is how their hair shoudl be. When mine gets long, it gets "big"...kind of bushy, so I aleways have to have it pulled back anyhow.

I keep it short now...easier for me to take care of. Just wash, comb, and go. No blow dryer, no "product".

My MIL had long hair all through her fifties and it looked absolutely gorgeous. It was very thick, salt-and-pepper colored with natural waves. She has it cut shorter now and it still looks good, but I think it looked better long.

I have long hair and always will - I hate the way I look with short hair! Admittedly, it probably needs to be short because it is extremely thin, limp, and stringy...really awful, but I just do not like the way I look in short hair. However, I don't let it just hang there, I do curl it to give it some body, but it takes quite a bit of work and in the end still looks pretty awful most of the time. No question about it - my hair is my absolute worst feature :(

I'm 50 with shoulder-length hair and plan on keeping it this length for quite awhile.:D

I have a cousin who is 50 & who has always, always had hair down to her waist.

Last time I saw her she'd had it cut to her shoulders.

She is someone who can wear her hair long & suit it. Some ladies however don't suit long hair when they are mature age.

I've always had long hair & love long hair, but the older I get the shorter the hair has become. It just does not suit me long anymore.:(

I'm 32 and just recently had mine cut shorter and I hate it. I can't wait for it to grow back out.

I turn 40 (I'm still 39!) this year.... my hair is down to the waistband of my jeans. I do really like long hair, but if I could find a shorter style that I thought would suit my chubby round face I wouldn't mind a change. But definitely nothing that requires extensive attention. I'm definitely a wash and go girl! I'm just so afraid that any shorter style will make my face look rounder. PLus I'm working on losing another 40 pounds (40 down 40 to go!). Maybe I will get a new "do" when I hit my goal weight!! But definitely nothing EVER shorter than shoulder length!.........P

I also don't think age has a thing to do with it! As long as it looks good on the person and it's well kept, it shouldn't matter how old or how young you are!

DH prefers me in longer hair, and so do I.

Im 34 and my hair is to my mid back. i dont think you need to cut solely based on your age.

It's funny that you are posting this... I think that some women look great with short hair and others don't (I'm one of those). I'm 39 and I got a haircut about 2 weeks ago. I have nice hair, people have told me so. Now, my hairdresser really gets upset (no kidding) when I tell her to just trim my hair. She thinks that I look better with short hair, believe me I don't. The thing is that she insists that it should be short, she was quite forceful last time. I guess it doesn't matter what I want. So... I'm not going back to her again.

I've been her client for about 7 years. This whole "short hair thing" started about 1 year ago when she became a Paul Mitchell stylist (something like that). One mistake that I made back in October was to tell her that I wanted something different... well, it was different. She said the cut would frame my face and it would be just above the shoulders length. The description sounded great, but it was different than what I got. The cut was good, but it was way too short and trust me when I say that I didn't look good. When my hair finally started to grow back, DH said, "Good, your hair is finally growing back".

I don't think I'll let my hair grow real long again, but I'll probably keep it a little below the shoulders or at least shoulder length.::yes::

My hair is down to my butt. I've always had long hair, this being the longest ever.

I do wear it up most of the time though since it is a hazard when it's down.
This was me to a "T", but not when I was old...all through my 20's. I'd wear it down if we were going out, but I worked in child care and couldn't have my babies pulling on it all the time, so I ened up with it on top of my head most of the time. I had long, healthy hair and everyone was always wowed by it, but I did nothing with it since it wouldn't hold any treatment (curl or otherwise) that long since it was so thick and heavy.

I cut bangs for the first time in 15 years right before I had my DD, and I also cut the length to just past my shoulders. It took years off of me! In the face I look very young, but with a bun all the time, I just looked frumpy.

It had grown back out again, about midback, and I was just putting it up again and I was tired of "looking like a SAHM". I went to a good salon in town, told the stylist "I'm tired of looking like a SAHM. I want to look cute and kicky and sassy! Not SAHM-y! Do whatever you want to it, but it has to be easy to manage! And it must look good with my very ROUND face." She cut it so it's right at my shoulders when I have the ends curled out or under and there are some long layers to give it movement and I have a small amount of bangs, just enough to cover my big forehead. I've never looked better and never felt better, and I get compliments on it all the time.

My DH always loved my long hair, but he didn't love it up and that was how I wore it 95% of the time the last few years, so he was all for it when I said I was thinking of cutting it. I was "afraid" of short hair and bangs and basically anything I had to fix for so long that I just did nothing to it and looked frumpy. NO LONGER!! I trust my stylist and will absolutely CRY when we move from here next year!

Do what YOU want. Look how YOU want. Be comfortable with yourself. That's what's important.

Some things I'd prefer not to see on a "mature" woman:

1960's long hair parted down the middle. If you had this the first time around, you might want to update your look. It can still be long.

Farrah Fawcett hairdo.

Old lady crimped and teased short hair - this may be the 'bubble" from the 60s - very matronly.

Actually I'd rather not see these out of date hairdos on anybody of any age, but to each her own. If you have any of the above styles and love it - well that's your business.

I love my hair long, and I don't think I'll be cutting it when I get to "that age." I also have thin, fine hair, but with layers it looks nice. Short, though, it flips every which way and would require WAY more styling than I have time for.

43 with long, thick & weaved (blong highlights) hair. I have often wondered in the past few years if I should cut it to my shoulders due to my age, but have not. I had it fairly short once years ago and did not like it. I love my hair, it is one of my best features. I say go with what you feel comfy with. Great thread.:D

I've got my hair short and my husband used to get mad. He thinks that women with long her are sexier with short hair except the only person who can wear it short and still looking sexy is Halle Berry. So..since then...I kept my hair long...but not too long where it's hard to keep up with it and no longer manageable. But since he is gone, I'm still keeping it long.

I've never really cared what anyone expects. I'm growing the hair out.

I'll be 40 this year.
